Japan’s Heisei Emperor Departs, Taking …

Japan is said to be on the brink of a new era with the pending abdication of Emperor Akihito effective on April 30, 2019. Of course, new era is usually a tired cliché but in this instance it is quite literally true. On May 1, 2019, the day after the emperor retires the current Heisei era will pass into history and the new Emperor Naruhito, now 57, will assume the throne under a new, as yet to be determined reign name.
