ImageThe Chinese and Tibetans look at March 10 with foreboding

A nervous Chinese government, still smarting from a ferocious uprising in Lhasa a year ago, is forcefully suppressing dissent in Tibet in preparation for the 50th anniversary on March 10 of the armed rebellion that sent the Dalai Lama fleeing into exile with thousands of his followers.

Despite what the Dalai Lama has warned is an "unprecedented and unimaginably forceful crackdown," exiles in Dharmasala say many monks inside Tibet, unintimidated, have held demonstrations in the monasteries, with one monk setting himself on fire while holding a picture of the Dalai Lama. Chinese officials have denied the reports and no media confirmation has come out of Tibet as Chinese authorities have restricted access to the region.

Amid the tension, China has closed Tibet to foreign tourists. With reports of increases in security forces which resulted when the Dalai Lama’s support groups called for a boycott of losar, the Tibetan New Year celebrations in late February.

Year after year, Tibetans across the globe and their support groups have commemorated March 10 as Tibetan Uprising Day. With the 50 anniversary this year, tension is said to be high in some Tibetan areas. In Dharmsala, India, the Dalai Lama’s exile home, exile elders and the young as well continue to believe they will return.th

"Fifty years are enough, it’s time for Tibet" is a common axiom among the exiles. They say it is the lama whom they regard as a living god and the five-decade non-violent struggle that has given them the energy to fight for their cause.

But the wait has made many impatient, with a few hard liners demanding rangzen or full independence, differing with the Dalai Lama who seeks an autonomous region in the country with cultural and religious identity restored.

"Tibet currently is under siege and the Chinese are destroying our nation," says an activist named Ringzin. "Since we are struggling for a nation, the movement (Rangzen) will continue."

In past years, the anniversary has been marked with protests, demonstrations and candlelight vigils seeking to tell the world of their longtime struggle against the Chinese occupation. While these actions and the indefatigable travels of the Dalai Lama have won worldwide support for the cause, the Tibetans in Dharmasala view China as having indulged in both ethnic and cultural genocide.

Lhamo Dhondup
written by Ma Pu Fang , March 13, 2009
Lhamo Dhondup most recent advocacy is for more Tibetan boys to join the monastry to increase his influence leaving many young girl not satisfied. Luckily we Hui Hui men can marry up to 4 wives and would be able to solve Lhamo's headache problem of unmarried Tibetan girls. I would encourage more Hui Hui to men to migrate to Tibet.

Qinghai

My greatest mistake is accepting 400,000 silver dollars to release the Muslim boy to become Lhamo Dhondup. Now he even claim the Muslim homeland to be part of his dream theocracy. The only long solution is to counter his splittist endeavour is convert all my subjects in Qinghai and Tibet back to Muslim brotherhood.

Hell on earth
written by Lhamo Dhondup , March 11, 2009
The Chinese government is making Hell on earth for the tibetan people. What is needed for the tibetan people to return to Heavenly Paradise is to return to Serfdom under the Higher class monks and the Aristocrats. That is what I really meant when advocating for True Autonomy for Tibet under my rule. Instead of the PLA, the Indian and West should station their armies in Lhasa to protect the safety for me and my entourage.

Timely article
written by Jacobite , March 11, 2009
After the events of last March, I have come to the conclusion that CCP rule over China must end and its own people liberated. Not by the west, but by THEMSELVES. And God forbid that this nasty Chinese nationalism you often see displayed on this board ever ever become mainstream dogma. Yet the CCP cultivates it, which is worrisome. The western world should have stood firm against the utter hypocrisy of the anti-media campaign waged against it the wake of last year's riots in Tibet. The cause was China's failed policies, not bloody CNN or the CIA. And the campaign against the western media had all the hallmarks of Cultural Revolution mass action campaigns. The west should have said 'screw the Olympics, screw the fascist torch rallies'. Why kowtow to this bunch of bullies? Why give these thugs 'face'? But we gave in and they continue to harangue its opponents. So that got us nowhere.

As for the blogger here spoiling for a fight with the Tibetans, congratulations. What a way to liberate people from serfdom!

Hu - your post I have a great deal of respect for. If only there were more people like you who realized the complexity of the situation. And by the way I am NOT advocating the independence of Tibet, just an acceptable solution. But I don't think that will ever be the case as long as the CCP is in power. And I don't think loving China is the same as loving the CCP.

Since Ma Pu Fang is the suzerain Warlord over Lhamo Dhondup, we should move more Hui population from Qinghai, XingJiang and Ningxia to Tibet. The Hui Hui are always brave patriots of the motherland and are excellent business people. They will bring more benefits for Tibet development.

Is the 15% rise in PLA spending enough?
written by Mao , March 06, 2009
With many Potential foes inside and outside the region, I wonder whether the 15% defense spending be enough to deter the potential enemies. Even dirt-poor adversaries are putting guns before stomaches and a neighbour even launched the world's biggest defense spending this year to acquire state of art aircrafts at this time of crisis.

Maotai Ain't Too Strong A Liquor
written by Sons of Ghengis Khan , March 06, 2009
Maotai can get one drunk even by seeping a small cup, especially if one is non Chinese, or batter still a Chinese hater. On the contrary, Maotai can get a real Chinese 'muscled' up, or even enhances one's sexual prowess. This is chinese magic which Chinese detractors may never understand, no matter if one is a Nobel Prize winner.

No wonder Maotai just cannot see through the magic of the Chinese xenophole's alleged bid for our treasure. Now, let's enjoy this magical scenario:

.it is a successful bid alright, but I would insist that the item be delivered to me at my home (in China) before I pay up
.meanwhile, China has already declared 'those' items stolen properties & therefore 'items-non grata' on Chinese soil~Christie would naturally non 'bona fide' to land 'those' items on Chinese soil
.Christie is one chip down, as, how can I pay if I don't get the items?
.Sue me in order to safeguard Christie's integrity & prestige? Please do, but, serve me your international court order in China (no door!) if only you can!
.alternatively, serve your order in London. Then, I would insist that 'they' have no emcumbrances before I pay. Christie is now 2 chips down
.forget about the whole episode & just imagine nothing had ever tranpired. There again, this would have entailed untold damage to the Christie name. Worst still, there will be aplenty people who would just be too happy to imitate this behaviour & that would be the beginning of endless nightmares for aution houses around the world

the theme of the game is: stolen relics are just too hot a potato to handle & they had better be returned to their rightful owner.

Cultural genocide
written by Lobsang , March 06, 2009
Dalai complained about cultural genocide in Tibet. However the real problem may lay with himself who do his utmost to encourage Young boys to join his monkhood at a tender age to increase his power. This may leave millions of women who cannot find spouses, and of course many of them marry Han Chinese when they move into the Big cities in China.

The number of monks seeking Karma is not sustainable in a poor area.

written by Slum dog Indians , March 05, 2009
Just like the new American movie says. Indians are slum dogs. They wiggle their tails and kiss up their white masters for living. They bark at people all the time. If people stand up to them, they will run away with tails between their legs.

Why don't Tibetans establish a country at Arunachal Pradesh? Arunachal Pradesh belongs to Tibetans for hundreds of years. It was taken by Indian’s previous master England. Now the master is gone. Their Indian servants came out to claim Arunachal Pradesh. That is not right. Let Tibetans to establish a country there. I do not think China will object that idea. China might even help Tibetans to have their own country. The world will be in peace. Indians are all barks no actions. They are not going to do anything useful.

Bedfella
written by TengHui , March 05, 2009
DPP and Tibetan government-in-exile are bedfella. Both groups are the corrupt bunch of ethnic dividers. Although Lee Teng Hui is the godfather of DPP and Taiwan independence, DPP Chen still accuse him of corruption and money laundering. DPP will resort to anything even disowning their parents and ancestors. It is therefore not strange that DPP will try to use March 10 to promote their independence cause.

Blind man's bluff
written by Maotai , March 05, 2009
Just a week ago a Chinese xenophobe shamed his nation before the eyes of the world by bidding, then refusing to pay for, two Chinese relics at a Christie's auction. His own government threatened the world with dire consequences if they weren't returned, conveniently forgetting its own role in the destruction of thousands of years of Chinese heritage during Mao's disastrous 'Cultural Revolution'. Records indicate that of 6843 cultural relics registered in Beijing in 1958, only 1921 survived into the 1980s.

That dark period was aimed at ridding the country of the Four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits and Old Ideas. During the destruction of the Four Olds, religion was suppressed, and churches and temples were looted and destroyed. In addition, hundreds of thousands of innocent people were tortured or killed. The suicide rate also skyrocketed as many suffering and humiliated people chose suicide over oppression. Authorities were encouraged to turn their heads as the Red Guards carried out the atrocities. That was done to the Chinese people by their own Chinese leaders.

Those very same rulers were responsible for the ghastly 'Great Leap Forward' which resulted in over 30 million Chinese dying of starvation. As an encore, they ordered the massacre at Tiananmen square of unarmed protestors, again all done by Chinese to their own stock. The facts are incontrovertible, a matter of historic record.

So given this fine track-record of unbridled violent suppression of dissent, of mindless destruction of culture and society, why would Tibetans or anyone else be filled with anything other than mortal fear and hatred at the prospect of a blood-soaked regime inviting itself in to bring emancipation to their land? If the occupiers are as benign in intent as their strident propaganda claims, why lock-down the country to stop visitors marvelling at the progress that their occupation has brought to Tibet?

No, the truth is that the Chinese Communist Party is as red in tooth and claw as their flag and all freedom withers away under its brutal shadow, as it always has. No amount of government whitewash will ever erase that fact. Tibetans are right to dread the loss of their culture, society, and nation with its stranglehold around their throat. The CCP, after all, has done it before and the white snow of Tibet will turn red - with blood.

Indian Garbage
written by Sons of Ghangis Khan , March 05, 2009
These so-called Tibetan exiles & their sponsors, the good-for-nothing Westerners & the pathetic Indians, talk like we Chinese are so afraid of shedding blood in confronting their threats of an armed insurrection. Nothing is further from the truth : in actual fact, grassroot Chinese masses, more so than our more prudent & cool-headed leadership, are longing for a real good fight with these exiled Tibetans, better still if their sponsors bring in their real men instead of hinding behind the scene & spilling nonsensical rhetorics; for, what is the point of spending billions on our armed forces modernisation if they are used merely for National Day Parade & untested on the real battle fields. We say it to our detractors in no unclear terms: bring on your "horses" & we will let you taste the legendary 'Ghangis Khan' fury! Less we need to remind ourselves, our PLA has not been in combat missions for more than 20 years already!

Muslim boy was chosen to be False Dalai Lama
written by Reting Lama , March 05, 2009
Reting Lama was a Tibetan Lama from Reting Monastery who was also one of the most important Lamas of Sera Jey Monastery. After the death of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama in 1933, Reting Lama became Regent of Tibet. A few years later a relative of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, a high government minister called Langdun, told Reting Lama and other ministers that the son of his (Langdun’s) relative was the reincarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, and gave evidence to prove this.

Reting Lama and Langdun did not have a good relationship, and Reting rejected Langdun’s claim that the son of his relative was the reincarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. However, the majority of ministers supported Langdun, and this made Reting very worried about his position, because if the son of Langdun’s relative was recognized as the reincarnation of the Thirteenth then his own power and position would quickly end.

Reting hatched a plan to choose a Muslim boy from faraway Amdo Kumbum region in Qinghai, China, The ministers of the Tibetan government were unhappy to accept a reincarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama from non-Buddhist religious culture. However, some monasteries supported Reting, and in particular the Abbot of Sera Jey Monastery forcibly threatened that if the ministers did not accept the reincarnation chosen by Reting then there would be civil war. Also Reting himself had great political power, so finally the ministers had to follow whatever he said, without choice.

The boy was given the name Lhamo Dhondup, and in order to receive permission for Lhamo Dhondup to be released from membership of the Muslim community, Reting asked the Tibetan government to pay 400,000 silver coins to the local Muslim leader of Taktser called Ma Pu-fang. Finally, in this way, the Muslim boy, Lhamo Dhondup, was brought to Lhasa, together with his search party, his family and a large group of Muslim merchants. Reting organized a great welcoming ceremony for the boy’s arrival in Lhasa.
