[1] I am always amused whenever ASEAN is mentioned, as if it is a grouping that wields so much power and influence in regional politics (indeed regional political economy) that the rest of the world will find itself shaking in its boots.

[2] ASEAN, o all intents and purposes, might have started its life (in a different form) at the height of the Vietnam War, when "domino theory" was being bandied about like hot cakes. But when the US and its allies fled Vietnam in 1975, ASEAN was formally instituted but in the 50 years since, rendered itself "uselessly" and, frankly, a big joke.

[3] ASEAN is important only to itself -- when needed. Otherwise, its brotherliness, its unity within the grouping, is the opposite of laudable; it is laughable. Its diplomatic muscle is bamboo thin. It's influence is -- how to put this? -- parsimonious. It's reach in solving problems is -- again, how to put this? -- the butt end of a joke.

[4] To assume the group is so tight-knit that it can solve Burma's civil war is to suggest, naively, that it has the collective political will to do just that. because it it has, the Burma problem would have been solved many years ago, beginning with the Buddhist Burmese and corrupt junta's persecution and genocide of the Rohingya people from the legitimate lands in Rakhine state. But ASEAN turned its back of the Rohingya. In fact, they themselves refused to allow the Rohingya entry as refugees and settle in the ASEAN countries.

[5] As for the United Nations, that's another laughing stock of global institutions. Maybe Trump is right: maybe the UN should be dismantled and dumped in history's dustbin. Like ASEAN it's another "uselessly" organization. Always has been, always will be.

[6] So what about the Burma problem? About the only things that is clear about ASEAN's resolve on Burma is that there has been, and continues to be, these countries' consensus to be rank hypocrites by cooperating with the murderous and corrupt junta for purely economic or rather business investments.

[7] That tops the cake.
