Abdul Taib Mahmud
Finally, embarrassed that the Swiss are investigating Abdul Taib Mahmud, the MACC acts

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's decision to go after Abdul Taib Mahmud over allegations that he had stashed millions in Swiss banks probably was out of embarrassment over Swiss financial authorities' earlier decision to look into the Sarawak Chief Minister's tangled fortune, sources in Kuala Lumpur say .

"We are investigating Taib," commission head Abu Kassim Mohamed told the state news agency Bernama, although the agency refused to give further details.

Although Transparency International Malaysia and other NGOs including the Kuching-based Sarawak Report and opposition political parties for months have lodged detailed reports of Taib's holdings with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the extent of his riches have been the stuff of legend in Malaysia if not the world, the agency has long been silent about the complaints.

"The MACC was compelled to do so after Swiss authorities had done so," a well-placed political source in Kuala Lumpur told Asia Sentinel.  "It would be weird if the Swiss produced evidence while the MACC says nothing."

Taib's holdings have been the subject of a devastating and detailed series of disclosures by the Sarawak Report and the Switzerland-based Bruno Manser Fund, minutely describing a vast, allegedly illegal empire stretching from the UK to Canada to the United States to Australia and beyond that is believed to be worth in excess of US$1 billion.

The Bruno Manser Fund is named for a Swiss activist who disappeared in Sarawak's jungles while campaigning against deforestation and its effects on the Penan tribal community. The fund claims that Taib is "the main culprit behind the destruction of Sarawak's tropical rainforests" and is "believed to have acquired billions of dollars of ill-gotten assets, most of which have been sent overseas."

Both Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad attempted to talk the 75-year-old Taib into quitting as chief minister prior to the April state election that the Barisan Nasional won, the source said, although the national ruling coalition was largely abandoned by ethnic Chinese and urban dwellers in the state.

The Barisan Nasional pulled out all the stops to aid in the reelection campaign, criss-crossing the state to campaign along with a flock of other Barisan stalwarts to aid the chief minister's party's reelection campaign.

"In the last elections, Najib had to personally campaign in Sarawak for one week to attempt to quell the discontent over Taib," the source said. "Tun Dr M (Mahathir) also addressed a mass rally, mostly bumis (indigenous tribes), of course. Najib was running all up and down Sarawak trying to get votes. Taib's machinery was more than happy to accommodate the PM, knowing that Chinese votes would go the other way anyway."

That left the premier and the Malaysian political leadership campaigning frantically to try to rescue a man who demonstrably has amassed a huge fortune by allegedly illegally awarding timber harvesting licenses to companies that have denuded vast tracts of the North Borneo state.  Environmental activists complain bitterly that flying over Sarawak shows the state's topography is virtually barren up to the border of the Indonesian state of Kalimantan, which makes up the rest of the island. In the 30 years of Taib's reign as chief minister, they say, timber companies have cut more than 90 percent of the tropical rainforest, leaving forest-dwellers like the Penan deprived of their means of subsistence and starving.

Taib "should have done like (former Singapore Prime Minister) Lee Kuan Yew did, and quit," the Kuala Lumpur political source said.  Although Taib has said he would step down after the election, he has so far refused to reveal any detailed succession plans.

On May 12, Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Ray announced that she was asking Swiss financial authorities to investigate the chief minister's assets held in Swiss financial institutions. In a letter to the Bruno Manser Fund, Calmy-Ray indicated that if the probe finds evidence of corruption from timber sales, Taib's Swiss assets could be frozen.

The Fund alleged that Elia Geneid, a Swiss national who married into the Taib family, has profited from the use of lands held by native Sarawakian tribes. In February 2010, the Fund alleged that 49 companies connected to Taib in eight countries are thought to be worth hundreds of millions, if not billions of US dollars.

"Taib is believed to have invested a great deal in the once secretive Swiss banks over past decades, although, following recent reforms, he has more recently focused his attention on Monaco which remains famously lax on the matter of money-laundering," the Sarawak Report said.

The question that arises immediately is who the Swiss authorities would return the funds to if they were discovered to be gained from the illegal sale of timber or other government assets. The Taib-led Barisan Nasional coalition was returned to office with 54.5 percent of the votes but holds 55 of the state assembly's 71 seats. If the Swiss were to indeed freeze Taib's Swiss-based assets, returning them to the Malaysian government would presumably put them back into the hands of the state leadership, his surrogate at the moment even ifhe quits..

In addition to the Bruno Manser Fund, the Sarawak report, in a long series of reports prior to the election, showed, for instance, that family members and corporations connected to Taib have properties in Canada worth in excess of US$100 million. Taib's children are the shareholders and directors of numerous companies controlling residential and commercial buildings in Australia, Britain and the United States worth additional hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sakti International Corp. in the United States manages properties totaling an estimated US$80 million including the Abraham Lincoln Building, which houses the FBI's offices in Seattle, Washington. Records made public by the Sarawak Report showed that a Taib family dwelling in Seattle was purchased for US$1 from a company to which the Sarawak government granted a timber concession.

Just a Smoke Screen

Still remember the episode of Teoh Beng Hock, where one expert says he was unconcious when he hit the pavement, and the other says he was ? Welcome to Malaysia politics. The intention of MACC is just to protect the dear old Taib, a long time ally of the shadow figures. Taib has no authority to rape the forest without tacit approval from his master (guess who :-) ). When the Swiss investigation does conclude, the MACC will come out with it's own report to say ......... NOT GUILTY. Remember Altantuya and the conflicting confessions of the private investigator ?

Now, Najib has toured the US, Japan, ... etc looking for FDI that has literally slowed to a trickle into Malaysia. All that is also a shadow play ...... looks at the drum beatings from the local news to highlight his tour. WOW.

ALL NAJIB HAS TO DO IS TO ANNOUNCE THERE WILL BE NO MORE QUOTA IN HIRING LOCAL MALAYSIANS ACCORDING TO RACE, BUT ALL HIRING WILL BE BASED ON COMPETENCY BASIS. SECONDLY, THERE WILL BE NO GIVING OF COMPANY EQUITY TO "SILENT PARTNERS" WHO WILL STAND TO PROFIT WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING - AKA "SUBSIDY" MENTALITY. THIRD, ROOT OUT THE CORRUPTION THAT IS ENDEMIC IN THE GOVT DEPARTMENTS THAT DEALS WITH INVESTMENT AND BUSINESS PROCESS.

Thank you to Asia Sentinel for following up on the old man taib's case, and to all readers who are concerned about Malaysia, a very rich country, but very poor in leadership integrity.

Datuk Najib, this is an important communique. Please dont ignore it.

Today, in Malaysia, 200,000 non – felonious, financial casualties are being brutalized by an ill conceived law in Malaysia. . The victims are non - criminal men, women, elders and youths. They languish to a slow death in syndicate - controlled financial dungeons due to an anomaly in that law, (created in 1967). This backward, cruel law does not give a financial causality an auto discharge - even after 5 torturous years of bankruptcy.

Killers, robbers, fraudsters, drug pushers and human traffickers are automatically freed after their sentence. They even get a “50%” discount from their sentences if they enter a guilty plea. This humane privilege is not extended to a financial causality in Malaysia. Predators manipulate this ugly situation to gain vast and corrupt wealth

We acknowledge sadly that this message of mercy will not have any consequence on the greater majority. That’s why we instead direct this plea to those who allow compassion to rule their lives. This is an opportunity to deliver an act of kindness without having to sacrifice a single Ringgit. They can do so by simply forwarding this mail to other humane people.

This collective act is necessary so that the Government of Malaysia can be urged to correct this vicious crime against a fallen segment of society. This will give 250,000 non-felonious Malaysians a second chance in life. This is a plea to have pity on their innocent families and dependents.

Remember, all that’s required is a legislation to correct that anomaly that will end this brutal situation. Please visit http://www.roguesmalaysia.blogspot.com/ to know more of this vile truth.
Thank you.

IBAN WARRIOR "LESTER MELANYI" aka HERO DAYAK HAS DONE IT!
written by Dayak Reporter, June 15, 2011
For Taib, aka "Tok Uban", "Pek Moh", "Thief Minister", "Papa Orang Minyak", etc, etc; my best advice is "Better learn how to fly, and quick too!!!".

So, finally after all these years; MACC finally comes for tea with the prophet of greed??? It irks me that long before, in the beginning of time, even when MACC was called ACA; reports have already been lodged but neither was there action, nor was there any media coverage of any sort. (BOO TO THE LOCAL MALAYSIAN MEDIA FOR EITHER BEING TOO SCARED, OR TOO CORRUPT TO PARTICIPATE IN PRINTING THE NEWS FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC! TAIB HAS ALWAYS HOGGED THE FRONT PAGE OF THE SARAWAKIAN NEWSPAPERS, BUT WHY IS IT SO THAT NEWS OF THIS MAGNITUDE FAIL TO BE PUBLISHED??? )

Incredible as it may seem, the hero that brought this whole unimaginable before episode to light was the little lban boy from Tabuan Laru in Sarawak's state capital of Kuching, Lester Melanyi; who was the brain behind the "Body-Slam" on Taib, currently employed with Sarawak Report and is based in London, England. According to sources it is believed that Lester is the "real brain" behind the SR and RFS and that its creator Clare Rewcastle Brown is the lightweight.

Kudos to you Iban brave!

Now, it has brought about a head-on investigation as well as lined up "Lester the brave lban warrior" as the key witness, or shall we say "Star" witness in the MACC probe on Taib, which one will expect to be either the story of the century for the natural resources-rich state of Sarawak, or become a cover-up as evident in the RPK case files and many other cases in the past!

Only time will tell! Idup Lester, idup lban! Long live the king!

Extreme corruption in Malaysia
written by alan newman, nz, September 04, 2011
Foreign Experts assessed M'sia's illegal outflow of funds at RM880 billion in 8 years! PM Najib, Home Minister Hishamuddin, Sarawak’s Taib Mahmud are all experts in deception & twisting of facts, just like those leaders & ex-leaders of Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, North Korea, Burma.

They cheated & rigged elections & when we have peaceful rally they say we want to cause chaos, and tarnish Malaysia’s image. Image was tarnished long ago by those politicians walking in Putrajaya and Kuching….

They spend all their time politicking, back-stabbing fabricating crimes blamed on the Opposition….They are not leading, progressing (like Singapore) and not doing Malaysia any good at all.

They excel in purchases & projects running in billions. The bigger the more kick-backs & thefts. Corruption is Crime.

The French military/submarine deal (which Malaysia needs the least) paid over RM300million in kick-backs resulting in the Mongolian Lady’s threat to expose & her subsequent blasted death. Likewise Ross Boyert, Taib’s former Aide in USA & murdered Swiss Activist Bruno Mansur

The undisclosed outflow of funds from Malaysia in 8 years was RM880 billion (not million).

Since the days of Taib’s Uncle Yakub, tens of millions of acres of forest/logging concessions have been awarded to families & cronies, without open transparent public tenders to return wealth to the poor people. Sarawak’s total value of logs & timber products hovered around RM6 to10 billion annually. Oil Palm is surpassing that mark now. It’s not just timber & oil palm in Sarawak, almost everything under the sun….too many to mention.. This is Hell of a plunder, and that’s just in one state among 13.

Their racial discrimination is TOTAL! In USA a minority race ascended the Obama Presidency. An Indian or Chinese deserves to be a Malaysian PM too. Petronas is 99% Malay. So are thousands of other national assets. Everyone is a citizen entitled to the Nation’s wealth.

Enough info for MACC to arrest Taib Mahmud now!

http://www.sarawakreport.org/2011/12/keeping-it-in-the-family-how-taib-the-godfather-corruptly-controls-cms/

“The above information, which is publicly available in company and stock exchange records, is quite enough for the MACC to issue a warrant for the arrest of Taib Mahmud. He and his family have not only done business in Sarawak, they have run Sarawak as a business along the lines of a family mafia, using his political power to extract virtually all the country’s wealth.”

Time for stop work & street protest to begin!
