ImageMalaysia's leading ethnic party names a scandal-ridden party hack as its head and the country's leader

On Friday, Malaysia is scheduled to end months of waiting to announce its new prime minister, Najib Tun Razak, after the United Malays National Organisation, the country's biggest ethnic party named him their leader during their annual convention.

Najib told the UMNO parley, held in Kuala Lumpur last week, that it is crucial that his party reform itself or it will lose its hold on the electorate. But Najib's history, and that of the party itself, portends instead a return to the politics and practices that got the national ruling coalition into trouble in the first place, losing its historic two-thirds majority in the national parliament in national elections last year. Najib's ascent to power more likely represents a clear preference by UMNO stalwarts to return to cronyism, money politics and corruption after an eight-year interregnum from the authoritarian reign of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

The new prime minister's history may make it problematical whether the leaders of major countries are going to want to be seen with him. Concerns include hundreds of millions of dollars in questionable contracts steered to UMNO cronies and friends, not to mention continuing allegations of his involvement in the murder of the Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu following the controversial purchase of French submarines and, more recently, his role in sabotaging the opposition in the state of Perak and his shuttering newspapers and thwarting opposition candidates during his own party's elections last week.

The convention itself was a good example. Opponents of the Najib team were denied places on the ballot by a panel supposedly charged with cleaning up money politics, although they let Najib's allies slide by after having committed the same offenses. The result was that the deputy president, Muhyiddin Yassin, and all three vice presidents are from the Najib faction although the Najib forces were unable to prevent Khairy Jamaluddin, the son-in-law of ousted Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmand Badawi, from becoming head of the important UMNO Youth wing. They also were unable to stop Shahrizat Abdul Jalil from defeating longtime party hack Rafidah Aziz to take over the Wanita, the women's wing of the party, also a Badawi ally.

The final election night erupted into name-calling, with allies of Mukhriz Mahathir, the son of the former prime minister, charging that Khairy had bought the votes to make him head of UMNO Youth. Mahathir Mohamad himself railed against the two candidates against his son, calling them corrupt. Rais Yatim, the foreign minister, who lost out in one of the vice president races, demanded that UMNO's disciplinary board investigate the entire new supreme council over allegations that they had delivered gifts and money to delegates in the effort to win their seats. Mahathir Mohamad has repeatedly launched furious attacks on UMNO leaders, calling them corrupt although he showed up at the last night of the convention to be seen with Najib and others.

The UMNO-owned New Straits Times described the top party positions as having "given much-needed breathing space to Najib as he sets out to unite UMNO and push the party to undertake the reforms he has promised. He will have less of a task to deal with the factionalism that so often arises after a bitterly fought contest in the party." But in fact, UMNO appears to be as much riven by factional politics as it was going into the convention.

As early as April 8, the party faces the first of three important by-elections – one for a seat in the Dewan Rakyat, or national assembly, and two more for state legislative seats. The first test is for a Perak seat in which support for the Barisan appears to be waning.

"The problem is not the opposition, but within our own ranks," a local leader told the Kuala Lumpur-based website Malaysia Insider, referring to the perennial problem of factionalism within Umno.

Najib has sought to nullify the opposition with force. Last Monday, a rally led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim was broken up by police who fired tear gas at the audience. Other rallies have been cancelled as well. Two opposition newspapers were cancelled until after April 8, the date of the Perak national by-election, presumably because the two papers have hammered away at allegations of Najib's connections with the two men on trial for killing Altantuya in October of 2006 and her role in the €1 billion purchase of French submarines that netted one of his closest friends €114 million in "commissions."

To say Najib brings considerable baggage with him is an understatement. While attention has focused on allegations of corruption in the submarine purchases, the fact is that as defense minister from 1999 to 2008, Najib presided over a cornucopia of defense deals that poured a river of money into the coffers of his close friends and UMNO cronies. A September 24, 2007 story in Asia Sentinel quoted Foreign Policy in Focus, a think tank supported by the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, as saying that "many foreign arms manufacturers generally used well-connected Malaysians as their lobbyists for contracts."

Three contracts approved under Najib have been widely cited by the opposition and fit well into Foreign in Policy in Focus's patronage scale. They have been forced back into public attention by his ascension to the premiership and by the exoneration under questionable circumstances of Abdul Razak Baginda, one of his closest friends, for Altantuya's murder.

Spending for defense accelerated across the board after Najib, called "the driving force" behind Malaysia's military modernization program by Foreign Policy in Focus. The shopping list, the think tank reported, "includes battle tanks from Poland, Russian and British surface-to-air missiles and mobile military bridges, Austrian Steyr assault rifles and Pakistani anti-tank missiles. Kuala Lumpur was also negotiating to buy several F/A 18s, the three French submarines and Russian Suhkoi Su-30 fighter aircraft.

Foreign Talents
written by Mujibur , April 07, 2009
Recently the country who was built up by the foreign talents from Bangladesh has summarily cancelled the work permits of the Banglas leaving thousands in debts and despairs. Unfortunately Najib is less enlightened about the plights of foreigners. It will not be surprising that the country will face a new wave of crimes in the coming weeks and months.

Beheaders
written by Mamakthir , April 07, 2009
In addition to cronyism, we now have beheaders in UMNO. Recently the battle cry for the by-election was to behead the enemies because our policy of bullying and offering tit-bits to its other racialist component parties are coming apart. Hindraf has effectively decimated the crony Indian MIC. It looks like the crony Chinese MCA is going the way of dinosaur. Now it seems that the only effective policy left is to offer 20 million ringgits for each opposition to crossover

the future of justice in Malaysia
written by muja , April 05, 2009
dear readers who concern about the political issue in Malaysia, as we know Najib had already become the prime minister together with all the unsettled issue in the court which portray the image of justice system in Malaysia altantuya, submarine royalties, bribe and all other issue.. the release of the 13 is indeed good news for the detainees and their family members but we must be aware that the release is a political collateral to project a concerned PM. Now there are 27 more detainees still being detained in Kamunting Detention Camp without trial. The best act of sincerity and honesty based on true principles of justice is to release all ISA detainees, not just some of them. The bravest act is to place justice where it should be. ISA permits detention without trial and outraging wide powers. It was not just abused but it is an abused bad law. ISA must be abolished and its victims are released or put on trial.

What the real Problem for Malaysia is in the 21st C.
written by Webber , April 04, 2009
As a Malaysian I find it very difficult to reconcile the fact that I have to have and accept a leader of my country who is implicated in corruption and perhaps complicit in a murder!! Its very very hard to think that such a leader and WHOEVER he picks in his new cabinet would do good thing for this country.I forsee more drastic action to stifle the Universal Declarations Of Human Rights. This will be don because the new PM does not want anything in the open.

How can we move forward in the 21st Century.Even Lee Kuan Yew with a had to take the witness stand in a biased court and was subject to cross-examination when he sued the opposition member for defamation.Tengku Razaleigh also filed his suit when wrongly accused. But looks like Najib Tun Razak, like his BOSS-Mahathir feel that they need not comply with the Rule of Law and have disqualified themselves of the civil suit of defamation but hide behind the ISA,Criminal Sedition etc brought by the Attorney General-a pariah of the government of malaysia.

It is pointless pretending to say that you are democractic on the one hand, say that you are following the civilised practices of OECD and the USA, and then behave like every other dictator in Africa and parts of Asia. Does the Malaysian government actually think that the Malaysian people are ignorant of what is going on-daily millions of chats travel all over the world witha a view to bring transparency to the public.

The road that the government of Malaysia is taking is one of failure. In history, every oppressing government has collapsed. Is this the legacy that BN is going to leave behind, if the answer is NO-How is the BN going to become CLEAN,EFFICIENT and ABIDE with the Rule Of Law-when matters like the muder and corruption not dealt with at the top!???

The Malaysian worker has paid the ultimate price for all this big spending projects. Malaysian wages are stuck in a time warp. Even if you make a simple calculation cost of living in this country has gone up by a minimum of ten times i.e 1000% since 1960. But our wages have at best gone up by 3 to 4 times for middle and lower income groups and 5 to 6 times for those at the top. Members of parliament, however, have been able to keep up with inflation. An MP drew RM500.00 in 1960 and today he gets RM5,000. A newly appointed clerk had a take home pay of RM280 to RM 300 during the same period and today he take home just under RM1000.00.
Malayssia continues with low wage policy and is using foreign workers to keep wages down. This has benifitted the economy and certain people who are involved in the trade of workers. And this policy is difficult to comprehend because yearly 450,000 to 500,000 students leave our schools and about 60,000 go on to pre university classes. What happens to the rest.Well parents are they to subsidise wages.

We have been able to justify low wages because the wealth from our most important natural resource, oil and gas, has been kept by law out of the National Budget which only registers Royalty Payments.

I hope that our new Prime Minister will make efforts to redress this very important shotcoming. Democracy, capitialist system dictates that money must be put into hands of the people in exchange for productive work thereby giving them the power to spend. Here I must draw the attention of the PM that based on the current house prices many of us will not qualify for housing loans as we are no where near the 25 to 30 percent of income per month benchmark that could go for housing. And when you add schooling and transport it is a struggle for most of us
Good Luck Mr. Prime Minister.

Will you be cleansed of your sins? The citizens who bring to light your thefts are the ones who can be called loyal citizens. 90% of the tax is being paid by others and you are enjoying the tax payers money from cradle to grave.

I can't imagine what the scenario in this Bolehland if 90% tax payers were to leave this country!

UMNO represents a Culture of Corruption. Probably Old Mariner is one of them
written by Corrupted Old Mariner , April 02, 2009
The issue of corruption is real in Malaysia and committed more by Malay UMNO members with complete disregard to the poor Malay,Chinese and Indian. What more proof does the Malay want? Look at Toyo! That is why the Malay population is fed up with UMNO-a dishonest society and prefer PAS or Keadilan.

Old Mariner is the classic case of the conman who is caught with his pants down.Noone is critical about the Malays, their Royaly or Islam-what normal Malaysian are angry with is that people like Toyo and you using the name of patriosm are trying to con everone making the issue racial and religios when its not-Its corruption.
I suppose people like Old Mariner must have made a lot of money through ill gotten contracts and supports people like Toyo and Mahumad Taib-when they are arrested for rape or theft they will come to court with a Haji cap like Old Mariner! Shameless man!

RM1.7 million spent by Khir Toyo's entourage on Disneyland trip
By Mazlinda Mahmood

2009/04/01

A Selangor Government subsidiary spent about RM1.7 million for the former Selangor menteri besar’s trip to Disneyland Paris and Disney World in Florida. Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo went on the visits with his wife, three children, and other officials. His maid is also believed to have followed them on the trips. This was revealed on the final day of the Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency hearing into the financial affairs of Selangor Elected Representatives Wives Welfare Association (Balkis).

Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd chief executive officer Datin Khairiyah Abu Hassan said RM420,000 was spent on a “technical visit” to Morocco and Disneyland Paris from Dec 17 to 24, 2004.

Dr Khir, the former PNSB chairman, also spent four days in transit in Dubai which cost the firm another RM10,000 for his accommodation.

Khairiyah said PNSB also paid RM366,000 for an advance team trip which surveyed the places before Dr Khir’s delegation went to Morocco and Disneyland Paris.

Khairiyah, who looked resigned by the questioning by Selcat chairman Teng Chang Khim, said the Morocco trip was to learn about architecture and Islamic building design and Moorish art.

She said the Disneyland visit was to gain technical knowledge to develop a similar theme park in Bagan Lalang, Sepang.

For the 10-day “technical trip” to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and a visit to Honolulu, PNSB spent almost RM750,000 including US$30,000 (RM110,000 at that time) in cash for transportation and meals. Of the total, RM110,000 was for Dr Khir’s presidential suite.

Khairiyah said the group did not meet with the Disneyland management team during both visits, but bought tickets and hired a tour guide.

“You cannot gain technical knowledge from a tourist guide. Both look more like leisure trips as the dates were in December,” Teng said.

Dr Khir also went on a working visit to Jakarta and Jogjakarta from April 20 to 24, 2003, costing PNSB RM38,000, including for first class tickets for Dr Khir, Zaharah and their daughter, an economy class ticket for their maid and three nights accommodation in a presidential suite.

PNSB forked out almost RM9,000 for the maid alone.

Khairiyah said the trip was to learn about the batik industry as PNSB had been appointed to lead Selangor’s batik industry. Dr Khir travelled in a hired Mercedes Benz limousine costing RM2,900 daily.

PNSB also paid RM1,200 for traditional dancers during the welcoming ceremony. “So we welcomed ourselves?” Teng asked.

Meanwhile, Teng said Dr Khir and his wife Datin Seri Zaharah Kechik have lost the chance to explain to the public what actually happened in a state agency and Balkis by not turning up for the Selcat hearing.

Selcat, he said, will hold a meeting to discuss the testimonies and scrutinise all documents submitted during the hearing. “Then we will prepare a report to be tabled before the next sitting of the assembly in July,” he said.

Commenting on state Registrar of Societies (ROS) deputy registrar Mohd Yunus Jamil’s failure to submit a copy of the notice for a meeting to dissolve Balkis, Teng said ROS should be more cooperative.

“Since they refused to produce the documents for which any member of the public is entitled to, we have no option but to invoke Section 114 of the Evidence Act 1950 which is adverse presumption against ROS.

Section 114 states that it is presumed that facts or documents are unfavourable to the person who holds it when it needs to be produced but was not.

“In this case, the notice for a meeting to dissolve Balkis was alleged to have been sent and filed with ROS,” he said. “The fact that they refused to produce it when they could be produced means that the documents may be unfavourable to them,” he said.

the s**t of umno youth celaka
written by A concerned Malaysian , April 01, 2009
THE FOLLOWINGS ARE TYPICAL JOB OF UMNO CRONIES AND ARE IN MOST GOVENMENT AGENCIES

The three Bangladeshi workers sat morosely at the mamak restaurant, sipping their teh-o.

They had just gone to a travel agent and been told that they would have to pay RM2,000 to return home.

The news had deflated the men -- all of whom had overstayed in Malaysia. They were shocked to learn it would cost that much to leave the country.

Early last month, Immigration Department director-general Datuk Mahmood Adam had announced that overstayers could leave the country by paying a nominal compound of RM300, plus another RM100 for a special exit pass. But they are now told that they would need to pay RM1,300 as processing fee.

"Many of us want to go home, but we can't afford to pay such a large sum," said one of the workers, who identified himself as Majibur.

The KLIA Immigration office told the New Straits Times that all "processing" could only be done through a company called Gerbang Majuindah.

The officer handling the phone call seemed bemused why a private company was doing the job of the Immigration Department.

"We are surprised why the foreign workers can't do it directly with us," he said.

"Whenever they come to us, we send them to Gerbang Majuindah."

Gerbang Majuindah was registered in November 2007 as a general trading company.

Located at the Pandan Indah Commercial Park, it has two directors, Mohamadu Sathikul Amin Mohamed Ismail and Zakir Hussain Abdul Caffor.

The company has a share capital of RM1,000,000, divided between the two directors, with Zakir holding 69 per cent and Sathikul 29 per cent, while two others have a share each.

Zakir said the project was awarded by the Home Ministry to his "boss", Mohd Mustapha AK Ismail, through the latter's company, Pangkal Rezeki Sdn Bhd.

He added that the minimum "processing" fee was RM900 and insisted that overstayers who went through his company did not have to go through the regular Immigration procedures. He blamed travel agents for hiking the fee up to RM1,600.

Pangkal Rezeki's nature of business is registered as "exporters' investments". The main men behind it are Mustapha and a Datuk Hassan Che Abas.

When asked about this, Mahmood said: "This is something new to me and it looks funny. We have also received a protest letter from an Indonesian non-governmental organisation on this matter."

He said an internal committee had been set up to investigate the issue.

"Overstayers can't just pay a processing fee and go home. They have to surrender to us. We will open investigation papers, refer the case to the prosecutor and take it to the Immigration court."

Mahmood said the compound was not a nominal RM300, as had been reported earlier.

"The actual compound is more. For those who overstay for more than one month, the compound is RM3,000.

"However, the offenders can appeal and if there's a valid reason, we can minimise or even waive the fine."

Najib's Message to Chinese Voters
written by Yap Ah Loy , April 01, 2009
Do you believe this man?

"KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia's incoming premier Najib Razak on Tuesday hailed the ethnic Chinese community's contribution to the nation, in a bid to mend ties with minorities who deserted the coalition in 2008 elections.

The comments from Najib, who is expected to be sworn into power later this week, came after an angry debate over the role of minorities in the multiracial country's independence struggle.

"I would like to thank the Chinese community for their many contributions to our nation's development," Najib told editors of a local Chinese paper, according to a statement from his office.

"The Malaysian Chinese community has, is now, and will forever play a vital role in the fabric of our nation," he added. "

Malaysia's burden...UMNO made!
written by Ralf Nader , March 31, 2009
If there is no formal investigation conducted by an impartial body into the murder of the young Mongolian modeal and the serious allegations of corruption against the Prime Minister of Malaysia-NAJIB TUN RAZAK, then I am afraid that everything his government and cabinet ministers do are suspect.

It is indeed shocking to see the arrogance in which UMNO has no respect for the people of Malaysia-Malay,Chinese,Indian and Eurasians who have been openly seeking through the millions of bloggers answers to these questions.

It is clear that Najib will now have to defend himself and use all the means under his power to STOP anyone from questioning on these very important issues.I see
(a) The stringent use of the ISA-although the majority of Malaysian loathe this legislation and demand for its repeal.
(b) the refusal to offer a trial for those accused-we will have Guantanamo type sentences-although malaysia is not in a war and neither is our society a backward society to stifle dissent.
(c) the deregistering and banning of opposition newspapers and parties with a stroke of a pen by the Registrar of Societies.
(d) More death using the Police to blow up people using C-4, as the Police comes under his direct control.Let alsone the anti-corruption, specail branch, judiciary, attorney general chambers and everything else that provides the public protection.

Does the malaysian community want this? Are we happy with this state of affairs.can we trust UMNO anymore for having segregated its citizens and put fear in all of them to remain in power and continue to corrupt and steal malaysain resources...We must change.this cannot do and there must be ZERO-TOLERANCE level for Deceit and Dishonesty!

How can an UMNO member look in the eye of a Malaysian citizen and say Najib was GOOD For Malaysia!

I read with much laughter Najib's affirmation of his relative: Hishamuddin Hussein Onn take on how Malaysia gained its independence. The latter suggests, which the former agreed that it was the Malays who led the fight for independence for Malaya.

Lets get the facts right-there was no fight at the end of the day.Due to the cost of the Second World War, Britain was nearly bankrupt after the lend-lease arrangement with the United States.Infact they were unable to continue the support of Greece and decided to give up all its colonies.

There was no fight for Malaya-England was broke and could not afford to carry on.Many African nations were aslo given independence at the same time-Kenya etc.The United States helped Malay under the Marshall Plan .If there was anyone who helped move independence forward it was the Malaysian Communist Party!! The malays, Chienes and Indians came later and negotiated with the British.Najib and Hishamuddin are TALKING NONSENSE!

I HOPE THAT THEY WILL STOP LYING TO THE MALAYSIAN PUBLIC!

Malays (Indonesian+Malaysians) are the 2nd most hated after the Japs in China
written by Sons of Ghengis Khan , March 31, 2009
Instead of forever begging for reasonable & fair treatment from the feudal Muslim Malay majority in Malaysia, it is time for China to consider stepping forward & to carve out independent security enclaves in Malaysia to protect its Chinese diaspora from ill-treatment by the racist Malays. The same is even more true in a more evil Indonesia. After this is being done, China should actively encourage the setting up of international tribunals to try all perpetrators of past pogroms against Chinese minorities among the political elites in both these countries. Looks like this scenario will not be too far-fetch now with China's imminent launch of its very own aircraft carrier & there are intensed clamours for such actions within its vast pool of netizens. So, it might just be irrevalent whether it is Najib or Najis or whichever dog that might appear on the SE Asian secene.

Mahathir is Back in Power with Crony Najib-Welcome another 20 years of Corruption
written by Sittiwan Jamal , March 30, 2009
Malaysians deserve what they get-they rely on the MIC, MCA and UMNO who purport to fight for the rights of the various races.Unknown to all of them is a society or gallery of crooks who have been keeing themselves in power. From time to time, this group allows new members to come in with the hope of keeping this concern alive. There are 5 families which control Malaysian PLC.

The only hope for Malaysians is to support the opposition in all the Bye-elections that are coming, force the so called reps of MIC,UMNO and MCA to resign from the government and satnda -at least as independent, until UMNO changes its corrupt ways.

When the head is corrupt-everything below is corrupt too. In a few months Malaysians will be going back to eating Tapoica,Ikan Billis and sambal-that is where the global economy is going at that is where malaysia is heading-ROCK BOTTOM!
