![]() Dear friend of Asia Sentinel: I am John Berthelsen, the editor of Asia Sentinel. I write to you as your colleague and friend reviewing our proud past and looking to a better future based on our common values and interests. For more than three years, our professional ethics and skills have led us to offer you elite and independent journalism covering Asia courtesy of our tough-minded reports and accomplished writers. We feature material that the mainstream media omits or overlooks - often until we print it, and then they follow us. This includes how some Asian governments attempt to control the flow of news and information - and the heroes who resist. Our pool of experts analyze and contextualize the trends and raw data that help you understand this intriguing and ever-evolving continent. Our experienced journalists include Philip Bowring, a veteran Asia hand, Dr. Willy Lam on China, Neeta Lal and Siddharth Srivastava on India and Todd Crowell on Japan - as well as many others. We can boast that professional journalists and editors, policy wonks, politicians, bureaucrats, educators, intelligence analysts, human rights activists, environmentalists and artists turn to us to inform their decisions. Our readership continues to rise as we mature as a news site with a reputation for analysis and out-of-the-box coverage. You will recognize yourself among our followers. Now we face a powerful challenge, namely fashioning a business model for the internet age. We both suffer if we reduce Asia Sentinel's articulate, topical and aggressive watch-dog coverage on who governs you, how to make money, threats to your security and ways to entertain yourself. Therefore, we request that you invest in our joint future with a donation that we will responsibly spend on maintaining and expanding our site's features. Any donations would be greatly appreciated, but a grant of US$100 means that you ensure our ongoing efforts. And you confirm that it is worth it for you to remain a reader so as to advance your understanding of public affairs, and enrich your life. Make a gift via our PayPal site. We gratefully accept all donations through this site and will list contributors' names in a Roll Call of Honor. As the Asia Sentinel's editor, I thank you for your readership and attention. And now I must return to my work of producing the journalism that you want. With thanks. Sincerely, John Berthelsen Editor, Asia Sentinel Comments

I contributed USD20 through PayPal today. I wish I could give more but the economy over here is awful right now and it's the holiday season to boot. But I will continue to help out when I can. Keep up the great work, AS

Keep Up the GREAT Works
written by Devotedly loyal , November 26, 2009
Keep up the great job you have done! After the old Far Eastern Economic Review, there's no publications up to par like yours. Your web site may have enemies, especially with some disgruntled governments in the region, but that's precisely what true and great journalism is all about - and not simply a government mouthpiece you see in places we know where. Persevere!! Credos and bravo to you!

| Freedom of Expression Too Precious to Throw AwayThursday, 04 February 2010 | Alice Poon

I'd be more than happy to donate you money to keep up your truly excellent reporting, especially on Thailand and its rapacious elite. However, in a manner of speaking, Paypal wants my life history, copies of the last three months of my electricity bills, a copy of my gas utility bill, a copy of my passport, a copy of my driving license, the numbers of all my credit cards etc, etc, before it allows me to even maintain an account with them. And they, or may not be, happy to share all that information with anyone who asks. One can not know, and trust, these large corporations.
In my opinion, if you are about press freedom, Paypal is your antithesis and an inappropriately strange choice for a site like yours. Please provide us another option to support your cause.
