ImageA government decree to send the exiled Thai prime minister on his way smacks of cowardice

The sudden decision of the British government to cancel ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s visa when he was out of the country was extraordinary. It has a nasty smell about it which suggests either that the British government is hoping for some business quid pro quo or that its diplomats in Bangkok are in thrall to the monarchists, deluded democrats and assorted thugs behind the People’s Alliance for Democracy.

Britain is well known for being host to many controversial persons wanted in their home countries for alleged crimes. They currently include a large contingent of rich Russians headed by one-time oligarch and former friend of Vladimir Putin, Boris Berezovsky. In the past they have included another former Thai Prime minister, Chatichai Choonhavan after his overthrow by the palace-approved military coup of 1991.

In earlier times the British helped democratic leader Pridi Panamyong escape into exile from the clutches of military strongman Pibul Songgram who organized the 1947 coup. (In a farcical trial Pridi was subsequently convicted of plotting regicide and spent the rest of his life in exile in France).

More recent Asian refugees have included such controversial figures as Malaysian banker Lorrain Osman, kept for years at public expense on remand in London while he fought, and eventually lost, the longest extradition case in British history. Indeed there are so many political refugees in the UK that its capital has become known to some as Londonistan.

So what is it that has induced London to pull Thaksin’s visa when he was out of the country and issue statements to airlines not to allow him on flights to the UK? The withdrawal of an existing visa and the demand to airlines seems to have been deliberately designed to humiliate Thaksin.

The British so-called defenders of democracy seem to have forgotten that Thaksin was overthrown in a coup and that his supporters won a subsequent election that the Bangkok elite declines to accept because it threatens their status and power to exploit the poorer classes, notably those in the countryside whose only political weapon is the ballot box.

It is well known that when in office Thaksin abused his powers and in a more perfect world should be held accountable. However, only the blindly ignorant or the intellectually dishonest could imagine that Thaksin and his wife were prosecuted for any other than political reasons. His case is not dissimilar to that of Anwar Ibrahim, jailed by Mahathir’s stooge judges to remove him from the political arena.

The British move provide is certainly good cheer for those who want to hand power to an unelected elite headed by a king of advanced age and an otherwise dysfunctional royal family. Quite what motivated it is unclear. British diplomats in Asia have a reputation for living in a world of their own, ignoring their own country’s values as they seek to ingratiate themselves with local elites.

Noted one veteran British correspondent with many years experience in the region: “They are stand-offish towards those (including journalists) they like to think beneath them but grovel before people they believe have status. Few have any backbone”.

But the move cannot have done much to endear Britain to its large Thai community. Many of those doubtless oppose Thaksin but London’s place as a second home, a comfortable refuge, for many Thais out of favor at home, will surely be damaged by this move. It may not matter much to jobs-for-life British diplomats but it will do scant good to a London economy already reeling from the collapse of financial institutions.

In the Thaksin case it must also be asked whether the British government would have dared do this if he still owned the Manchester City football club, which he sold earlier this year to Arab interests from the Gulf. It will not be surprising if mercenary considerations are not eventually found to have driven the British decision, whether the driving force came from London or from its representatives in Bangkok. After all this is a government which abused its own powers and trashed the rule of law to shield British Aerospace from prosecution for corrupt payments on sales to Saudi Arabia.

That at any rate makes more sense than imagining that Queen Elizabeth intervened at the behest of King Bhumibol, or that British diplomats honestly believe in the independence of the Thai judiciary in cases involving prominent politicians.

Clever Brits
written by Seann Fosnaugh , November 29, 2008
The British government would have to seriously consider the Thai government's request for extradition as Thaksin would likely be found guilty by a Thai court of at least one of the many alleged crimes while he was in office (corruption, abuse of power, concealing assets & tax evasion). Rather than wait for the Thai government's extraditon request, or Thasin's possible request for asylum, Britain simply cancelled Thaksin's visa and avoided having to make the decision of extradition. I think the British government was quite clever in solving an incident before it occured.

I'm quite amused by the back and forth banter on this blog.... As someone who has lived and worked in THailand much of the last 10 years, I can say that in my unbiased observations, almost all of the political elite in the country should be in jail for corruption, so seeing them go after and attack each other like this would be funny, if it wasn't for the sad fact that the only real losers in this sad drama are the Thai people themselves, who are ignored and whose true rights of democracy are trampled by both sides of the political spectrum. I keep wondering when they (the public) will rise up and kick out of office ALL of the lifelong MP's and their backers. But then, I stop and realize... if that really did happen, there would be no one left to govern (rule?) the country! The final realization is that it is a sad reflection on the pervasive acceptance of deep-rooted corruption in the whole society. Furthermore, the sooner they give up their class oriented culture, the better off they will be. Unfortunately, as wonderful a place that Thailand could be, it will never go anywhere until there is a fundamental shift in the culture towards true egalitarianism and liberal "democracy", which can only be brought on by escaping from a mindset of personal greed and gain, and making a sincere effort to instill a respect and care for their fellow countrymen.
I hope this can happen before it is too late.

Mr Thai Tax Payer - you are showing your stupidity
written by vahncitis , November 16, 2008
Quote Thai Tax payer , November 10, 2008 says "Taksin's criminal charge with 2 year in prision was in subsequent to the case of his lawyer trying to bribe the supreme court and he was finally lost the case."

Mr Thai Tax Payer - you are showing your stupidity and your lack of correct information. The 2 year sentence is due to corruption charges related to purchase of state land by his wife. His wife was acquitted because there was no corruption. But still Thaksin was sentenced for 2 years because of conflict of interest (to allow his wife to buy land legally!).

In the opening paragraph, yet again the absurd idea that people who are anti Taksin are pro PAD. Haven't we grown out of such simplistic dogma yet?

That the British should harbor Taksin because they have previously harbored criminals is the same defeatist thinking that says Taksin should be allowed to remain PM because previous leadership where also criminals. Lets here it for progress! Up with the status quo! Down with improving the human condition!

The cowardice belongs to Thaksin Shinawatra, not to the British Government. It was Thaksin and his tax fraudster wife Potjaman who escaped Thai justice after their conviction. BTW it was the same justice and political system that Thaksin was able to manipulate and to suborn to reap his ill-gotten wealth recently frozen by the Thai government.

How can Thaksin claim Thai injustice when his political party continues to win every election with or without him, and, his brother-in-law is now currently Thai Prime Minister and all his political apprentices occupy important ministerial jobs, including Justice Minister?

It is understandable that no country wants to harbor Thailand's most notorious fugitive. Thaksin foments trouble I(at the country he bolted out from) whereby he goes and no host country would take that kind of disrespect from their guests.

New English-English Dictionary of Thailand
written by Biyha Glanglom , November 12, 2008
In the land of smiles, people see things differently.

Democracy = Dictatorship
Democratic Party = Dictatorship Party
People Alliance for Democracy = People Alliance for Dictatorship
Guilty beyond reasonable doubt = Guilty with some doubts still
Fair Trial = Trial by majority votes of the judges
Majority of the people = Minority who shout loudest
The Media = The Bias
Land of Smiles = Land of Lies

Wondering whether Oxford Dictionary are containing similar meanings for English words such as Lion = Lamb?

Love him or hate him, you have to be fair! I have to commend the writer for calling it as it is. Thai law has progressed fairly well and received fairly good ratings, though it was not the best in Southeast Asia Law until the power that be felt threatened and overreact. The watershed event was when the beginning of the previous Thai election commission who were demonized for a certain ruling in Thai election 2006, when Thaksin called for a new election. And the Democratic Party chose not to participate knowing they they would lose and more importantly due to the lack of fund. Since then, the Thai Court has selectively accelerated cases against the then Thai-Rak-Thais. The dissolution was the case in point and there were many cases afterwards. The most puzzling case seem to be the over the top ruling when Samak was found guilty over hosting four cooking shows with the honorarium of over $2000. As a whole, the Thai court has a lot to answer to the World, but since it is not accountable to the Thai public. Without get caught in future lawsuit, one can ask around who does Thai Court answer to!

At the end of the day Thaksin had alot to answer for, struggle with the palace aside and in a fair judicial system he would have been brought to heel for the deaths of 2500 people in the so called drugs wars. What happened to their due process? To compare him to Anwar Ibrahim is a bit of a travesty considering that the latter actually went to jail on trumped up charges. Only the blind would be unable to see the wrong doings that Thaksin has undertaken, whether the proscecution was politically motivated or not. I am sure that he will find somewhere nice to stay eventually!smilies/cheesy.gif

Keris dear, the only reason the author off this article goes incognition is simply becasue he fears the Thai elites will go after him for exposing the truth. The author will be pursued relentlessly. His every move will be scrutinized, his life will become living hell.

That's exactly what the Thai elites do best to silence anybody who dares speak the truth - the truth that will expose them for who they really are - human beings like you and I, yet unlike us, they will do anything and everything to REMAIN IN POWER................no matter what it will cost the nation.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING BRAVE AND BEGGING FOR A BULLET PLANTED IN YOUR HEAD.

One sided
written by Mark Lamerton , November 12, 2008
This article reads like it should have been published in the Bangkok Post.

Britain is a haven for Muslims, Eastern Europeans and Blacks, not Thais. There is a very small Thai community in the UK and they always have difficulty obtaining visas for UK entry, unlike the other three groups.

The UK has a good relationship with Thailand and was facing a long and complicated extradition process with Thaksin. It makes perfect sense to cancel his visa, thus avoiding the problem entirely. One side effect is that it makes it more difficult for the Thai government to track Thaksin's whereabouts.

Whatever Thaksin's personal problems there is no reason why Britain should support him with a free visa just because he has a lot of money. That visa could be used to support a large Muslim family with bomb-making equipment, to help them settle in the UK and enrich British culture.

As a British Thai who's been living in the UK for over twenty years, I must admit that this visa cancellation came as a surprise to me. To revoke the man's visa while he was out of the country isn't a British way of handling things. It'd have been better if the UK's Home Office and the court let Thaksin fight for his asylum.

This is truly a great article/analysis.
written by LongTimeVisitor , November 11, 2008
To response to the above post, regarding the fair trial, "fair trial" is no longer valid in Thailand. Justice/Courts systems are ROTTING and unreliable. Wrong doing people are all over the place and the law cannot do anything about it. Mainly because of the invisible hands and their power, I think everyone knows. Retard people can simply see this. For example, how the tear gas can tear people apart?? This ain't happening anywhere but Thailand. Actually, what was happening was that PAD's own immature bomb from their guard hand was accidentally falling, during their panicking, when the police start shooting the gas, is really the cause. However, most of Thai's newspapers say police kill PAD's civilians. The true news that PAD's drove a truck, then hit the police only be found in on-line newspaper. How sad is this. In fact, PAD group is doing the illegal things and lying daily via its network and no one cannot interrupt them. Most of Thai media are also on its side, since most of them do have conflict with Thaksin due to their corruption/power-abusing, when he was the prime minister. So he kicked those people out at that time. Pretty much it is revenge, I think. So the news/media in Thailand is pretty much bias, combining with the power of those backup people, this is really gone wrong.
By the way, regarding to the cases against Thaksin, it has been happening for a longtime, since before the coup but until now I still haven't seen any solid evidence that show and confirm these cases. On the other hand, the 9 leaders of the PAD have been very dirty all along. Their cases are a lot more obvious/worst but no one mention about it. By the way, there was a plan to assassinate Thaksin (by car bombing) expose way back, before the coup. The investigation was getting very closed. However, the coup just halts everything. And now this topic is fade-away.
Anyway, I am so glad to see this article. This is very true. What is going on is pretty much the bad actions of a very high (real high) power group of people who keep abusing their power, democratic careless, and do not worry anything about how the country will be ended up but instead, they are just worried about their skeleton in the closet and their well being. I am really sick of this.
Anyway, I am really thank you Asiaentinel to post this topic and its analysis. I am glad to see the media like this, sincerely.

Nothing much to say. Well written.

For those who have mentioned about tax issues, may I ask: Are you really willing and truly honest that you really want to pay taxes/duties?

Say you imported something for your own use and, by law, your are to pay import duty. Even you that item is exempted from duty would you you run to the Customs office and tell them I WANT TO PAY DUTY for the duty-exempted item you imported?

Once those of you who are way too concerned about Thaksin's not paying the tax-exempted stock trading run to the Customs Department and pay duty for your duty-exempted imports, then you may have the right to scream.

C'mon, you supposedly-well-educated people still love the duty-free shop, don't you?

Just give Thaksin back his damn money. He has earned a lot of it even before he entered Thai politics...any idiot knows that.

Why the court doesn't give back his rightful hard-earned money? Because the palace fears that Thaksin will use that money to fight back.

Thaksin won't stop fighting until he got his money back and the palace won't give him money because they fear that Thaksin will use it to fight them.. you see the dilemma?

Thaksin vs Palace = Thaksin vs Court
written by Thai bystander , November 11, 2008
Thaksin is the prime enemy of the palace. With his influence and money, they certainly don't want him to meddle around especially during the transition of throne from the King to the Crown Prince.

The court acts on behalf of the King (by law). Therefore it is doubtful to call for justice from the judiciary system which sides with plaintiff (state).

Although the government is full of Thaksin's people, the court (palace + network monarchy) still exercises their power relentlessly in order to eradicate Thaksin from Thai society.

Thai game history
written by Keerock Rook , November 10, 2008
Two years ago the Green Team grabbed the Red Team and told them they couldn't play.
The Green Team then rewrote the game rules and The Men in Black said that was fine and they could do that any time they wanted too.
But the fans of the Red Team wanted them to play again and called them back.
During the first games a group in yellow ran on the field tackling players on the Red Team, but The Men in Black said that's O.K. by the new rules.
During today’s game a portly, naked, middle aged British civil servant came on the field and said he was the new referee. It wasn’t a pretty sight.
We don’t know how many games are left in the season since the Men in Black are still trying to eliminate the Red Team and get the Pink Team to play.
Stay tuned.

It's funny to me that many Thai are angry of Thaksin because they think Thaksin didn't pay tax. Well, let me ask those tax payers who are so worried of Thaksin.

Where were you when those CNS military and elites group who opposed Thaksin were appointed as state enterprise board and spent your tax for their own interest?

I've asked this question to those who hate Thaksin and never got back any good answer. All they realize is, Thaksin is bad. When I continued asking, why's bad? They just answered, because Thaksin was PM and had to be good example for paying tax.

My next question was, didn't Thaksin pay tax and what tax?

The answer was, selling Shin Corp stock to Temasek.

I was puzzled, because in the market, they don't pay tax at all.

How funny.

Make sense!

I quite agree with the bottom line of article. There are so many relations pointing to the invisible hands behind this.

As some of us may have known, Thaksin's case is not the first and only case of someone's intervention, but we have seen this for many many times here in Thailand.

Read TKNS, you would see the answers.

Let me remind about the recent cases, the Q., after being criticized by public (of course those were charged by lese mejestic), played role of an angel such as, donating to a young student who was killed by accident as a victim of his school freshman tradition and donating various occasions.

Bet me if Thaksin's visa cancellation has nothing to do with those in palace.

I want Taksin back for fair trial.
written by Thai Tax payer , November 10, 2008
This is nothing to do with the royal monarch. Taksin's criminal charge with 2 year in prision was in subsequent to the case of his lawyer trying to bribe the supreme court and he was finally lost the case. Why don't you write about all bad things that Taksin and his administration have done in the past and on prosecution process. I am a tax payer and voted for him. After his ignorrant of the ruler code of conduct and good governance, I'm so disappointed. The current government has done nothing to get Taskin back for trial. If you believe in the fair legal justice please come back to Thailand. No place will be like home. Look at the Korean politician. They did something illegal, and was finally arrested, prosecute, served jail terms and back to the society. Khun Taksin, please has gut to face reality. We're all miss you.
