Malaysian Aide's July Death 'Probably Homicide'

On July 16, according to the testimony of a Thai pathologist, Teoh Beng Hock, a 29-year-old aide to an opposition politician, was probably beaten during a marathon questioning session, sodomized, strangled unconscious, dragged to a window of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission in Kuala Lumpur and thrown to his death.

The country's law enforcement establishment maintains that Teoh committed suicide by leaping from the MACC building after the inquiry was concluded into irregularities in his boss's accounts. But it is far from the first "suicide" in custody and what happened to Teoh happens all too frequently when the luckless collide with the powerful in Malaysia. His real killers are unlikely ever to be identified. As many as 350 people have died in custody since 1990. The privileged are rarely brought to trial.

The most infamous recent case before Teoh's is that of Altantuya Shaariibuu, a 28 year-old Mongolian translator who was murdered in 2006 by two bodyguards of then-Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. Altantuya had been jilted by Najib's best friend, Abdul Razak Baginda, and was demanding money from him.

Although numerous witnesses and evidence connected Najib to the affair, he was never questioned or put on the witness stand, nor was his chief of staff, Musa Safri, who Baginda said in a cautioned statement he approached about getting Altantuya from ceasing her harrassment. His two bodyguards were convicted of the murder although one, in his confession, said the two men were to be paid RM100,000 to kill her. The court never asked who would pay the money. The confession wasn't allowed in court. Baginda was acquitted without having to put on a defense and promptly left the country and Najib was eventually named Prime Minister.

Such questionable cases go back to at least the early 1980s when Sultan Mahmud Iskandar of Johor was dubbed the "killer king" by the British tabloids after he shot a trespasser to death on his property. He also reportedly assaulted and killed a golf caddy who was said to have laughed when the sultan missed a golf stroke and he maimed the caddy's brother. He later was alleged to have assaulted and injured a hockey coach, kicking off a constitutional crisis that led to former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's removal of legal immunity from prosecution for all of Malaysia's nine sultans, although Iskandar was never either arrested or jailed.

There are plenty more. In 1988 an attractive young woman named Mustakizah Jaafar, who owned a video rental business in Malacca, was found hacked to death by unknown assailants. Mustakizah reportedly was pregnant at the time of her death. She was believed to be having an affair with Megat Junid Megat Ayob, the onetime UMNO deputy home affairs minister, who died in January 2008 of cancer.

No one was ever charged with Mutakizah's murder. The widespread gossip about Megat Junid's connection with Mustakizah didn't do his political career any harm. He was ultimately named Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister in 1997 although he lost his parliamentary seat two years later and retired from politics.

In 2002 the decomposed body of Haslezah Ishak, the attractive young second wife of Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, second in line to the throne of Perak, whom he had met in a karaoke lounge, was found under a bridge, clad in a bra and jeans. Four men, including a palace aide, a bomoh or witch doctor, a fisherman and a carpenter were arrested and jailed for the murder. No one was ever arrested or questioned for hiring them to kill her although suspicion fell on the prince's wife, Rajah Mahani, who had been publicly consulting witch doctors over her suspicion that Haslezah had put a spell on her husband.

In 2003, another attractive young woman, Norita Shamsudin, was found murdered in an apartment in a Kuala Lumpur suburb. A night club guest relations officer, Norita had been rumored to be having an affair with Shahidan Kassim, then chief minister of the state of Perlis. Although another individual was arrested and charged with the murder, he was later declared not guilty and no one else was ever charged. According to local news reports, the inspector general of police, Mohd Bakri Omar, classified the case under Malaysia's Official Secrets Act and no details were ever released.

Earlier this year, authorities finally completed an inquest into the 2007 death of beautiful ethnic Indian actress Sujatha Krishnan, who also worked part-time as a secretary to S.Vell Paari, chief executive officer of Maika Holdings and the son of S. Samy Vellu, the head of the Malaysian Indian Congress, a component of the ruling national coalition. Sujatha died in a hospital in a Kuala Lumpur suburb of Klang three days after she had been rushed in for treatment. Her body was cremated almost immediately after her death. The coroner ruled she had died after poisoning herself by drinking poison. The family vainly requested an investigation into her death.

For those at the bottom end of Malaysia's power spectrum, life can be considerably tougher if suspicion falls on them. According to the reform organization Malaysians Against Death Penalty and Torture (MADPET), a distressing number of suspects have died in custody. "Relying merely on data provided by the government, it has been disclosed that there have been 150 deaths from 1990 until 2004 (10.7 per year), 108 deaths between 2000 and 2006 (18 per year), and, 85 deaths between 2003 and 2007 (21.25 per year)," the organization said.

According to a 2003 report by the Asian Human Rights Commission – the same year Norita was killed ‑ statistics released in Malaysia's parliament in October of that year by the Home Ministry, showed 23 people died in police custody between 2002 and July 2003. Of those, 16 died in 2002 although according to the report, other figures indicated that 18 had died in custody in the first nine months of 2002 alone. Parliament was told in October 2002 that a total of 34 persons had died in police custody since 2000 ‑ six in 2000, 10 in 2001 and 18 from January to September 2002.

According to the report, then-Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung denied that methods of torture used to obtain information from suspects led to their deaths. He claimed that the majority of deaths were the result of attempts to escape from police custody. Typical seemed to be the case of Hasrizal Hamzah, who had been detained on suspicion of murder in October of 2003. According to a senior assistant police commissioner, Harizal confessed to the murder and then, as he was being moved to a new location, supposedly shoved the accompanying policeman aside despite being handcuffed, and leapt over a balcony to his death.

Earlier this year, the Indian community was enraged by the death of a 22-year-old named Kugan Ananthan who was detained on Jan. 15 on suspicion of stealing luxury cars. He reportedly collapsed during questioning and died on Jan. 20 from "acute pulmonary edema," or fluid in the lungs. However, after his body was released to his family, an autopsy found that he had suffered from internal bleeding in his heart, left lung, spleen, kidneys and scalp area. The soles of his feet had been beaten and the back of his neck and spine area were bleeding. His back was covered with contusions, beating marks and bruises. He had sustained more than 10 serious burn marks, probably as the result of being burned by a heated v-shaped iron bar. He had also been starved during the entire time he was being tortured, allegedly by as many as seven police officers, his family charged.

"There is a clear lack of supervision, medical care and concern for the general well-being and rights of suspects while under police remand," the Human Rights Commission said in its 2003 report. It does not appear that anything has changed. The odds are that the cases involving both Kugan and Teoh will end up the same way scores of others have.

You largely err. Whilst I might not have been a resident abroad, I have worked for a multinational company and traveled abroad. I also had a German boy friend at one point. I always admired how Westerners have a healthy dose of doubt about their politicians and generally disbelieve most of what they say. In contrast, we are fed information from a government controlled media (my Western friends always joked about the "Ministry of Truth" in Singapore) and not taught or encouraged to be skeptical about what we read and hear.

Malaysia is a bad country because it has a bad government. They will still try and run the country on the basis of Malay supremacy...like Hitler did and Soth Africa-Whie Supremacy. I will be very suprised that Obama ( from Slavery to President) would want to meet Najib who runs a racist policy.

Mahathir can buy a house and so can Meng Heng, Abraham and Muniandy but, Mahathir's house is an offer -costs him less than his other two Malaysian citizens. Mahathir has a specail discount because he is Muslim-but a Hindu, Christian, Jew or Buddhist is 2nd Class.

Why would the President of the United States see Najib-the only country in the world that incorporated racial discrimination in its constitution, commits educational genocide on its citizens, segregates children in school as in the USA ( 1960s) and supports corruption, nepotism and criminals. The USA must stand against RACIAL Discrimination!!!!!! More than 93,360 people areeeking citizenship after many years in Malaysia -but becausethey are Indians who were born in Malaysia, they are disallowed-but if they were Muslim,Corrupted -they can have hiogh positions in malaysia-TOYO ( Corrupted MB of Selangor)

UMNO is Illegal-True Power Comes From Moral Authority
written by Alladdin , October 30, 2009
I am unable to fathom the mindset of the majority of the Malay community who by the omission continue to refuse to speak up in view of all this evidence of wrongdoings on the part of UMNO. Their failure only shows their support/acquiescence for an organization such as UMNO. UMNO itself is an illegal organization and would have been rendered so if J Salleh Abbas not fired from his job. This the Malay community knows very well. I stand corrected but it would appear that the Malay community in supporting UMNO is willing to pay the price so long as they believe that UMNO is looking after Malay interest! Of course I am guessing-what other explanation can a right thinking person like me conclude? But one thing that I know is that there are many Malays and Zaid Ibrahim –just to name one among many other prominent Malays are very unhappy with UMNO and see this great injustice being carried with impunity as a travesty of justice to put it mildly.
It was stated that, “control of UMNO is tantamount to control of Malaysian politics.” This is rightly stated by a prominent newspaper. It is trite that UMNO runs the country, MCA is the Ali Baba arm that does all the business and MIC (now rendered impotent by UMNO-who is seeking to find another ignorant Indian party (Makkal Sakthi) to support their racist policies for another 50 years). So the story can continue. The main problem in Malaysia is corruption and it is rife from the top. Legislation has paralyzed Malaysia dissent to a point that there is no public participation in government. Participation is a closed shop-the elite and royalty run the show with many cronies. Much of the laws today are akin the Jim Crow laws of the USA in the 1960s.The Malay population may protest legally if in support of the government but the Indian, Chinese or Malay demanding for rights may be arrested and detained in limine without the legitimate expectation of a trial. Such is the state of Malaysia.
The law now says that Malays can’t drink alcohol but some Malays can-Megat Najamuddin had a bar called “Bacchus” in the 1980s in Kampong Pandan, behind the old Harrison and Crossfied Building. One needs to just walk to the Bars in Kuala Lumpur and notice daily dosages of alcohol being consumed by the Malay fraternity. A hypocrisy of sorts- The Minister of Home Affairs was seen in photographs happily consuming Anchor Beer with his wife-all over the web –all over the world!
My question is where is all this going. Christians are being persecuted by not allowing the use of the National Language in the Bibles, Hindus are being carried off from the mortuary and being buried as Muslims, there is no freedom of speech, religion, assembly-cheating in the elections, robbery, murder, corruption, nepotism-all signs that Malaysia is failing badly. The PM is still a suspect for murder. There is no more morality left in Malaysia which purports to be a Muslim country. Personally, I would prefer PAS to rule than a bunch of hypocrites. I need by asking a simple question-when are the Malays going to stand up for the truth?
I believe that Malaysians must fight the government peacefully, removing them and with a clean judiciary put them all on trial. I know many limbs may be lost if PAS takes over-but what the heck if you are innocent there is no fear!

History Is Still In A Flux~Asia Pacific May Be Subject To Great Upheaval
written by Ex Malaysian , October 30, 2009
Do read up on MM Lee Kuan Yew's most recent comment on the fast disappearing Chinese population in Malaysia:
http://www.temasekreview.com/2...malaysia/

Let us console our fellow Chinese compatriots in Malaysia : those of us who quit Malaysia for better pasture overseas will never ever forget our original land of birth. Rest assured that Malaysian Chinese diaspora will jump at any opportunity that may arise to render whatever & however little help that may be necessary in time of emergency in Malaysia to give these evil UMNO/Malay bastards a real bloody nose when the time comes. Some of our parents still in Malaysia even went as far as telling some of us in the S'pore Air Force to bomb the hell out of KL in time of war never mind that their loved ones may have to be sacrificed as unintended 'collateral damage'.

Do not despair. National boundaries change with time reacting to strategic & geopolitical changes. Malaysia is only a small & insignificant country & small nations' fates are always, unfortunately, decided by big players in the region. All may not have been lost yet. Just sit tight & watch how the whole geostrategic scheme of things play out with our ancestral China taking centre stage in this century. What is the weightage of Malaysia's approximately 10 million Malays compared to one Guangdong Province's 60 million or even with Indonesia's approximately 400 million Muslim Malays compared with China's 1300 million non Muslim Chinese.

We can see from the photo of the tragically bloodied backside of Mr. Teoh, probably due to being raped and sodomized before pushed and strangled; and all those horrifying murders, unresolved if committed by kings, policemen and politicians, especially of Malay/Muslim men - what has this Malaysia become? The collapse of the a cheap and suspectedly corruption-made bridge that caused three children to die unnecessarily, should also be classified as murder cases - imagine trying to blame the children instead; odes this has to do with them not being Muslims, I wonder?! And yet, the savage Dark-Age Arabic/Iranian Mullah's style Islamic religious police in Malaysia, are busy trapping, imprisoning, flogging an drehabilitating Muslims, who committed 'sins' within their private lives, including (what a joke!) on the way they dress and their sex lives, and shouting how great Islam is and how such Dark Age Muslims should go on ruling Malaysia and the world, including determining how Christians can name their God!

I used to be patriotic - but no more; now I wish the British had never left! Malaysia would have still remained civilized and dynamically multicultural, like Singapore, instead of being increasingly in the iron grip of savage Dark-Age Arabic/Iranian Mullah's style Islamic-ruling, whether by UMNO or PAS; where justice is non-existant - as if a joke, although with most tragic consequences!

I vote that the Chinese in Malaysia look to China to protect them more of less like those French-speakers of Canada. And why not? Not too long ago when China was weak, the Chinese in Malaysia did suffer a progrom in which those responsible never had the goolies to own up to. In 1998 when the Indonesians massacred and rape their Chinese, students and citizens rose up in China in protest. It need not stop there with the Chinese government making a couple of official statements about their 'concern' - today, China with its political and military strength can wade over or do an overland, come give the monkeys a good whack about their heads! Maybe even occupy Malaysia for a bit, she could do an Afghanistan or Iraq much like Western powers do albeit minus their failure.

That is, if China does not first think about twiddling its economic buttons on Malaysia, a mickey lame mouse country run by tree-swinging politicians with no economic savvy, absolutely as corrupt as they are primitive savages.

Malaysia killing its Citizens!
written by Rambo Abdullah , October 28, 2009
Well once the government which refuses to step down , makes every effort to stay in power starts killing its own citizens, then I think we better have a paradigm shift. As Anwar Ibrahim said recently ( and he is no angel) but anways...the United States, China and India should look carefully at "failing states"-dont wait for it to fail-make a concerted effort to pressure these governments to comply with human rights norms or alternatively expose them -make every effort to show where these politicians have stashed their monies ( ill gotten gains) or organize a regime change.

A country cannot start murdering its citizens! The Minister of Home Offairs is responcible-Is Torture as in Teioh's case -a crime where jurisdiction is universal-which means that Malaysian Ministers can be arrested for crimes against humanity by any court around the world?? I think there is a duty for other countries to protect Malaysain citizens!

Malaysians must not remain silent lest Evil Continues to Prevail
written by Biko , October 27, 2009
Not one Institution in Malaysia has credibility! That is frightening in a country that purports to be democratic.UMNO should be on the terrorism watch list as an organization that will through its actions raise Muslim Fundementalism. It supports bad institutions and allows impunity to reign. There have been so many deaths of Malaysians in Police custody-Kugan,Teoh, the Mongolian model and many more killed on the streets due to lack of security-thanks to a corrupted Police Force, Judiciary, Anti-Corruption and top corrupted leadesr in UMNO,MCA and the MIC.

Malaysian have no choice but to start a campaign to be rid of this government. We have in power a government that blantatently violates every HUMAN RIGHT norm.I hope Malaysians-Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and the real bumiputras-the indigenous population make every effort to campaign vigirously all over the world and internally over the web, to have peaceful demonstrations, call for Malaysian civil society to democratically and peacefully remove this government of MURDERERS! The fact that they continue to support criminal-Whie clooar crimes and others show that the Malaysian government is involved in misdeeds that require their removal.Truth must prevail for Evil to be demolished!

written by Reform , October 27, 2009
Let's hope PAS comes out with a resolution to hold an EGM or AGM this Wed 28 October, 09.

UMNO will do Malaysia further harm. They have no will or interest to make real fundamental change.

There will of course be consternation if PAS does that but if some decent UMNO people come out and leave their party to join PAS, it will be the most constructive effort to begin the reforms.

While you harasses and vilify Africa; countries trading under favorable terms are constantly overlooked whilst atrocities remain on the increase with impunity.
Malaysia has gone overboard yet China and North Korea alone is singled out merely because they are deemed as rivals in their own way unlike Malaysia Thailand and Singapore Kashmir “controlled” India Egypt Jordan and Israeli Occupation are either compliant or strategic relationships hence they operate torture and subsequent murder with UN and Geneva statutes ever mentioned.

Sods Law : Malaysia is an Islamic country and Islamic traditions are strongly against Sodomy.
As such Sodomy has to be ilustrated to give the strong effect. You can ask for further clarification from our Beloved ex Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir on the reasons why Sodomy has to be used to run down his Deputy Anwar Ibrahim.

This is a Malay issue and the Chinese or Indian are neutral on the Sodomy subject maybe their long history of civilisation has taught them ( Non Malay ) it is natural in animals, plants and people.
