A respected investment bank picks a controversial keynote speaker
Former US Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who is viewed with equal fervor as an ignorant fool or the voice of the common man by those who either loathe or love her, is coming to Hong Kong to seek international street cred. Palin, who suddenly quit her job on July 26 as Alaska's governor, is scheduled to give her first major international overseas address as the keynote speaker at the 16th annual CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets Investors forum from September 21 to 25. The decision to bring in Palin as keynote speaker has been met with incredulity from many among the business community in Hong Kong, asking if it might not be a hoax. Asked if the email announcing Palin's appearance might indeed be a hoax, Simone Wheeler, head of communications for the investment bank, responded: "No, not a joke at all. The CLSA Investors' Forum has traditionally been a platform for firsts into Asia: Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Alan Greenspan. As an independent investment house, we aim to provide speakers of note." Palin was roundly mocked during the presidential campaign as US Sen. John McCain's running mate for saying she was experienced in foreign relations because she could see Russia from her northern outpost across the Bering Strait. For that remark, US Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican and presumably an ally in last year's election, said "She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials. You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything." Hagel said the campaign should "be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia. That kind of thing is insulting to the American people." Palin is a galvanic speaker whose first appearance on a national stage in the United States – at the Republican National Convention in September 2008 – catapulted her into the spotlight. Unscripted, however, she has been a disaster. Her first major interview with the national press – with CBS News' anchor Katie Couric – was such a catastrophe that the McCain campaign largely kept her away from reporters from until the end of the campaign. Indeed, the CLSA speech will be off-limits to the press although, Wheeler said, there might be an opportunity for a press conference. "Honestly? This isn't a hoax?" asked the managing director of a Hong Kong business chain. "It's entertaining perhaps, in a road accident sort of way! Now I've seen everything." Palin has never been noted to have much expertise in economics or finance. Said an independent investor: "Sarah Palin is a real expert on money-making. I wonder if it will be her (to arrive in Hong Kong) or Tina Fey," a reference to a devastating send-up of Palin by the comedienne Fey on Saturday Night Live, an American comedy show. Several reasons have been given for the arch-conservative self-described hockey mom's precipitous departure from Alaskan politics, ranging from scandal fatigue to – much more likely – a desire to play on a bigger stage than the isolated northernmost US state in preparation for a run at the US Presidency in 2012 Her trip to Hong Kong is an obvious first attempt to begin to build foreign policy and international credentials. Nonetheless, her selection as speaker for the CLSA convention had Hong Kong's investment community scratching their heads although one independent broker said the selection was "a good idea. It will guarantee a wide attendance." Another investor, however, called it "typical of CLSA's decline since the death of Gary Coull," CLSA's co-founder, who died in 2006. "Or it might be a way of way of ingratiating with Beijing by making America look ridiculous," he fumed. CLSA has become a powerhouse in Asia for its offbeat approach to investing, for instance publishing a whimsical annual feng-shui prediction report on the regional markets over the coming year. Annual forums have included mid-week parties with ageing pop stars and sessions with such political stars as Clinton, Gore and Greenspan. However, it was the quality of research that made CLSA what it is. Founded by two former journalists – Coull and Jim Walker – it has consistently been ranked first in Bloomberg's most accurate Asian research poll and the Thomson Extel Asia Pacific Survey, among others. I'm sane and I don't think Palin's dumb at all. In fact, when I see a state budget just a little in the red and drawing from a large surplus trust fund and SMALLER in dollars than when she became governor 2 years ago, I wonder where people who disparage her live. California, with 13% unemployment and a 25+billion deficit? New York, pretty much ditto. Ohio? You get the picture. Oh, and I'm not sure I've seen a president having to flail away in reply to FACEBOOK messages and getting stopped in his tracks on his pet project. But then, those "loyal opposition" messages came from a person who's dumb, right? GET REAL! She is one of the foremost advocates for domestic energy policy. And she had to command a military unit in Alaska manning the missile defense with Guard units. She received daily security briefings for her area of responsibility, and she was a state governor. And she runs her own businesses with her husband. And she's a winner with the attitude of a winner. Go ahead and mock her. She and I know the best opportunities come when your opponent underestimates you.

Palin Is a Big Joke

Is Sarah Palin still in hiding, perfecting her Yukon comedy act for the CLSA conference in Hong Kong this month?

But seriously, bless Rupert Murdoch’s heart. Sarah Palin is locked away, as her handlers try to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Hope they can get the job done in time. What some people won’t do for money. Hint: If you think I'm kidding, just ask her unscripted questions about economics. There is a reason why she does not grant interviews. She is not very smart. She can only parrot speeches that someone else writes for her. She does not represent the intelligent women of the United States. report abuse

Condescending Liberal Snobs
written by Datou , September 07, 2009
I find all you Palin haters highly amusing. Here is a politician who in less than one term as governor, tossed out a cabal of corrupt REPUBLICAN politicians, negotiated a massive pipeline deal with Canada that had been stuck for years because of said politicians wanting their piece of the action, and enjoyed plus 60% favorable polling even after the elitist snobs in the mainstream media went after her like a pack of rabid dogs.

Planeloads of DC lawyers went sniffing through Palin's trash to find incriminating evidence of any kind. Meanwhile Obama gets a free pass all the way to the Presidency. No voting records, no academic records from Columbia or Harvard, and of course no long-form birth certificate. No mention of his decades-long association with race-baiting America-hating preachers, admitted terrorists, socialist agitators and convicted crime figures in Chicago. Do all you brilliant minds still think that Joe Biden makes a better VP than Palin? Joe Biden, who just the other day said that the stimulus was working better than expected? I thoroughly enjoy watching you all foam at the mouth whenever her name is mentioned. It proves your fear of her. What I don't understand is that Palin believes in limited government, low taxes, and free markets. I would think anyone in Hong Kong appreciates that (unless your a civil servant of course). Have fun. I hope your heads all explode when she's here. report abuse

Palin is dumb. No sane person will question this. It is sad but telling that this doesn't qualify her for a high-profile political career in the USA (or somewhere else...for that matter) but it is actually shocking that a private investment bank is unprofessional enough to use/exploit this dumbnuts' celebrity factor for a keynote speech. In Asia! She probably doesn't even know who the president of Asia is...

"Palin never said she could see Alaska from her house. Tina Fey said that to mock her and now it has become an urban legend." Your statement is completely false and originates from cheap conservative propaganda. The beauty of Tina Fey's parody is that she didn't have to make up anything to make Palin look utterly ridiculous. Yes, Palin actually said those words, as another poster already explained in an earlier comment and even provided a reliable citation. Worst choice of speaker ever. I love how the head of communications for the group had the courage to rattle off names like Clinton, Greenspan, etc. in defence of their speaker choice. High achievers with qualifications on one side, and ... Palin on the other. CLSA you are a laughing stock! report abuse

Palin's entire Governorship in Alaska was nothing but a giant "Hoax". She got elected by divisiveness, winking, and telling everyone that they were "making things up" about her. If only Alaskans had known the truth back then. Now she has enlisted Glen Beck to continue to "stir things up in America".

Go ahead and read her self-made up accomplishments and her fluffed up resume. Then read all of the self-proclaimed accomplishments she is taking from others. Palin said in the ABC interview with Charlie Gibson: Let me speak specifically about a credential that I do bring to this table, Charlie, and that's with the energy independence that I've been working on for these years as the governor of this state that produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy. FactCheck.org notes that this is "simply untrue." Instead of "nearly 20 percent," try "under 3 percent." On Sept. 14, Palin corrected that to: "My job has been to oversee nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of oil and gas." In fact, as the Washington Post notes, "according to authoritative EIA [Energy Information Administration] data, Alaska accounted for just 7.4 percent of total U.S. oil and gas production in 2005." The Post gives her its highest (which is to say lowest) rating of "Four Pinocchios" for "continuing to peddle bogus statistics three days after the original error was pointed out by independent fact-checkers." report abuse

I have just heard that one of your upcoming speakers is supposed to be Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska, who quit her job about halfway through her first term, because she was totally incompetent and unethical. I don't know what the qualifications are for becoming a speaker in front of your group, but if Sarah Palin qualifies, it does not give me very much confidence in your investment group. There are so many way more qualified people - even women, if that is what you want/need. Sarah Palin, however, is one of the least qualified ones! She is NOT a Global Leader, and you besmirch the names of those distinguished guests you had before her. She QUIT her job as Governor half ways through her first term. She has not been out of the country except for one brief stint last year to Kuwait, and another brief one this year to Kosovo - both times onto American military installations. Again: I cannot believe this was well thought-out speaking engagement on your part, and I will follow your group closely to see what you do - this appointment of yours does not instill much confidence in me. report abuse

CLSA must have money to burn
written by DianeM , August 31, 2009
If this is true, and I have my doubts, it would appear that CLSA people earn far too much money as they have a desire to burn it. If it is for a photo-op with her, then prepare yourself for people to withdraw any funds they have with your institutions as they will see you as incompetent.

There is no quick course to take for understanding "word salads". This is Palin's speech delivery. Rarely is there anything that comes out of her mouth that is truthful. She is not representative of the majority of people in the U.S. and more so women. Professional, intelligent women have no idea why people want to listen to her as she has no ability to speak in coherent sentences. Women see it as men wanting to see her only because their brains are not in their heads -- well, the correct head so must be thinking with their other "head". Her college degree may as well have been bought off the web as it took 5 colleges in 6 years to get her journalism degree. Intelligence is not high on her list of qualities. As she will no doubt be dragging her family along at the expense of CLSA, make sure anything of value is put away. Her family is not well behaved and actually would probably pack it to take it home. The only reason I like to follow her is to have my daily dose of comic relief. If won't be much longer before Palin is a has been as there won't be many booking her for speeches. Happy to see you have so much money to waste as that's what it will be. report abuse

I would imagine parameters would be set. If there are questions, they would have to be predetermined so that she can rehearse the answers. She does not represent the women of America, and her appearance certainly discredits the event. I guess she is crazy enough to think that if she gives a speech written for her that it will help develop her foreign policy experience??????????? What an embarrassment.

For that amount of money, I hope they're savvy enough to set the parameters for her appearance -- namely that she should agree to be interviewed, that she should have a Q&A session post-speech, and she should show up on time. They should NOT allow Palin to set any parameters -- such as limiting her interviewers to those SHE chooses, or pre-selecting questions to be asked. she's been "enabled" in this manner before, making such exercises worthless. report abuse
