For Koreans, the Philippines is the new Florida

korphil1They came without warning, trickling in almost unnoticed until there were too many to ignore. It seemed, all of a sudden, that South Koreans were practically everywhere in the Philippines – in malls, universities, the country’s top resorts, and even on local television shows.

By now, Koreans are in almost all of the Philippines major urban areas. From up north in the cool city of Baguio to Davao City down south in Mindanao, Korean restaurants and groceries, bearing Korean-language signs, can be seen. They have established everything, from churches, hotels and resorts to gigantic manufacturing facilities. There are even Korean-only suburbs in Cavite.

Koreans have invaded the Philippines, and Filipinos for the most part are welcoming them with open arms.

It isn’t hard to see why. Less than four hours away by plane from Seoul, the Philippines has an English-speaking population known for hospitality, a significantly lower cost of living, and some of the most postcard-perfect beaches in the world. At the same time, Koreans are bringing in buckets of dollars into the Philippines both through consumer spending and direct investments.

The numbers prove it. In 2006, Koreans took the number one spot both in tourist arrivals and foreign investment in the Philippines.  More than 570,000 Koreans visited the country last year, overtaking arrivals from the US, which includes returning overseas Filipino residents and workers. On the resort island of Boracay alone, arguably the most famous tourist spot in the country, 65 percent of the visitors who enjoyed the powdery white sand last year were Koreans.

South Korea, accounting for $1.2 billion of the $3.5 billion in investments that entered the Philippines in 2006, is now also the nation’s biggest source of foreign direct investment, followed by the US and Japan. A large bulk of this figure is courtesy of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., which is building a $1 billion shipyard – the fourth-largest in the world – inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales Province north of Manila.

“The Philippines’s location and manpower makes it one of the best destinations for Korean businesses,” says Jae J. Jang, president of the Korean Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines. Around 250 large factories in special economic zones in the Philippines are Korean-owned. Koreans are also among the top investors in the tourism industry.

There are now over 100,000 Koreans living here also, each of whom are estimated to spend an average of $800-$1000 per month, which adds up to almost $1 billion in consumer spending each year. Koreans in the Philippines significantly outnumber those in neighboring Indonesia, estimated at 23,000, and Singapore, with only about 8,000.

But instead of embracing all that is Filipino, Koreans, it seems, prefer to bring Korea with them. Wherever they settle, Korean establishments soon rise. Mini-Korean communities are now scattered all over the country. Aside from the usual restaurants and groceries, there are Korean internet cafes, salons, spas, and churches. All have prominent Korean-language signs and few offer any English explanation. It is not unusual to find Korea grocers here who even import Korean-made Coke and Lay’s potato chips from back home, even though identical products are available locally.

“They keep to themselves,” says Pamela Samaniego, the head of Team Korea for the Philippine Tourism Department, echoing a familiar sentiment.

It is not surprising, therefore, to hear of rifts. Local newspaper reports says that tour operators in Cebu complain that only Korean travel agencies are benefiting from Korean tourists because local operators are shut out by Korean companies. In Baguio, where the cool climate is an attraction, there are complaints about illegal business transactions and practices. Some resorts in Boracay are said to have banned Korean tourists because they leave the rooms in shambles after their stay. In Talisay, home to Taal, the world’s smallest volcano, a huge controversy now surrounds a Korean company’s plans to construct a spa resort on the island volcano despite local environmental restrictions. The issue threatens to become an us-versus-them storm. .

In Davao City the city council launched an investigation in late June into Korean business practices, claiming that Korean businessmen were setting up illegal businesses and dodging visa regulations. Also in June the Bureau of Immigration pointedly warned against foreigners operating retail stores and using Filipinos to front for them. Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said foreigners, most of them Korean, had been violating immigration laws. "A foreigner who engages in the retail trade is liable for deportation as the act is a violation of the conditions of his admission and stay in the country," Libanan said.

The complaints, however noisy, are so far minor and it seems unlikely that the perpetually cash-strapped Philippines is going to turn away Korean money any time soon, indeed it is just the opposite, with the government aggressively promoting tourism and education to Koreans.

This Korean wave, says English language instructor Edmer Bernardo, began in the late 1990s, when Koreans began coming to the Philippines for English tutors from local schools and universities. The C21 Language Tutorial Center, for which he serves as director, was established by a Korean businessman in 1999 in recognition of this trend.

Today, hundreds of these English language centers – many of them catering exclusively to Koreans, as evidenced by their Korean language websites – can be found throughout the Philippines. In Cebu, the second largest city in the country, about 60 of these centers serve Korean students.

Banking on the country’s reputation as the only English-speaking nation in the region, the training schools – known as hagwons back in Korea, where students cram to learn English – are providing stiff competition to similar private academies in Australia and Canada. Thousands of Korean students flock to the Philippines during the peak months of January-February and July-August – school vacation time in Korea – to take crash courses in conversational or business English. Attracted by the affordable tuition and even cheaper cost of living, many opt to stay for 6-month to 1-year courses.

Riding this trend, the Tourism Department in 2003 launched its English as a Second Language Tour Program, which combines language activities with vacation trips. While also targeting Chinese and Japanese students, Koreans make up the bulk of its customers.

Not long after, the Philippines embarked on a targeted marketing campaign backed by a $3.2 million annual budget to attract Korean tourists. Part of this campaign is a Korean language tourism website and a series of advertising materials, including a 30-second television commercial, showing Korean actress Eugene Kim enjoying the beauty of the Philippines.

Honeymooners and businessmen on holiday, says Samaniego of the Tourism Department, comprise the bulk of the tourists, and the country’s beaches and golf courses are the main attractions. Visiting the Philippines is made easier by the country’s lenient visa rules and the increasing availability of direct flights between the two countries.

Jeremy Baik, General Manager of KJL Tour Leader, says that the Philippines is easy to sell to Korean tourists because of its good beaches and resorts. “They look for vacation spots on the Internet and compare pictures of Boracay, Phuket, and Bali. Boracay, with its white beach and emerald waters, easily wins,” he says.

Even though some of the Philippines’s resorts are pricier than their counterparts in Indonesia and Thailand, the cheaper airfare evens out the cost. Thailand, though, still gets twice as many Korean tourists as the Philippines, totaling over 1.1 million in 2006. Baik says this is because Phuket has significantly more hotels and resorts, but local tourism authorities are confident this will not be the case for long.

It is largely for the same reason – low cost of living and English-speaking Filipinos – that many Korean visitors decide to stay. Baik explains that a US$3000 monthly income – a large sum in the Philippines – is hardly enough to sustain a family of four in Korea. But if the fathers leave their families in the Philippines while still working in Korea, they can afford large houses, maids, and other luxuries reserved only for the moneyed.

Bernardo says many Korean parents also opt to have their children take up high school and college in Philippine schools and universities, instead of just short courses, to make sure that they learn English well. The cost of enrolling here is significantly cheaper than sending the kids to school in Canada or the U.S., and the passion for English back in Korea is intense.

On the other hand, Filipinos also seem to be embracing Korean culture. Kimchi is a popular dish, says Sandara Park – a Korean immigrant – who is now a popular local actress/singer whose career began after being voted by Filipinos as the winner of a local talent search. Dubbed Korean television dramas – called Koreanovelas locally – are a passion on primetime TV.

In other words, Koreans are in the Philippines to stay. From the perspective of chilly, expensive Seoul, the Philippines seems to hold the same appeal as Florida does in the United States for residents of New York, and as a result the Philippine Retirement Authority is now actively marketing the country as a retirement haven for Koreans.

It seems that generations of Koreans are likely to be a big part of local life for years to come – from students just starting out, to grandparents resting by the seaside.

koreans - good and bad
written by sarah , July 20, 2010
Koreans. It's a new change for us Filipinos. But a fact that cannot be changed. They are here to stay for whatever reasons, and the best we can do is to look past their nationality and consider them as any normal person of equal footing, the same way we'd like to be treated when we go abroad.
However, having a korean come over here to study or tour or retire etc. is a very different issue from having a korean who stays illegally, sets up businesses under the table, violates Philippine laws, and unethically or unprofessionally treats Filipinos. The latter is an outright insult to our country and should not be taken lightly.

Koreans are purist, they mingle with their own, it seems they'll settle in the country, lots of pinoys have no permanent housing, there's a chance their gonna buy off everything, philippine archepelego has little land for living. What about the local population. They have this "pure race" background a.k.a "god complex", "Im the best" etc. "binuhat sariling bangko". Maybe they feel threatened north korea will wipe them out with nukes (its their war). Please don't let this happen. There must be other things to profit from.

poor filipinos
written by noypi , June 03, 2010
Do you know what really Filipino needs? Filipinos need cooperation to one another like now, as what ive been observed, filipinos are just hoping to the president, they hope that our new president will make OUR poor life to be a good one but if we are just using our mind we are not the only poor person in our country so my point is that, not only the president will do actions but WE are the most responsible for our selves, we are the one who must help our life the most. We Filipinos are like HAmmer and Nails if we will not be hit there will be no actions to be done, I dont want to die seeing my country in hunger, corruptions, and poverty. If this is my last day i'll just wish that philippines will change to a new and peaceful nation even though not that kind of rich like the other country but i will just be contented our country will not be in poverty, famine, corruption and just be more peaceful place to live. How i wish.

Filipino Liberated??
written by Filipina Observer , June 01, 2010
Im a filipino, But as what i''ve been observing 4 today Filipinos change a lot, for
example, filipino always saying that other countries especially america has liberated people but then even in our country there were many liberated ones, we are facing problems like cyber sex, many GRO's, even Sex in phone (SOP), Giving our own self for money especially Early pregnancy and there were many teenagers now are already have experience in sex, even watching unrated films,.So i think before we judge other country lets see first in ours in our own country, and that is one of our sick to judge easily without seeing our own personality, what happend now in our country?
i know what ive said here is not about korean and philippines but ive just share here my feelings in what ive observed hope filipinos realize what i have said and for those parents who can read this please guide your child in the right way,.

Koreans in Phils.
written by Lyn Gregg , March 11, 2010

Probably some of the comments here were little bit negative.mine might be different, because every
people have different experiences.I should say that some Koreans were Good, some were not.
Filipinos got the same problems.ego problems.

right now.i am an American citizen, but my origin was Filipino 100%.This is similar to the problems that
the Americans were facing,The massive immigration in America. The opinions of every individual were
deeply divided, but for me i prefer to be neutral,i hate lambasting other race, because of hate crimes.
I am not against the Koreans coming to Philippines,as long as they respect the Filipino culture and the
law.RESPECT that's all that matters.

Koreans are smart and they know how to survive. But japanese people raped koreans of their pottery, food and art. Yes, we did take ideas from china but the japanese were jealous of korea's land connections with korea. If Japan hadn't enslaved the Koreans. IT would be KOREA and CHINA not japan. The koreans have evolved into a beautiful economy in only a short amount of time, which is impressive. Koreans as well as Japanese are very competitive because there are alot of brilliant genius and over population that is why its hard to find a job in korea if you don't try the best that you possibly can.

Well you know what it all depends on the korean. some are nice some are not. what these comments have said are from one person's prospective. Koreans have a sense of pride as some other countries. Others should have some pride to. So please keep your unrealistic sterotypes to yourselves. koreans are the same as everybody else. and btw JAPANESE COLONIZED THE PHILIPPINES and made them run all around their own country treating them like dogs (which they aren't) so dont you dare say KOREANS ARE INHUMAN.

My opinion about koreans as a filipino living in america :)
written by Pauline , February 21, 2010
Well i am a filipino and i am living i america. I go to a middle school with plenty of koreans some who are waay smarter than me and speak english very well, but there are also some sudents who are new from korea who are learning enlgish. I have many korean friends, MANY. they r all very nice, kind, generous, and man more complimening words. but no race, culture, or person is perfect and yes there are some koreans in my school that i wud like to slap in the face, but i dont agree to how u filipinos there are commenting on how they are stupid this and mean n rude like that. give them a break, their country has gone through alot, their started from scratchafter a war and built up their own country back up again. of course they wud b proud of them selves.even tho sum r too proud of themselves, but still cant say all of them r all too prideful lyk dat. filipinos can b like dat too, in my view filipinos can be (not all) back stabbers, gossipers, and full of pride as well, but we are also intelligent, hospitable, hardworking and many more. also if koreans do cum to the filipinos and keep to themselves and b mean, wat can they do? they cant cummunicate that well and dont understand us filipinos as well. n to move far away from ur country jsust to learn english, dont u think ur self-esteem ill be broken down and that ull be a little ashamed or embaressed. mayb thats y they (koreans) show off brag and to defend their social status? and shudnt we filipinos be proud of our country for attracting people because of our english speaking achievements n welcum those who cum here as well? just saying idk if i am rite, but pls to all filipinos and mean peoples out there be kind to them (koreans n others) no matter what and try to look at life from their persepctive, for our sake as flilipinos( or people). we have to show them that we r caring kind people , love is wat matters. yea well pls excuse my terrible grammar or watevr misakes i hav, im extremely sleepy n im only in seventh grade. smilies/smiley.gif

koreans are better than japanese
written by junior , November 25, 2009
i'm filipino-american and i worked in both countries teaching english. I have to say Koreans are better because they are not like the back-stabbing japanese. Japanese people are two-faced scumbags, and they even have a name for it. 'Honne' is one's true feelings and 'tatemae' is their front and they use it daily. But with Koreans, you won't get any of that bulls**t. Some koreans that initially come across as assholes can actually be pretty decent. I know that this was a big generalization, but I think that this is generally true.

Koreans are a scrappy bunch, and they brag a lot and try to display a lot of machismo. So the important thing to do is NOT to back down from them, especially if it's in the Philippines! Like the Japanese, Koreans are also adept at borrowing (stealing) ideas. Therefore, let's learn from them and use them to our own needs. Learn the Korean language, travel there as an engineer, then return to the Philippines and start your own business. Remember, they have only been rich for the past fifty years! Anything can happen to the fortunes of nations: wars, unrest, disasters, etc. On the other hand, nations can also suddenly become rich, like Korea.

OH COME ON!
written by Firelady Katara , November 15, 2009
Look here people, it isnt about the race that actually matters! You cant simply generalize Koreans or Filipinos in that way. There are different kinds of people in every country around the world. There are gold diggers, snotty snobs, and other kinds of unpleasant characters but that doesnt mean that all of the people inside a country are bad. It depends on the individual and how they were raised. Sure there may be some traits that stand out most for some races but we aren't that very much different.

I hate it when we all have to clash racism. If you want to banter about how messy a korean is, then blame the person, not the country and its people for chrissakes! Wouldnt it hurt your pride if your country would be labeled something utterly rude and out of place just because a certain individual dumped a banana peeling on the floor by accident (probably)? And you didnt have anything to do with it at all! Or do you enjoy the feeling of having discriminating eyes bored right into your back because you're a Filipino?

OMG. This is why we never have world peace.

The best thing to do is just to try to understand each other.

Good communication (meaning no verbal harrasment or the like) would really come a long way. smilies/kiss.gif

i've read most of the comments here on the post. some good. mostly bad. what you say about koreans could be generalized about any other race. the thing that gets me is. most of my friends are korean and they are humble, shairing, respectful and loyal. they well bend over backwards to help others. i can't say that with the filipinos. well lie and cheat and use people.we exploit our own people. look at our country. i think before you start bashing koreans.. look at yourself. look at our country. its a 3rd world country. last time i went to pinas. my parents told me to carry my money in a moneybelt. cause where poor and its dangerous there. i was very sadden by child beggers, pick pockers, prostitutions, killings, drug use and slums.etc.we're not perfect neither. by bashing koreans..where just saying that where better than them. and where not . where all the same. where all human beings.

smilies/smiley.gif I've been dealing with Koreans for more than a year now... The commentaries here are correct in some ways.. Koreans are proud to be Koreans. They think their race is the best. They think that they are better than anybody. But come to think of it, do you know what was their situation when they were in their country? My student once said, if it wasn't for English he wouldn't come to any countries, he would just stay in his country (that's how arrogant they are). It's very difficult to find a job in Korea, it's really difficult to get through high school in Korea, they are expected to be somebody when they are not.
So instead of hating them pity them.. That's why they are like that because of their culture.. They want to be the best in everything when in fact they can't...
I have met a lot of good Koreans.. (but you can't take away "proud" from them)
Be good to them as you are good to everybody..Show them that as Filipinos we are not like them, we have hearts and we also have brains.

Ano? Can't Order Because I am Filipino???
written by Jelly , August 01, 2009
Sure there's good Koreans but I damn sure met some really rotten ones!

I was in Pampanga and I wanted to explore Korean town with my friends. In Korean town they have such places like restaurants and bakeries. We wanted to stop by one of the bakeries and grab a snack. When entering the bakery there were only Koreans inside and they stopped what they were doing and just starred at us. I asked one of the workers if we could get some bread and to my surprise the woman looked me straight in the eye and said...

"This is Korean bakery NO Filipino allowed here!"

I nearly choked at her words. What the hell was this women's problem! First of all I realize that I am in a Korean bakery but this Korean bakery is in the Philippines! She had no right to say I am not allowed at the bakery just because I am Filipino.... I told the b***h

"Ano? Excuse me but your bakery is in the Philippines and since it is in the Philippines, Filipinos have the right to come in and order."

The lady looked at me again and said "No Filipino". At that point my friends and myself were very pissed and we decided to just leave. But before I left I could not help but let out my anger and swear at the women in her native language~

"Ner nun shiba geseki! Dong mogo!"

She got a kick out of that... nearly had a heart attack due to my impressive Korean skills. ^_^

Korean Wave Go Down The Drain
written by Fi-Fi FILIPINO , August 01, 2009
If you are in the Philippines you notice how much Korean culture has been popping up in our country...

Let's start with the music scene. Korean music or K-POP is starting to be played at local music stations as well as music channels on TV like MYX. You also hear the music on shows like ASAP, Wowowee, SOP, etc. Contestants and actors/actresses try to sing the songs in Korean (that Nobody song, Fire song with Sandara, and the music heard on Boys Over Flowers). Just wondering... do you all feel that the majority of us understand the Korean lyrics? My bet would be... NO! We have no clue what the hell is being said (unless we looked up the English/Tagalog translation). Anyway is there no more love for OPM? Come on before supporting some other countries music support your OWN COUNTRY first.

Now let's move onto the television scene. Koreanovelas sure are popular and they are being re-made using Filipino actors/actresses. In my opinion I see the Filipino dramas shrinking. Most of the shows on ABS-CBN and GMA have been copied from other countries! For example Only You (Korea), Rosalinda (Mexico). Filipino dramas seem to be fading except for MMK and Darna (starting soon haha).

Anyway, I feel this Korean Wave is silly. Are we becoming Koreans? We need to preserve our culture and stop copying from others.

YES, it is good to be accepting toward other cultures (Chinese, Japanese, American, etc) but don't adapt to there's and throw away your own!!! Be proud of what you are ~

Am American Perspective
written by Mike T , July 27, 2009

I am a 2nd generation American of Filipino descent who recently visited the country; my last visit was over 15 years ago before the Korean influx. I was quite astonished to see the drastic changes especially the number of Korean tourists and businesses. Every resort I visited in Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, there were Koreans everywhere! My father, a retired engineer who’s been living in PI for 12 years also laments the changes and occasionally complains about Korean golfers (their arrogance) at the country club where he belongs.

Yes, there are some Koreans who are rude, belligerent and as a community they tend to keep to themselves. However, the same could be said about other cultures/ethnic groups. There is nothing unusual if most of my friends are Filipino Americans; then why should we care if Koreans only associate among themselves?

As for the notion that Koreans exploit Filipinos, I think this is a minority as there are Filipinos who also exploit their own ‘kapwa tao’ (did I say this right?) But even if it is prevalent, we ought to blame the government for lack of enforcement of labor and tax laws.

Some speak of the maltreatment of Filipinos in Korea, but what about reported abuses of Filipinos in muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and others? You don’t hear of many Filipinos being jailed or killed in Korea for their religion do you?

If a Korean has a problem with me because I am a Filipino, then that is HIS problem not mine. If a Korean is a racist, then let his hatred consume him inside out; there is more to life than being angry and bitter.

Signed – Proud Balikbayan

I had a korean classmate in my university before. she's really nice. wala naman ako masabi. nagkwento pa nga sha na natatakot daw sha sumakay ng fx dahil naexperience na nya mahold up.

I HATE ANYTHING KOREAN
written by Harry , July 04, 2009

Magpakyut at magpaganda at magpagwapo? Ang sasagwa naman umarte! Pumangit lang tuloy ung storya!

Buti pa ang Japan, kaya sila ang number 2 or 3 sa mundo. E ang Korea? Wag na silang mag expect na mataob pa nila ang Japan through over exploitation and beautifying of their country through visual media (songs, phutang dramas). Puro sila cheap shots! Mga lintang unti unting hihigop ng isipan ng mga Pilipino! To the point na sambahin na mga balat nila, or worse, pati mga tae nila!

To Mr. Sir,

Pidgin English? Lol. That brand of English only comes from China. And besides, why complain when you guys are so used to hearing Ozark, Redneck, Cowboy and Ghetto English anyway. BTW, did you watch the spelling bee competition in America lately ? The US judges could barely understand the kids from Scotland, Wales and New Zealand and had to beg them to repeat what they just said. They almost threw their arms up out of frustration. So in that sense, I leave you with a question to ponder on. Which English is the right one?

smilies/angry.gif For the Most part, Korea is okay? Maybe, They are nice to you if they want to gain something from you, especially in business. They are accustomed to "Deceit" a common practice evident in their everyday dealings here in Korea. Philippines, Do not be fooled by them just because of "Money" I dont care if they spend 800.00 to 1,000.00 there a month, I spend more than that in one week and I treat the filipino people and the custom with the utmost of respect. I know the Philippines is strapped, Maybe the government should stop exporting it`s talented labor force and start using the Money it has Bankrolled in their pockets to create a foundation in the philippines to create more jobs within instead of losing those talented people to other countries which, I might add They don`t always come home to spend that money there, some marry off to a foreigner and don`t like the Idea of ever returning. Build an infrastructure to Keep the pinoy in the philippines, and help the Philippine economy Grow from within...Not out to in. I am Filipino, I am Proud, and I "Despise the way The Pinoy is treated in Korea, Those who read this and have been to Korea Know through first hand experience, but dont get me wrong, there are some really nice Korean People, But the Majority, due to the Rudeness of their Culture are only in the Philippines for one thing, To take over the Philippines Hectare by Hectare, and then eventually the Government. Forget about the external cash supply, WAKE UP GOVERNMENT OF THE PHILIPPINES!!!! Build from within this great Country Called the Philippines, Pac Man has started it, Who will Follow? I will!

Welcome Koreans!
written by star08 , May 31, 2009
Hello guys, I just came across about this article browsing about Korea. I love Koreans. They are the most sweetest and intelligent, religious and innovative people you can encounter or be friends with. Let's accept who they are and their culture. Of course, we, as Filipinos, would not like negative trends or attitudes. Friendly relations can only t hrive if its nurtured. Let's help each other, we can grow and learn from our neighbors. Koreans in Philippines love Philippines and would like it to call
a second home. We should be tolerant of others since we come to other countries, too. Friendship starts with friendship . When Koreans decides to be Filipinos someday, it means we did a good job on thriving with great nationality, love of people regardless of color, flove of God, freedom and hospitality.

For Sale Philippines ! ! !
written by philip , May 13, 2009
smilies/sad.gif Sad to say but true... they are now passing a law making it legal for foreigners to buy land properties? Who do you think will buy first? Koreans not Japanese, Americans, etc....? Why....? Because Korea is divided and no one has peace of mind in a place like that? Teaching them is not a bad idea... but maybe they have to include culture and local customs must be part of their education? Lets not be racist to them or to anyone.... everybody deserve a better life after all they are not taking it from us using force? These might teach Pilipinos of the future how to preserved the land for the children? May this act awaken those pinoys who doesn't care about and just live to be happy by making kids without considering their welfare? Those were the termites of our land... they are not worthy to be called Pilipino's for they give nothing but shame and poverty? Now if you call yourself a true Pilipino.... work for it and not just say it! Imagine exporting workers.... now selling our country? SHAME TO THOSE WHO VOTED FOR THESE NEW LAW !!!! I am calling for those legislators to pass a law.... preserving our land, limiting birth based on income level, creating FREE schools especially to the poorest? Pass a law that grant FREE college education to the poorest people? FREE high school to everybody.... create a law mandating newly graduate teachers to serve in rural areas for 2 years like nurses? Give good benefits and incentives to those who volunteers to served the poor? GET RID OF THE BARANGAY SYSTEM ! IT DOESN'T WORK !!

Oh, I absolutely agree Koreans have indeed invaded our country. My family and I love to travel around the Philippines and wherever we go there are Koreans! Even in the University I'm staying in is starting to be filled with Koreans who, as it was said in this article, have their own world. I have met good Koreans & bad. We can't always generalize things, and as a behavioral science major I simply must not be ethnocentric. No culture or race is above the other....but sometimes it is so hard...someone told me that the Koreans who live here are well, not well off in their home country and some have authority problems, some have really bad behavior...must be the result of our very lenient immigration and thus we encounter Koreans here that are not so good. But again not all of them are bad. I have my share of Korean friends in school. They're good people. They even apologize for how their other countrymen act...yeah sometimes I get pissed with those Koreans who don't give a care in the world and don't know where they are. I had my share of experience of being looked down on as well by one of them. My dad even had a confrontation with a Korean guy in Bagiou. He was standing on the road not on the side walk, smoking cigar with friends and he saw our car going to park there and he did not even bother to move and got mad as to why my dad honked at him. Sheesh. I prepared myself if ever he decided to hit my dad I would give him a piece of my mind. I'm thinking of studying Korean so those bad ones won't be able to fool me. Another thing that pisses me off is that we always adjust for foreigners...grrr...they come here they should give the respect that is due to us and not act like this is their own nesting grounds.

RESPECT. That is one thing I ask of these people. We are opening our country to so many foreigners and yet we don't even get the respect that we deserve. That really is so irritating. The kindness and hospitality that we give is MOSTLY taken advantage off and taken for granted.

CHANGE. I just hope that the government be wise before embracing foreign investments or offers in helping our country. When will they ever learn that there is no such thing as free lunch. These investments won't be offered if they know they won't get anything bigger in return. I'm not saying to be suspicious of everything...just be wary. Trust is good, but entrusting the future of our country in these foreign investments or aid is like throwing our future to hell. We are the only ones who would have sincere intentions for the betterment of our OWN country not others.

BELIEVE. We should believe ourselves more. We Filipinos are equipped with great minds, great talents we just don't have one goal. We search for greener pastures and want to develop ourselves but we don;t bring back what we learn to our mother land. I pray that one day all Filipinos would stop running after their own dreams of being rich and leaving their land behind, but as they run after their dream they bring their own country with them. Humbleness is good but it is different fron being bashful and being not proud of who we are. Filipinos are really gifted. Flexible, versatile, can endure hardships, great minds, huge hearts...and a Christian nation. With God by our side why should we fear other people/race? We should start being a real Christian nation. Be a great country for God.

Now, I don't mind whoever comes in our country as long as they give the due respect our beautiful country deserves as well as it citizens it's fine. But if ever they do something against us...let God deal with them. ^^

Philippines has always been a blessed country and always will be.

God Bless us all.

How Long Will the Koreans Stay?
written by Mr. Anonymous , February 10, 2009
Depends on whether they stay in the Philippines. If Koreans just visit as tourists or students, and add money into the economy - while providing useful competition against Philippine oligopolies with Korean businesses and foreign investments - great.

If Koreans come to the Philippines and stay there in large numbers, and especially young Koreans who will have children (as opposed to elderly retirees who won't), that could be bad. Filipinos could be displaced in their own country. Furthermore, there is the perception that Koreans look down on Filipinos. Having Koreans do that in the Philippines itself is intolerable.

Fortunately, the Filipino birthrate is so high that the odds of Koreans (who have a very low birthrate) displacing Filipinos in the Philippines is currently very small.

Long story short: visiting Koreans and Korean investments hiring Filipinos, good; Koreans settling in droves in the Philippines and belittling Filipinos, bad.

I'm hoping that many of the 'overseas Filipino workers' return to the Philippines, tell others how more developed or healthier countries are run, and get the Philippines to have a workable government and a healthy, competitive economy.

PINOY ASAN ANG YABANG MO? PHILIPPINES: A KOREAN INFESTED COUNTRY

Filipinos are being treated mercilessly by these foreigners specially these Kimchi-breath invaders because they let them.

It doesn't mean that they're foreigners...they're better than us..

Oh come on...they wear the same clothes everyday...
and their breath (admit it) stinks as hell.
GOOD KIMCHI

ALANGAN NAMANG PAPADAIG KA SA MGA YAN?

Yeah...it's a good opportunity for Filipinos to teach these people English...

BUT

WAG NAMAN TAYONG MASYADONG MAPAGBIGAY...HAYAAN NYO NA TAYO NALANG ANG MAGALING MAG-ENGLISH SA ASYA...ha!

KOREANS, MOST OF THEM ARE USERS. ( Based on my drought-like experiences )THEY DON'T HAVE THIS UTANG-NA-LOOB OR SENSE OF GRATITUDE CHARACTER, UNLIKE FILIPINOS..IF THEY'RE DONE ON YOU..THEY'LL JUST GONNA TRASH YOU OUT.

I'm not a full-racist...but I just loathe those who treat my own skin as ruthless as hell.

I hope this opinion of mine shall be heard by the
brave Pinoys out there.

Exchange Student to Korea
written by Elliot , April 25, 2008
I lived there for 1 year and all I can say that, inasmuch as my experiences are concerned, Koreans are such great people. Of course there are rotten ones here and there. But c'mon! All countries have their own share of rotten tomatoes. I've had the chance to teach there, and ALL of the families I taught have been very kind to me--they prepare foods and overfeed me, sometimes we eat outside, and they drive me to and fro my dorm. I've never been treated here the way I was treated there. And yeah, you could say that I love Korea. If you wanna know more about life in Korea thru an exchange student's spectacles, visit: Everything Kimchi That's my blog.

Philippine( )(-) = Korea ( )(-)
written by Juan de la Cruz , March 13, 2008
" Do unto others what you want others do unto you. " If not, good luck nlang s knila...
- I think you already knew what I'm trying to say.

" positive begets positive. "
- They will surely hire English Filipino teachers in Korea. It's the word of mouth that would help our country arise from poverty. Later, asian countries like japan, china,etc... would know that Filipinos could be a competent English teacher and would eventually hire Filipino English teacher in the near future. This skill would help not only our country but including our neighboring countries.

" Love of country... Burning with patriotism... is the key to uplift our country Philippines..."
-After the Korean War, may lives was lost and nothing was remained. Korea was one of the poorest country before. They envied us, Filipinos, as one of the rich countries in Asia. We are the number one provider of lumber, coffe, etc... Until, the president of Korea sent many Koreans to Germany as nurses in order to help their country even with a little wages. One day, as the president went to Germany to borrow money in order for them to build factories, a vast number of Koreans went to the airport to welcomed their president. They cried and ask only one question saying, when would they go back to their country. As their president cried and told that they would still work, a little bit longer. Eventually, Germany lend them money and the president build many factories in Korea. After 40 years of continued hardwork with burning patriotism, they're now one of the successful countries in the world. They buy their local products and they produce products for their own country.

- "team work= TEAMWORK!"

-"Abusing the good act of others is like beating yourself on the ground"

Faith in HIM that we will have Peace,Hardwork,Patriotism, and Love...
of our beloved country Philippines..

Koreans who are going to the Philippines are just average class here. Apartment with one room and a sala where to eat and sleep he he . Better in the Philippines the kitchen is separated to the sleeping quarters. Don't be stupid you Filipinos to look those flocking rrrr can't pronounce l but r.

korean wave in the philippines
written by Kim Su Min , December 28, 2007
there are a lot of OFWs in korea, both legal and illegal. there are also a lot of korean investors, students and tourists in the philippines. The equation is simply about money. I just hope that filipinos treasure their identities and heritage even they embrace other nations.

I don't like Koreans. I see them absolutely everywhere and I don't know why I absolutely find it irritating when I see them. It's like they think so highly of themselves and always have this arrogant swagger that they always do. I really don't like it, they're not friendly, or approachable or warm at all.

let\'s put some consideration
written by nonadaj , October 25, 2007
Koreans in the Phil is no longer a hot issue aand shouldn't be made a hot one. for all we know, though, some may deny if , they bring a lot of good to the country and to its citizens! just imagine the young ones in slum areas being supported by them in their studies without asking or giving high requirements. those people having paid(per hour)for their part time job as English instructor to augment income.if we happen to meet incidents about f0ilipinos being degraded by some koreans let's not generalize them all after all humans are unique in their own ways as koreans are different like filipinos. my point is how would you feel in a filipino would commit a mistake and all of us would be drag with the error of only one? should we say "yes" we are like that? os would we say its his fault and not mine why should I be included with such issue?

Let\'s not forget to protect our Philippines
written by carina , October 22, 2007
I know we are quick to open our arms to those who visit us but let's make sure that we are not being taken advantage of. I can't shake the thought that Koreans have a reputation of having really bad business ethics (see here: http://www.apmforum.com/columns/boye46.htm) and sometimes bad manners (sorry for the rest of the Koreans who are well mannered..). And there are a lot of foreigners who are already planning their retirement in the Philippines (Americans, Koreans, etc). Will there still be enough Philippines left to Filipinos? Or are we going to be second-class citizens in our own country in the future?

Not applied to all Koreans (But really, this is happening right now and I am sharing)
written by Yam , September 27, 2007
We all have our biases. But I can say that I have a bad feedback for some of the Koreans who stay here in the Philippines. I am unfortunate to be under a bad employer who power trips on his employer. He must be laughing at us now on how he manipulates us because we wont even do anything but obey him. This is something personal really. I just want to voice out for most of those who have felt violated for "some" of these people.

And no. PLEASE. For some of you who reads this: Do not spam me for some you-are-racist crap comment. You have no inkling of what is happening here in Baguio.

READ THIS: WE DON'T EVEN GET PAID FOR OT, NO HOLIDAY PAY, NO BIR Remittances, NO SSS, NO PHILHEALTH and well, our effing boss treats us like s**t!

We actually called DOLE to have a routine-check up on the place. But their waiting for someone in our office to file a complaint. Well that would be me.

I can no longer take the crap that their doing.

I just hope that our government would just shut up on some issue their handling right now and focus on what is really happening. We all look so stupid to the other races and the bad thing is, local agencies get paid to shut up and approve their visas. Unless we REVAMP the damn system though.

I just hope that we don't get controlled and manipulated in our own country. It's about time we do something.

So I hope it'll enlighten you.

My apologies on the other Koreans who get stereotyped because of this (who are very decent and nice) you should tell your counterparts to behave themselves and stop being all high and mighty.

RESPECT BEGETS RESPECT.

Nuff said.

filipino-korean cultural enrichment program
written by marlon , August 28, 2007
i'm from the south... not south south but BF south hehehe.
it's been three years since a korean family moved in next to us. and all i can say is they're really nice. of course the first couple of months were a bit awkward because of the fact that they lived next door but we hardly ever greet each other when we pass them on the street. but after they've settled and learned a few english, things started to get a little better. my mom even got their mom into a bit of gardening. their daughter - oh their daughter (sigh) - knows a lot of pinoy swear words thanks to my cousin. and imagine my surprise when my said cousin started cursing at me in korean. and there were times that we had them over for dinner. all in all i'd say the relationship between the two countries, at least in our little plot of land, is very good. i guess the only thing that could shake this friendship is my dad's awkward questions about our other korean neighbors. "not all koreans know each other dumbass!" my mom says. hehehehe

The Koreans' obsession with the English language stems from the fact that their kids need to pass TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) to gain entry to Seoul National University which is a prerequisite for acceptance. The slots are only limited and the qualifying exams are highly competitive. Upon graduation, the students are almost assured of landing a good paying job in one of the "Chaebols" or the large companies i.e. Hyundai, Samsung, LG etc. because these firms put a great premium on proficiency in the English language. A lot of Koreans also have dreams of migrating to the West i.e. US, Canada, UK and they know that learning English would facilitate an easier transition and open up more opportunities for them in their host countries. The lower cost of living in our country enables even the lower middle class in Korea to send their kids to good schools in the Philippines rather than sending them directly to the West which is economically and logistically more prohibitive. If we don't let them study in the Philippines they will go to Malaysia, Singapore etc. or they can still continue hiring native English speakers from the West. Either way, we just have to wake up to the call of globalization and learn how to ride on the opportunities created by this need. For example, the native English speakers in Korea are a little threatened by the fact that the "hagwons" there are starting to hire Filipino English teachers because they know that we can be just as good if not better in some cases, while charging less for our services. This value proposition is also what is driving China and Japan to hire Filipino teachers if recent trends are any indication. Another draw for them might be because the Canadian embassy in Manila is the RPC (Regional Processing Center) for the Asian region if you're applying for Canada's Federal Immigration Program and since a lot of Koreans, Chinese etc. have dreams of migrating to Canada it becomes all the more easier for them to submit an application here in Manila especially if they graduate in one of our top universities where English is the medium of instruction thereby eliminating the need to have their transcript of records translated as is the case if they were to graduate in their home countries. It would be ignorant to assume that only Koreans are benefiting from their presence in our country. If you see them at our malls chances are they will dine in one of the fast food chains where Korean dishes are not as readily available, watch movies in one of our cinemas as part of their english immersion training. Our colleges and universities also benefit when the Koreans eventually pursue higher education at one of these institutions. Their rental, tuition, books and transportation expenses etc. are for the most part served by our local businesses and service providers. When they build resorts in Boracay or hotels in Cebu, I don't think they will hire Korean construction workers to build it. When they play at our golf courses, their golf club membership benefits the golf club operators. Granted, they have become competitors in certain niche areas especially when they serve their fellow Koreans but overall It would be safe to assume that we're on the plus side of the cash flow equation. If anything, it should flatter our country because we're attracting people from more affluent countries and also stimulating the local economy which in a way is really a paradox considering that Filipinos are also leaving the country in greater numbers.

i can\'t help but think that they are using us
written by samantha98 , August 09, 2007
there are positive and negative sides to this whole 'koreans coming to the philippines' deal..positive..of course, all the money they bring in and so on..but i really can't help but think that they're using us for their own good..i mean, in the long run, they won't need us anymore when almost all of them know how to speak english...and almost all of the things i've read about this whole deal..they keep on saying that the cost of living here is a lot cheaper than in their country...it kind of hurts..although i know it's the truth...it still hurts to hear that...the problem with us filipinos is we are so blinded by other countries' culture...we adore the americans and now, the koreans, the japanese etc...i'm not saying that we shouldn't because we can't do that..we can't close our relationships with other countries but i hope that each one of us would appreciate and love our filipino heritage and not let other races use us...i mean, we are known to be really good at english..it's considered as our strength...would you just give it away?

written by phil , July 26, 2007
First of all, I agree to what Mr. Damaso has stated in his article. I suppose that we share the same sentiments regarding the matter about the unchecked surge of korean nationals in our country. Personally i dislike posting statements because it is impersonal, but the matter at hand is urgent. What mr.Damaso stated misses something that is essential, and that is exploitation in terms of labour and sexual abuses and i will stop here to facilitate suspense. Regarding to mike's statement, i totally disagree with you. Since according to the author the Filipino public cant understand korean signbords allover the country, i urge you mr. mike to translate this: hindi mgandang tignan ang sitwasyong ito bilang ikinalulungkot lamang ng komunidad ng mga koreano. tanungin nyo mga sarili nyo kung ano ang pinag-uugatan ng problema. hindi kami ang problema, kundi kayo.

Korean ESL students

Students, indeed, flock here. It's peak season for ESL learners. My Korean students are staying here for six weeks to learn English. They say they love the Philippines because Filipinos are so warm and everything's so cheap. They want to stay. But I tell them they should think twice about living and working here as the pay is not something to be enthusiastic about.
