Slowly but surely he has been trying to tear the fabric of India's justice system, make it, as in Singapore, Vietnam, pretty soon Indonesia too under Probowo, and elsewhere -- such as the US Supreme Court -- pliant to his power, which he has been centralizing in his hands. Charisma may be good, up to a point, in politics, but most times, as history has shown, it's just so awful, produces the worst kinds of power-hungry and corrupt autocrats. Meanwhile Modi presides over an ancient clientelist system of power, presides over an ancient abuse of power, presides over what is probably one of the most inefficient and hugely corrupt bureaucracies in the world, and presides over and nurtures the worst forms of Hindu racist nationalism -- all based on false narratives. So why wouldn't he remove judicial independence that begins with India's Bar Association and its legal fraternity? India's judges and magistrates are already his pockets. The media, as hopelessly pathetic as it has become over the last decade or so, isn't doing its job of "keeping the bastards honest", as a former and late Australian politician, Don Chipp, used to say. So: not surprising!

Of course they then present policies in such a way (a populist nationalist fashion) that a huge portion of sheeple lap it up, despite it being contrary to the majority's best interests...
