An estimated 3.4 million children are living with HIV – 10 percent of the global HIV-infected population although at the same time, the number of children newly infected with HIV has dropped drastically, by 52 percent between 2001 and 2012. Yet, according to the UNAIDS Global Report 2013, only 34 percent of children under 15 in need of antiretroviral therapy in the world are actually receiving it. This is just half of the ART coverage for adults. The goal of an AIDS-free generation will require a major focus on elimination of HIV in children.
