Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters and baton-wielding police turn Kuala Lumpur’s streets into chaos

kl-protest Central Kuala Lumpur turned chaotic Saturday as baton-wielding riot police used water cannon and tear gas to try and thwart an attempt by tens of thousands of marchers to deliver a petition to Malaysia’s king, asking for royal intervention in delivering electoral reform.

“There is a massive jam all over town, as the police have set up road barricades everywhere,” a witness told Asia Sentinel in the morning. “A lot of entry points into the city are being monitored by the police. A heavy, heavy rain just subsided and one wonders whether this will dampen the turnout for the march.”

It didn’t. As many as 40,000 people struggled to make their way into the city center in defiance of the police ban on the rally before heading for the Istana Negara, the king’s palace.  Police said they had arrested at least a dozen protesters demanding change and an end to corruption.  There were no reports that people had been hurt.

The confrontation between the country’s nine sultans and the government appears to be deepening as well, with Mizan Zainal Abidin, the Sultan of Terengganu, who currently holds the rotating kingship and is Malaysia’s constitutional head of state, ordering his royal guards to stand aside so that the marchers could deliver the petition despite the fact that police had refused to grant a permit for the rally.  The delegation, led by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, handed the memorandum to the King's secretary at the gate of the Istana Negara at 4 pm, accompanied by PAS' Hadi Awang and Nasharuddin Mat Isa and DAP's Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng. The organisers then asked the crowd to disperse

Malaysia's mainstream press, owned by the ethnic political parties, carried nothing on their websites about the protest, the biggest in Malaysia in a decade. Popular websites were jammed, apparently by government-allied cyber-jammers.

The protests were led by an organization called Bersih, or the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, an umbrella group encompassing 64 civil-society groups and five opposition political parties. The action Saturday was in direct defiance to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who earlier vowed that the government would crack down on the demonstrators. “We will not hesitate to take action against those who defied our orders," state news agency Bernama quoted Kuala Lumpur police chief Zul Hasnan Najib as saying. The police had refused to grant a permit for the rally.

Abdullah Badawi Friday told a meeting of the leaders of the United Malays National Organization, the leading ethnic party in the Barisan Nasional, or ruling national coalition, that the government would not tolerate street demonstrations. “They are challenging the patience of the people who want the country to be peaceful and stable. That is what they are challenging, not me,” he told party leaders.

The protest is by far the biggest in KL since anti-government protests in 1998 that led to the arrest and jailing of former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, who now in effect leads the Parti Keadilan Rakyat despite regulations that bar him from political activity. The rally demonstrates vividly the growing dissatisfaction with Abdullah Badawi and raises questions of how strong his hold is on his own party or the government, since the protesters largely achieved their goals. And, with a sizable percentage of ethnic Malays as well as Chinese and Indians in the protest, it also demonstrates growing dissatisfaction with Malaysia’s race-based politics.

The protests have been sparked by continuing reports of rigged elections, judicial irregularities, widespread corruption in the dominant ethnically-based political parties, which have been in power since the country won independence from the British in 1957, and the perceived weakness of Badawi. In particular, the protesters point to a by-election in the town of Ijok in April, which the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition won in the face of what looked like a solid challenge by Parti Keadilan.

A Malaysian blogger, Raja Petra Kamaruddin, charged earlier that of the 12,000 voters in the district, some 1,700 were phantom voters, with people as old as 107 still on the rolls. Others listed as voters were as young as eight years old. The ruling coalition outspent the opposition massively and, others charged, also bused in voters.

On Saturday, the government posted 4,000 police from the Field Reserve Unit to block all roads leading into Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), the former cricket pitch in front of the colonial-era Selangor Club.  That brought Kuala Lumpur’s always chaotic traffic to a standstill and nearly paralyzed the city. Protesters abandoned vehicles and streamed toward the city center.  They were asked to wear yellow as the color of the day because, according to flyers handed out all over the city, it is “the color for citizen action worldwide and the color for the press-freedom movement.” It also happens to be the color for Malaysia’s royalty.

And, although the country’s most prominent weblogs and Internet publications were largely shut down, the power of the Internet and cellphones was again vividly demonstrated by Malaysia Today, an Internet publication that posted minute-by-minute reports from witnesses, delivering such messages as “Walkers are gathering in hundreds near Jalan Melayu (Malaya Road) Gate.”

As websites were blocked, Malaysia Today delivered messages directing readers to other websites that were delivering eyewitness reports on the demonstrators until it too was shut down.

“Another big group is walking toward the palace and two FRU (Field Reserve Unit) trucks are following them,” anon. wrote at 3:23pm. Said another, “We managed to reach the slope opposite the entrance to Istana Negara (the king’s palace) at around 1pm, the Istana was sealed off! Are they putting our King under house arrest or protecting His Majesty from what?”

At 3:26, the site reported that Malaysiakini, the leading online news site in the country, was running into communications problems.  From that point forward, Malaysiakini was only online sporadically.

The website warned people not to wear yellow as they walked toward the city center, but to don the colors once they were inside.

At 3:34, another correspondent wrote that he could see police firing water cannons at demonstrators. “It is shameful for the government to resort to that,” he wrote.

Seven members of Bersih including the opposition party leaders were allowed to go to the gate to hand in the memorandum calling for the king's intervention in bringing poll reforms.

monkey, who became very angry and threw mangoes back at little Jack .

unwilling riot police
written by wow gold , October 31, 2008
at one point, when the officer told his man to start the water cannon, it was heard that he said, "they are not violent or anything. Also, there are many women around".

Subsequently, the officer went to make a phone call. And in the next 1 minute, he went to his subordinate and gave him a slap. And commanded him to start the water cannon.

Is this the way to handle a peaceful protest? a protest meant to pursue a Clean electoral system?

Shame of Malaysia!

Police State?
written by Drew , November 16, 2007
Hantu Laut. Kudos for a very mature view. this has so far been the best criticism of the protest that I have seen. You do make sense, the protest does have its downsides. But the thing is, the price is worth paying.

Elections have not worked at all to change anything, democratically. Not as long as gerrymandering, and dirty elections happen. All other avenues (memorandums, appeals, etc), have not worked. Hence the need for the protest.

Does it achieve something? OF course it does, This episode definetely brought awareness to some (local and international), told others that they were not alone, and told the government, that the Rakyat would not be stepped on.

Elections cant change as long as their rigged, and as long as the people have blinders on (State controlled media, etc). This is the only way to reach out. We love peace too much to revolt, so lets take the slow and steady peaceful protest.

And lets hope that unlike the policing of the media, they wont police the peaceful protests.

Wait a minute.. they just did that. So, welcome to the police state, where information is witheld and you cant choose ur leaders or voice out against them(tianamen square, or orwell's 1984, anybody?). look that up in a dictionary, and I'm afraid you'll find the word communism, something our forefathers fought against ages past, for the very same spirit the protest was held. Peace, Unity, Freedom.

Dear Incredulous abd Hippo...
written by Peaceful Malaysian , November 12, 2007
My friend Incredulous, you get all my message wrong. FYI, I am NO.4 in the racial column for being a native of borneo. Why are you so outraged by my views anyway? About the minority/majority issue that u raised, maybe I am as bright as you but could you please tell me where exactly in this 'JUST' world of ours exists a single-race ONLY country or a totally 'intertwines' mixtures of races, cultures, faith and lifestyles that lives in harmony based on tolerance and mutual respects. Where? I hope it is not high above, in space or the moon, ya. As we do not have a space shuttle yet;P Come on, I am not deluded or being incredulous. I am not rich, privileged nor have a lavish house, I dont even have a house of my own but renting from my non-bumi landlord. I'm just being rational and sane before jeopardising the lives of others. Besides that dont forget our staple food is rice not bread..or are u 'orang putih/mat salleh'? Get yourself sober lah, kio! Later u die of hypertension or stroke..rugi our country.

Dear Hippo,
I truly love our country and I dont like what is happening at present in our country, too. Dissappointed. But then again, I am not ready to tarnish Malaysia's good name also. I believed that we have alternative(s) to every problems. Not to run amok with the intention to 'get' the international community's attention. The world is already in a mess with other undeniably serious problems like WMDs, Poverty, Famine, superpowers trying to dictate other sovereign state, etc. You see, basic things that we Malaysian needs to solve first is our 'small' differences. Once we could do that, we have no problem to handle the world. I know the intention was good and I am on your side, hoping for a better Malaysia. But not this style.

An Exercise In Futility
written by Hantu Laut , November 12, 2007
Irene,
On the front, it seems so.The actual masterminds of the street rally were the political parties using the NGOs as a front and to add credence to the cause. There are only two ways you can change a bad government, through the electoral process, or if that is not possible, through a revolution.Street demonstrations will not achieve anything positive.

The only thing the recent event had achieved was to show the world that there is political instability in Malaysia and probably scare away some long term foreign investors.

Are you living in a parallel universe, Peaceful Malaysian?
written by incredulous , November 12, 2007
It's amazing how deluded some Malaysians are intent on remaining. What good image/reputation are you talking about, Peaceful Malaysian? You mean the one which we present to the world by spending billions on sending one man into space, while others can't even afford a roof over their head? Or the one where we pretend to be a democracy, while racially discriminatory policies are being practiced and defended by a government against the MINORITY?

Or maybe I'm the one who is deluded, because I certainly can't see the "modestly-still-good" economy that you are writing about. Maybe the extra 20 sen I had to pay for my bread this month, on top of all the other price rises in 2007, was just a nightmare. Tell me, Peaceful Malaysian, aren't you paying the extra 20 sen, or are you getting some special subsidy which the rest of us are not? Can you afford a 16-bedroom house with 21 bathrooms? In MY universe?

Hantu Laut, please get your facts right. The march was NOT organised and led by opposition political parties. It was organised by Bersih, a coalition of 67 NGOs and 5 political parties.

Yeah, we have electoral process to effect changes, and if the electoral process is not fair and transparent, how can it be used to effect change?

An Excercise In Futility
written by Hantu Laut , November 12, 2007
I am not a great fan of the present government. My greater concern is corruption and abuse of power.I am against street demonstrations as it can gets out of hand. Many peaceful demonstrations in other countries had turned ugly and bloody and the same can happen here.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy and to incite the King to be involved in politics,I believe, is wrong. We have the electoral process to change the government and we should use this channel to bring about the desired changes.I am also against giving 'blank cheque' to allow street demonstrations as this can lead to civil disorder. Many may not agree with me, but I do strongly believe Malaysians are not ready for this type of political culture, where strict discipline are required on both sides and Malaysians, by far and large, are not exactly a very disciplined society, judging by the way they drive.

The recent street demo was organised and led by opposition political parties and, if my guess is right, headed by Anwar Ibrahim, who is more concerned about his political future rather than the security of the country. His party,PKR is losing its lustre and support in the Malay hinterland. The result of the last election in 2004 was a telling sign of its deterioting support. It inflicted a deadly blow on the party, won only 1 seat out of 5 it had before. To say there were massive rigging in the election, may not hold water, as DAP, a Chinese dominated party managed to improve its position by getting more parlimentary seats, 12 as compared to PAS 7 and PKR 1.

The protest should have been against massive corruption in government instead of asking for a clean and fair election, which I believe is Anwar's make believe story.

Wake up, Peaceful Malaysian
written by hippo , November 11, 2007
TO Peaceful Malaysian: Did you think that this massive march was the first thing that had been done? Many have to tried to solve it the quiet way, but unfortunately it wasn't heeded. This event was good because there was a rising discontent over corruption and unfairness and if we do like you said, we'd be apathic Malaysians. Before this, the government didnt think that it mattered, but now it's a wake up call for them. The rakyat has shown their unity against corruption. Why would the government be against a rally that calls for free and clean elections? Or are they hiding something? Please wake up, peaceful malaysian... these people are walking for YOUR rights. For a better Malaysia. If you truly love your country, you would too.

What do we get from NOV 10?
written by Peaceful Malaysian , November 11, 2007
I believed that most of those so called 'Malaysians' have not take into consideration what would be the implication of this rally to our country's image and reputation? What would the neighbouring countries and even worse, countries who have always wanted to see Malaysia go down the drains due to political instability and insecurity think of? Is this 'reformasi' the only way to solve all the above problems/concerns? Do we Malaysians have to tell and shout so that the WORLD could hear us when we want something to be improved in our own country? What are we Malaysians especially those involved trying to do actually? Are we hoping for some 'foreign' intervention after this or maybe call for international pressures on Malaysia should there be no positive outcome achieved from Nov 10 incident? I am sad and at the same time ashamed that we need to resort to this to get what we wanted...at the expense of our beloved Malaysia's good image/reputation. Maybe some of us who called ourselves Malaysians are simply ungrateful and easily lured to things similar, when citizens of other nations are flooding our country to reap the benefits of our modestly-still-good economy which are anchored by our political stability and internal security.

Peaceful, progressive and united Malaysia, forever!

Rage against the machine
written by Renegade , November 11, 2007
Kudos to fellow malaysians who give a s**t about what's happening to our beloved country now. The protest showed that the BN and the gov machines are not totally rage proof, when the rakyat get pissed off, they will rage against the machines. Hope that our King is not just a puppet with strings as claimed by some, hope that our Highness will act upon the rage of his subjects and rage against the corrupted machines with the backings of his loyal subjects. Shame on our mainstream media, not even one of them carried the story of the protest on their frontpages, not to say pictures of the protests. Shame on abdullah too, what he said in these few days are outright bulls**ts, the rakyat don't want to be disrupted by the protest? the protest disrupted peace? C'mon PM, the protest is meant to be peaceful, and it did turn out to be peaceful, the police are the ones who disrupted the peace that day. Here is a friendly message to our crooked and corrupted judges, police officers, and civil servants in putrajaya and to the overlords of UMNO and BN, "the rage of the rakyat will rock upon you, and all you little creeps will have no place to hide, we will bring you down!" Does this sound anti-gov? Btw I don't giv a s**t, I just want my freedom of expression and speech, not "limited freedom"! If freedom should be limited, its not freedom at all!

unwilling riot police
written by mat , November 10, 2007
at one point, when the officer told his man to start the water cannon, it was heard that he said, "they are not violent or anything.

Shame of Malaysia!

malaysia at its worst in 30 years.x

The turnout would have been bigger if the police did not take further drastic action.

At many roads towards the city, the

1) police had turned away many vehicles with the passager wearing yellow.
2) Those wearing yellow, or whose bags contained yellow T-shirts, the police took down of ID and Vehicle numbers of the people and warned them not to go into the city that day. Warned them that they would be arrested if the crowd got out of control.
3) Groups approaching the Dataran Merdeka were stopped and questioned. Many said they were threathened that they are illegally assembled they will be arrested.

Malaysia had never seen such a big protest ever since Anwar-Mahathir sage. However, such protest would be unavoidable when a No1 man clash with No2 man.

In this case, it is a genuine public protest against the mismanagement of the Badawi Administration and his corrupt practices. We can say that the underlying problems is the worst that Malaysian history had seen in the last 30years.

God bless Malaysia... or watch it sink under Abdullah Badawi and his corrupt son-in-law!!!

BN is Kotor, QED
written by Antares , November 10, 2007
It appears that 50 years in power have made the Barisan Nazional fat in the head and in all the wrong places. The sheer stupidity of trying to stop people from marching for unassailable causes such as clean elections and a respectable judiciary! I couldn't believe it when I read news reports that Abdullah Badawi had openly said NO! to the march organised by BERSIH - that alone is a condemnation of him and his political party for KOTOR (dirty) politics and other monkey business. Why would anybody with a clear conscience oppose the concept of clean elections and an honest judiciary, which are the twin pillars of any democratic system?

Sad to say, Badawi has made nothing but BAD decisions since October 2006 when the explosive news of Altantuya Shaariibuu's gruesome abduction and murder first broke. In trying to protect his deputy from investigation, Badawi has compromised the entire government and put Malaysia in utter disrepute. Millions of tourist advertising revenue wasted! Who wants to visit a country where you can be abducted, raped, shot in the head, and blown to pieces - and nobody seems at all keen to find out what happened, who ordered immigration records deleted, and what the Mongolian lady knew about the Malaysian way of shopping for dangerous toys?

Attempting to suppress this particular march through brute force may be the last bad decision he makes as Malaysian PM. As an observer of and participant in today's invigorating march for electoral and judicial reform, I can attest that many of the police personnel seemed just as edgy and tense as the marchers. I wonder what thoughts (if any) they were thinking. If I were a police officer I'd hate being used as a political tool to suppress the vox populi. For the police it's a no-win situation. Time they Polis Di Raja Malaysia got smart and stopped propping up the big-time crooks in Umno.

Malaysia is a beautiful country with a talented population. It's only the BN government that's ugly and totally untalented. And the people who support BN for their own business interests are incurring seriously negative karma - just as in Burma!
