India's Tawang Monastery is on terrain also claimed by China
See also: India, America: Looking Beyond the Nuclear Deal In early November, the Dalai Lama will visit the majestic Tawang Monastery, perched atop a ridge in the Indian province of Aranchul Pradesh. Surrounded by thick clouds and perennial mist, the monastery sometimes seems almost to be suspended from heaven. It is also at the very center of thousands of square kilometers of terrain claimed by both China and India, although India currently possesses it. It now risks becoming a proxy battleground on which both India and China seek to proclaim their sovereignty. The religious leader's visit can be seen as a card played by both India and the Tibetan exile community to keep pressure on China. Home to one of the most sacred Buddhist monasteries, Tawang is the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama, Tsayang Gyatso, in the 17th century. The current Dalai Lama passed through this region when he fled into exile in 1959. Chhime Chhoekyapa, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader's aide, told the media that the Dalai Lama is "going there for teaching. This has nothing to do with politics, there is nothing political about it." In Chinese eyes, however, and perhaps Indian eyes as well, everything the Dalai Lama does has something to do with politics. And this is a region that Beijing calls "Southern Tibet." When asked about the Dalai Lama's upcoming visit, Beijing officials have fumed. "China expresses strong concern about this information," said Jiang Yu, the spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry. "The visit further reveals the Dalai clique's anti-China and separatist essence. China's stance on the so-called Arunachal Pradesh is consistent. We firmly oppose Dalai visiting the so-called Arunachal Pradesh." Tension has slowly been ratcheting up between the two Asian giants, with media commentators fanning the flames. "Is China itching to wage war on India?" asked Professor Brahma Chellaney in the September issue of the Far Eastern Economic Review. Reports have appeared in Chinese state media alleging that India was moving troops and fighter aircraft to the northeast, specifically into Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. India, however, is acutely aware of its shortcomings in the territory it controls. The Chinese, with their extensive roads and railways, can actually come up to the Line of Actual Control, take a stroll and walk back. Two years ago, Chinese soldiers demolished a Buddhist statue that Indians had erected at Bumla, the main border pass above Tawang, according to a member of the Indian Parliament, Nabam Rebia. It takes several days for India's troops to get to the border. But slowly India is finding its voice as it struggles to speed up its own preparedness. China claims around 90,000 square kilometers of territory, roughly the size of Arunachal Pradesh, regarding the area as "disputed." China lays claim to Tawang on behalf of the Tibetans. But in the exile community in Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetan refugees live, the community is not impressed. They do not claim Tawang as Tibetan, let alone Chinese territory. The Dalai Lama's travel plans were announced a week after his recent visit to Taiwan to visit victims of tropical storm Morakot. China denounced the Taiwan trip, although its complaints were remarkably muted. The visit to Arunachal Pradesh has now drawn further attention to China's treatment of Tibetan activists and the Dalai Lama's calls for cultural and religious freedom and autonomy. Tawang became part of modern India when Tibetan leaders signed a treaty with British officials in 1914 that established the McMahon Line between Tibet and British-run India. Tawang fell south of the line. The treaty, the Simla Convention, is not recognized by China. "We recognize it because we agreed to it," said Samdhong Rinpoche, prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile. "If China agreed to it now, it would be a recognition of the power of the Tibetan government at that time." Tawang's native population is almost entirely Buddhist. Its origin is obscure. It was a part of the kingdom of Tibet in medieval times although local tribal rulers have governed it from time to time. The British declared the area off-limits in 1873. India's independence from Britain severed it from Tibet. In 1962 Chinese troops conquered Tawang during the invasion of Tibet and for six months it was controlled by the Chinese. After their retreat, Tawang again came under Indian control. India denied the Dalai Lama permission to visit Tawang the last time he requested to do so. This time it is playing the Dalai Lama card to the full. Officials in India's Ministry of External Affairs insist that "things are changing" and that India is getting more assertive. On Sept. 16, India's foreign minister, S.M. Krishna, rejected China's opposition to the visit. In an interview on IBN7, the sister channel of India's CNN-IBN, Krishna said China's objections had no merit. While the government has not explicitly said the visit will be permitted, Krishna said: "Arunachal Pradesh is a part of India and the Dalai Lama is free to go anywhere in India. The only question is that he is not expected to comment on political developments." Analysts say the Tibetan leader's visit will reassert Arunachal's status as an Indian territory. "The timing of his trip [to Arunachal Pradesh] is significant. It comes while the debate over his visit to Taiwan is still hot," said Bhaskar Roy, a New Delhi-based China analyst. "Tibetans are as good at playing these games as the Chinese. They know such a visit will keep up the pressure on China." In Dharamsala, Samdhong Rinpoche, Tibet's prime minister in exile, called Beijing's objections to the visit "absurd," adding that "Arunachal Pradesh and the Tawang region are an integral part of India. If the Dalai Lama, who has stayed in India for the last 50 years, is visiting any part of the country why does this bother China? If the Dalai Lama goes to Chinese territories it can raise objections but in this case has no business to interfere." The Arunachal Pradesh government is urging New Delhi to ignore the Chinese opposition. "Chinese claims over Arunachal Pradesh are simply baseless and not correct. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and would continue to be so," said Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. "They [the Chinese] are opposed to everything that His Holiness does," said a spokesman for the Dalai Lama's private office in Dharamsala. Tawang's strategic importance cannot be ruled out. The place provides the shortest route from Tibet into India. The Dalai Lama himself took this route to escape into India in 1959. Indian defense officials have already raised alarms declaring China and not Pakistan to be India's biggest threat. They believe that control over Sikkim and Arunchal Pradesh would enable Chinese forces to overrun the entire northeast border region. Chinese troops repeatedly have attempted to gain control of Sikkim's evocatively named Finger Area, a tiny but key strategic location where Beijing does not dispute the frontier. In June this year, General J J Singh, governor of Arunachal Pradesh and former chief of army staff, announced the deployment of two army divisions of around 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers each along the Arunachal Pradesh border with China. The strength of India's Sukhoi fighter jet fleet in the Northeast is being increased. It remains to be seen if the Dalai Lama's visit will be the trigger that causes them to be used. Best way to neutralize Dalai Lama
written by Ronaldo , September 30, 2009
What the Chinese government need to do is to supply the Dalai Lama with a life time's supply of Viagra ( or the cheap Chinese/Indian imitation version to cut cost), and a bunch of loose women paid to keep him happy. Then everybody will be happy. Dalai Lama will be happy working out. China will be happy since the old man has no time to create trouble in Tibet. Otherwise this old man is directing all his energy trotting around creating trouble for China.

Why the westerners like India and dislike China?
written by Frank of Seattle , September 27, 2009
Simple.
Votes: +1
Indians are like dogs. Westerners like dogs. Indians enjoy serving their masters, regardless who they are. Historically, when Indians were captured, after some obedience school training, Indians could be used to against their formal masters. Germans and Japanese used Indians against their formal masters English and Americans. English used Indians against their formal master Mongols. Mongols used Indians against their formal masters also. Indians are just like dogs. Indians always bark and attack those weak and poor. Indians only wiggle their tails at their masters who discipline them. The best way to deal with Indians is the same way to deal with those barking dogs. Stand up to them, carry a big stick. Try it to your Indian coworker, or a dog. You will see. It works. report abuse

How to resolve Tibet
written by Roberto , September 26, 2009
China should just stationed a few million troops in Tibet/XinJiang. And relocate a few hundred million Hans and their industries to Tibet/XinJiang. That should make Tibet/XinJiang 200% China territory permanently. China needs to learn from Israel. And all the trouble makers in Tibet should be deported to India, since they like Indians so much and the Indians love them so much.

Indians are always noisy
written by Singapore Ah Beng , September 26, 2009
Movemountain mentioned about the Indians making a lot of noise. Well, actually it is very true. If you don't believe it, just observe them. In a public place you can observe Indians chattering away loudly non-stop. In a bus,if one Indian sit in front of the bus, and his other Indian friend sit at the back of the bus, with lost of other passengers in between, these two Indians can still yak away non-stop. It is incredible. Just visit any Indian city, and you will be amazed at how much people can talk. That's why western companies hire Indians for their call centres. If an Indian answers your call at a call centre, he or she can talk until you have forgotten what your call was for!

Why the westerners like India and dislike China
written by Xiao Loong , September 26, 2009
The westerners like India and don't like China. Why? If you observe the Indians' behavior towards westerners, you can see the Indians treating the westerners like kings and queens. The Indians worship the whites. Where the whites gather, the Indians will flock there. They kiss and worship the land where the whites walk. Now when the westerners go to China, the Chinese refer to them as white devils (kwai loh) , red hair apes (ang mor kau), and all kind of names. And on top of that, the western countries forced China into the globalization game thinking they can beat China at that game. But the reverse happened. China beat the west in the globalization game. So the westerners have a resentment towards China. They see China catching up fast, and want to slow down China. As for India, if India ever get to tackle its own red tape and catch up on the global trade, eventually, the westerners will also turn against India. But for now they use India as a convenient tool to irritate China.

Never trust India
written by Gurkha , September 26, 2009
Just ask any of India's neighbours. India always renege on its promises. India always try to make a land grab, especially if the neighbours are small and weak. They are worse than double headed snakes. And now the Indians are making use of this pompous old man who self proclaim himself to be the god of the stupid tibetans. This pompous old man and his cronies treated the tibetans like slaves, took away the produce of the land from the peasants, and asked them to prostrate and lie face down to worship him. Yrah, he would like to go back to that life, doesn't he? In the west where he is exiled, he is treated like a silly old man, like a museum antiquity, an odd item used a research item by western socialogist studying the behavior of Asians.

China should just ignore that pompous old man
written by Jeet Lee , September 26, 2009
China should just change its game plan. Just ignore that old man, the self proclaimed god of the tibetans. If China continues the current mode of action, then China's enemies will continue to use the old man to instigate and irritate China. China should just treat the old man as a nobody, a no-news person, and completely ignore him so that he is no longer worth any news. If China keeps reacting to the old man's visit to any country, then the media will continue to give press coverage.

Republic of South and West Tibet
written by Dalai Lama , September 23, 2009
My Indian friends. Please accept my gift of permanent peace in your northern border.
Votes: -3
Let Tibetans create their own country at Ladakhi (West Tibet), Sherpas, Bhotia, Lepcha, Arunachal Pradesh (South Tibet), and Sikhim. There would be no territory disputes between the India and China. There would be no disputes between Dalai Lama and China. I am sure China will be happy to guarantee the safety of this newly create country called Republic of South and West Tibet. Tibetans will have their own long dreamed country. India will have a large security buffer zone in the north and will not have to worry about the North front. Stationing large amount of troops to these areas with poor roads will cost Indians a lot of money than the tax collected from these areas. These Tibetan areas are liabilities to India than benefit. By giving back Tibetans what were theirs, India traded its liability for permanent security at its northern border. That is the best peace deal for everybody. report abuse

Empty Vessels Make Most Noise
written by Movemountain , September 23, 2009
We have seen so much sabre rattlings from our good-old Indian friends while there is hardly a whisper from the Chinese side. May be it is simply a manifestation of Chinese national characteristics as opposed to an Indian one. Or, may be India is so way behind compared to China in so many respects that it has somehow allowed its extreme paranoia to gain an unwelcomed upper hand in its national psyche as manifested in its weird/irrational behaviour lately. Must we remind our Indian friends that by staying low-key does not necessarily mean that one may have felt outclassed in military superiority/advantage. Quite on the contrary, It may have been that one is so much well prepared that one oozes with confidence to deal with any untowards incidents. Just see who blinks first in this high stake gamesmanship & more importantly, who shall emerge winner in any unfortunate outbreak of hostility.
Votes: +4
Of course, there shall have been no winner should such an unfortunate conflict occur~Asia will be the ultimate loser as this will delay or derail the advent of the much anticipated Asian Century. The US & its cohorts the Western countries will probably be so excited that they may just be laughing to the banks for having created an unexpected windfall by selling weapons to these poor Asians busy killing each other. The Russians will probably feel the same too for the same reason. Let the truth be told that the last time when China won the border war but still have to withdraw was because it lacked logistical support to maintain its teneous hold. This state of affairs is now history this time around for the infrastructural outlays may have been largely in place by now. In addition to what had already been done, another strategic fast railway track from Sichuan to Llasa may start its construction either later this year or early next year which will see travelling time reduced drastically from 56 to 8 hours from central China to Llasa. Nobody truly believes that this is merely a tourist-class passenger line but military-civilian dual-use track. Tibet will forever be knitted tightly with the eastern seaboard & Tibetan exiles will now bid their farewell once & for all to their pipe-dreamed of an independent homeland & will henceforth have to settle permanently in Dharamsala & become Indian citizens. China may not have wished for an unwanted conflict but it will never shy away from it much less from an Indian state. report abuse

"When China invaded Tibet using military force in 1949, Tibetan culture was flourishing. China's Chairman Mao Tse Tung set out to bring Tibet into the Communist fold and thereafter destroyed thousands of monasteries, killed over a million Tibetans, and began repopulating Tibet with Han Chinese. As a highly developed esoteric and classical culture, more efficiently equipped with monastics and scholars than soldiers, the Tibetans were hard pressed to fight off Chinese aggressors. Their eventual defeat marked the end of Tibet's sovereignty as a nation, and it was renamed by China as the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Votes: +1
In the 1960's, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution inside Tibet, culture was considered one of the "three poisons." Chinese Communist policy was to destroy what remained of Tibetan culture before the Chinese invasion, and to replace it with Communist propaganda. The function of music under Mao's rule was to align Tibetan mentality with the Communist ideology, and remove the traces within the Tibetan mind of their old way of life. Many Tibetans were killed or punished for practicing Tibetan music during this time. During the chaos and the imminent threat, the current 14th Dalai Lama, fled to India in 1959, where he has been the head of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile ever since. Thousands of Tibetans have escaped Tibet and followed Him into exile. Those living inside Tibet today have no real leader inside their own country, and no real freedom; and the incredibly rich and historical culture of Tibet is disappearing before our very eyes. Now, with nomads being displaced by force into the cities, the completion of a railway between Tibet and China, and the subsequent influx of numerous Chinese settlers and shopkeepers, the tradition is disappearing ever more rapidly." report abuse

Apart from the pilgrimage center the place is also surrounded by beautiful scenic beauty, land scape, snow coverage and passes. Tawang is located in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh bordering west to Bhutan and south to Assam.
One can see the rich local culture during the festival and their festival is called Losar which comes in the month of Feb. to march.
Nearest station to reach Tawang is from Tezpur, transportation is available all 24 hours. One can hire a taxi and it takes 11 hours to reach Tawang. Where to stay would be the next immediate question in your mind. Yes, there are hotels and tourists lodge where you can find to stay comfortably.
