Page 1 of 2 Party like it's 1949
For China's big 60th birthday party Thursday, Beijing enjoyed skies of blue flecked by wispy white clouds. Normally the city is bathed in a smoggy haze. It couldn't have been better if the government had arranged it itself. Except that it did. State media reported that the People's Liberation Army Air Force "conducted [China's] largest ever weather modification," sending up 18 aircraft to seed rain-bearing clouds with silver iodide and dry ice. Like the sunshine, nothing was left to chance. From the military parade in the morning to the Olympics-sized fireworks and song and dance extravaganza in the evening, everything was perfectly orchestrated. Tens of thousands of armed police in SWAT uniforms and soldiers – kitted with natty white gloves -- were deployed across the city to keep the peace. Another 800,000 security "volunteers" – read amiable pensioners -- in special "60 year anniversary" yellow shirts and red-armbands squatted on tiny foldaway stools. Ostensibly they were there to spot trouble but mostly they just sat and gossiped. The airport was closed for three hours and a big chunk of public transport was out of action. Kite flying was banned and pigeon owners were told to keep their birds locked up. It's my party and I'll shut the city if I want to. These rules rendered the center of Beijing into almost a ghost town, with the streets virtually empty of cars and roughly one in three shops and restaurants closed for the holiday. The night before the anniversary, I had flown back to Beijing. On the taxi ride home I passed Guijie, a popular street of Chinese hotpot restaurants which is usually a mad mess of cars and pedestrians jostling to eat. That night it was more or less deserted. "What's going on?" I asked the taxi driver. "It's National Day tomorrow. People are at home and watching television," he said gruffly. "Have they been told to or do they want to?" I asked. "They want to," he barked. "Now where do you want to be dropped off?" The next day felt like a holiday in Beijing – there were Chinese flags strung up on most doorways and fluttering from cars – but it wasn't exactly festive. At Tianyi Market, a popular shopping centre, stall holders had brought their laptops and were watching the footage online. They all said: "I'm excited (jidong)," and flashed a quick smile when I asked how they felt. But they didn't look excited. Jidong was a standard answer that everyone gave. CCTV – China's state broadcaster – had interviewed soldiers arriving in the city overnight and asked them the same question. One after the other said: "I'm excited." It was like a set phrase. At about 11am, around the corner from Tianyi on East Diananmen Street, about four blocks north of Tiananmen Square, the rumble of heavy vehicles could be heard. A shout went out and people poured out of shops and homes. The road was roped off with police tape and lined with soldiers and police. After a few minutes the first convoy of tanks went past. It was deafening. As tank after tank thundered by, people snapped pictures on their digital cameras or iphones. Girlfriends positioned themselves next to the security tape and smiled so their boyfriends could photograph them in front of the country's latest military hardware. People were watching in awe but no one waved flags or jumped in delight. One 63-year-old man dressed in a white shirt and jeans said the tank convoy was "very great," and it was a wonderful day. "I feel very proud," he said tapping his palm to his chest and grinning. "I was three when Mao founded China," he said. "I don't remember it but my older sister – she had just started middle school – she was there in Tiananmen Square with Mao."

Hahah! Lovely bunches of sweet army women, short skirts, jackboots, goose-stepping and all! Don't I just love it! China is dishing it out and I call that all in a grand fashion! Ain't it all prophetic beauty - just when them hapless Yanks, Brits and all those Nato-nites, some in their patched-up 'armour' and eBay kits are getting a ripe old rub in the nose, a skewered roasting by those naughty people in Afghanistan - having got nowhere in Iraq where they were only recently kebabbed by the ghosts of Saddam past! And just when they find no money left for the next superduper state of the art weaponry from the sad state of the State (and allies), China kicks up a big duststorm with dishy storm-trooper and all! What a timing! What a glorious 60th, I says! Many happy returns!

Here we have a hack writing for a half-baked site still using that old tone of 'righteous admonition' (long) ignored by the Mandarins of an imperial China in the making. Whether the heavy armour is made in the toy factories of Guangzhou or Shantou don't bother me none! Whether they would work against the might or might not of Yankland don't worry me none neither! What is delicious is what the West made of the greatest show of the year - a festivity of pies thrown in its face by yesterday 'sick man' now made good. Very good indeed. Very good in hard solid facts - all with dem gigantic wheels too! Beautiful colours too - computer-generated pixilated camouflage to match those beautiful uniforms of dem goose-stepping beauties! A jolly good show, I says! Many more to come - next year's models even better! All that those in envy can do is to get an unknown hack for an unknown site to write a few smears here and there. Det da most ya can do? No wonder the Talibananas are having a beached whale of a time riding roughshod over the sophisticated weaponry of the mighty West! Keep firing dem unmanned drones, they say, the accuracy is so great that they made more Talibanana enemies from those blasted wedding guests for dem White saviours than solve a perpectual problem for the West: should we send more troops in and further more troops as we itch to run away? I hear dem tink! "Hoho"(translated 'hoho' in Putonghua) I can hear those on the Tiananmen rostrum tink "Days not far when we can make special chop suey out of our erstwhile 'friends' ". Confucius he says "When Emperor wants enemies to perish, He first make them go crazy!". Here we we can see crazy in the form of a write-up of sort sprinkled here and there with unconcealed or uncongealed slags. That doesn't make the kind of brew that would make a Chinaman with probable militarist tendency bat a pingpong ball let alone an eyelid! Just see how, like the odd cheap jibes here and there by hacks and attempts at seizing the torch during the Olympic run ins cause the West its own seizures?! The Mandarins simply never gave any of these antics the monkey's brain! "Keep at it!" I can here them Maoist capitalists turn-colourfuls think "Bring 'em on!" So keep at it, I says too! In these days of glorious party written copies, a bit of deviancy in extinct journalism may even be interesting content for a spittoon! As for those on the Tiananmen I can hear them quietly roar as short skirts swagger and heavy armour roll past, "Watch carefully what we've got - plenty more where they come from!" More brilliant rockets as China rocks! And we know when the time comes they will make mincemeat or rather dimsum of the dim West. Watch this space, I says - if the CIA can still spend yesterday's 'world currency' on it! Come to think of it, before those on the Tiananmen rostrum would unleash those big lead-tainted toys on West, they probably would have stuffed the mightiest or mighthavebeen nation on earth with its own dollar! "Hahah!" (translated "Hahah" in Hunanese) I can hear old Mao say "Dinah is served!". report abuse

The goosestep blocks passing Tiananmen Square are not so flashy, with women soldiers too few and poorly dressed. The other advanced weapons could not open themselves for you to view, who can tell they are not fake? I hear there are many hired coolie behind the wheel of the trucks to push them in case of engine failure.

China was the favourite object of bullying and persecution by the West for many decades. Britain created opium addicts of Chinese so that they can be colonised. Now the Chinese have risen and the bullies now fear they will be kicked in the asses. Even now the West find everything wrong with China. No country is perfect. The West is in decline. Their morals are just rotten in the core. Their new god is MONEY - and they will do anything for it. Hence the mess the world is in now. It will be worse as the high priests of the MONEY GOD are still around and even in the US government. The old colonies will rise and overthrown their previous colonial masters. Every dog will have it's day. The day will come soon enough where Asia will lead the way.

China should be proud of its achievements. Despite all the obstacles thrown at it, from sanctions and trade barriers by the west, by internal secession attempts of Tibet and XInjiang, by bad press of western media, and from its own self inflicted wound of the cultural revolution, China managed to progress from a disastrous starving nation in 1949 to a dynamic fast developing nation of today.

No nation is perfect, and China is not perfect too. It has to allow its citizens more freedom, but yet be firm to maintain order. It has to balance economic development with preservation of the environment. There are certainly lots of challenges for China. But China has reached a stage where it can stand proudly as a nation free from foreign domination, able to defend itself, and contribute to world peace. report abuse

The occasional sparring between China and Taiwan is just nothing but a political show. Fact is that the status quo will remain, an ambiguous status that both can live with. The head of China will have to say whatever that needs saying that Taiwan is part of China. And the head of Taiwan will just need to say enough to imply that Taiwan is independent, without having to declare so outright. And then life goes on like two independent nations. It suits both nations, and it benefits both nations just to let the ambiguity remain. The important thing now is for both sides to develop a closer and peaceful relationship in trade and social exchanges. China will eventually evolve into a more democratic country as the country advance economically, socially and politically. The new generation of Chinese will eventually bring in the political and social changes. That is inevitable. The generation that had any reverance for Mao will all age and die away naturally. And the Taiwanese with any link to Chiang will also all pass away. When the baggages are all gone, hopefully it gets easier for the two sides to get closer. But I suppose the USA will constinue to quietly be a pain in the behind to keep instigating Taiwan to buy more arms to "protect" itself. It benefits the US profitable arms export, and also maintain its military presence next to China by making use of Taiwan. Shame on the USA.

China has made great progress in many areas. It may not have reached the level of many advanced nations, but the important thing is that it is on the right direction and making fast strides. Yes China may still have a lot of poor people, but the poverty level has dropped tremendously, and the percentage of middle income people have risen. The literacy rate has risen. Technology level has risen.

Many countries do not like to see this, especially many western countries and some of its rival neighbours. But they should adjust to this, and face the fact that China's development will continue to progress. At the end of World War 2, China was a big disaster. But look at it today. No one can honestly say that it has not made great progress. It may not be a fully free nation, but that too has seen continual progress. It is a complex nation, and a weak central government would result in a rapid disintegration of the nation. Sure there is widespread corruption. But even the developed countries have that, except that it is well hidden, and the criminals are more sophisticated. I am proud of the progress China has made, even though I am an oversea Chinese. I am proud for my many relatives back in China! report abuse

(AFP) – Taiwan on Thursday reacted to a call by Chinese President Hu Jintao to move towards reunification by stating that the island is an "independent sovereign state".
Votes: +8
"The Republic of China is an independent sovereign state, and it is a reality that the two sides do not belong to each other," the Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement, referring to Taiwan by its official name. But the council, the island's top China policy decision-making body, also called for setting aside disputes that have split Taiwan and the mainland for six decades. "Only that way can we develop relations permanently and lay a solid foundation," the council said. Hu pledged to "push forward the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait" amid a historic thaw between the two sides, which split at the end of a bloody civil war won by Mao's Communist forces in 1949. "We will continue to strive for the complete reunification of our motherland, which is the common aspiration of the Chinese nation," he said, as China celebrated 60 years of communist rule. Beijing still considers Taiwan part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary. On the island, immediate reunification is supported by only a minority, while most prefer a continuation of the status quo, in which Taiwan is an independent nation in all but name. report abuse

Asia Sentinel should change its name to CIA Sentinel. The articles published in this website has an obvious slant towards bashing China. Even though I am not a China national, but am a national of another country (but of Chinese descent), I can see the biasness in the articles quite clearly. Is this website financed by the CIA? Maybe. Most probably. The USA would like to see China disintegrate into several pieces, just like the breakup of the Soviet Union, so that it can remain as the sole superpower. USA always like to portray China as a threat to its neighbours. Yet history shows that the USA is a more violent country. It has a long history of invasion of other countries or outright sabotage and attempted assasinations of heads of state. Its powerful media portray all its rivals and enemies as the villains, and portray USA as the angelic world policeman. For example Iraq: While I am no fan of Saddam Hussein and his bloody cruel ways, yet the USA has killed much more Iraqis in a few short years compared to the entire rule of Saddam!! Not only that, the USA destroyed the entire infrastructure of Iraq! And made almost the entire Iraqi population poor and in despair, living under constant fear. And of course now it is leaving Iraq, destroyed and in hell. It bullied its small little neighbour Cuba for decades, and still doing so.

So the westerners should not come to preach to China about morals and human rights until the west has cleaned up their own act. China is not perfect and has lots of its own problems to resolve, but that is China's own problems, and not for the westerners to come to interfere. Just like they would not like to see China or others interfere in their countries. report abuse

This basically sums up Chinese attitudes towards the West : Chinese are never beholden to you evil guys, whether for praise or scorn. The West is just a mere sour-graped clown!

This lady called Dinah is jealous and disappointed to see China put on such a impressive show. What she would prefer to see would be China screwing up the celebration with a lot of chaos and rag tag displays, so that she could write tons of stories to pour scorn on China. She would have preferred to write about how things did not work at the show. Well she was disappointed to find that things were working to well. So she had to nit picked on small little things to criticize China. If she wants to see things crew up, maybe she should save her energy to see how Greece is going to screw up the Olympics games. The way things are going, she may see a lot of unfinished stadiums and transportation systems.

The westerners don't like to see the rise of China. They still want to behave like colonial masters talking down the Asians. Well, the white honky tonks have to get used to seeing China exert its rightful place in the world. Before they come to write bad things about China, they should go look in the mirror and see the lousy things in their own country first. Like how the white Aussies enslaved the original Australian inhabitants and took away their children (the lost generation). Like how the Europeans went to America and robbed and killed the natives, and put the rest in barren "reservation land". Like how the LAPD beat up the blacks. Like how they still hold on to their colonization of Hawaii, Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam, and many more. UK is still holding on to islands stolen from Argentina. And America is guilty of war crimes. They killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis by dropping bombs and missiles indiscriminately all over Iraq on a false charge that iraq had WMD. The real truth was that they wanted to control the oil, and to destroy Iraq's military capability, and of course also to allow the weapons manufacturers to get rid of old inventory and supply new ones. So the white honky tonks should not come to preach about morals until they have cleaned up their own backyard.

Ad hominem attack on journalist? Check. Avoid any mention of lock-down of Beijing in true Mao-style? Check. Ignore past 45 years of death, starvation, and all-round disastrous governance by the CCP? Check. Conveniently forget that the vast majority of Chinese live in grinding 3rd world poverty right now? Check. Threaten dire consequences for criticisng the s**t-hot perfection of the elite thugs that now rule? Check. So far so predictable, so far so amusing. No one is fooled though. Dinah Gardner, you sure tried your best to make our NAtional Day celebration sound like a funeral mourning. Come off it. The Chinese people are proud of China's achievement and we are proud of the grand celebration. Sure, motorists get disgruntled in any traffic jams, and sure taxi drivers would not be happy if there are no customers. But we can understand the need for traffic management in the preparation for the celebration and on the day itself. Your writing sounds like you are so desperate to look for faults in the National Celebration. You may disagree, but the tone of the writing shows through your inner feeling.
