| Singapore to Become Water-Sufficient |

Page 2 of 2 Singapore's Public Utilities Board has spearheaded the campaign, investing S$4.9bn (US$3.3 billion) over the last five years alone in its four-pronged approach: increasing the area used to catch and store rainwater, recycling sewage to produce 'NEWater', building new desalination plants and working to reduce water usage. In 2005, the government opened the biggest desalination plant in Asia, delivering 110,000 cubic meters of desalinated seawater a day, enough to meet 10 percent of the country’s national water demand. The Marina Reservoir, which was first suggested by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew back in 1987, is a vital part of the plan. It will supply another 10 percent of Singapore's water needs and, together with two further reservoirs that are currently being built, it will expand the catchment area used to collect rainwater from half to two-thirds of the island’s land area. Yet despite the apparent easing of tensions between Malaysia and Singapore over recent years, Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore’s current prime minister and Lee Kuan Yew's son, hinted at the importance of continuing to reduce the country’s reliance on Malaysian imports at the opening ceremony of the reservoir last Friday. "Through the concerted efforts and ingenuity of government agencies, and the full support and cooperation of the population, we have become more self-sufficient in water, and can become completely self-sufficient should we need to," he said. "We have also turned our vulnerability into a capability." While disputes over water have done much to harm Singapore-Malaysia relations over the last 50 years, the silver lining for Singapore at least has been that the tensions have spurred the development of a world-leading water technology industry. With industrialization, urbanization and climate change all threatening to put ever greater pressure on water supplies in Asia and around the world, Singapore has positioned itself to capitalize on the demand for technological solutions to the growing water shortages. “More and more countries want to industrialize and the West is exporting pollutive industries to developing countries that don’t have the same capacity to deal with the problem,” noted Dr Kog. “Water supplies are increasingly being polluted and with global warning, it will be a big problem that may develop to an extent that it rivals the issue of oil.” Australia, where farmers have been hit by severe droughts over recent years, is already looking at Singapore’s NEWater as a possible solution to its woes. More importantly, India and China, which have been developing at a lightning pace, are facing serious water crises in the coming years. The growing water shortages are a massive threat to China, where the World Bank estimates that more than half of the 660 cities are already facing supply issues, but a big opportunity for Singapore. Companies that honed their expertise in water technology while working on Singapore’s own water problems, such as Hyflux and Keppel, have expanded into China, where the World Bank has argued that billions of dollars more must be invested to head off a major water crisis. But while Singapore has seemingly defused the potential for further disputes over water with Malaysia, it remains to be seen if relations between the two countries will continue to improve. Although the global financial storm ought to push these neighbors closer together, there is the very real danger that a deepening economic slowdown pushes both to take a more protectionist and antagonistic approach to each other. Much will depend on the extent of the economic slowdown and the eventual outcome of Malaysia’s continuing political crisis. But, for the first time in many years, some Singaporeans and Malaysians are starting to believe that their bilateral problems could be water under the bridge. Comments

And beware the next gurl you meet.. she may have worked as a pros here... but dun worry.. their places are slowly being replaced by gurls from Vietnam and China.... cos the Malaysian chicks have become too comfortable and thought they were worth a lot... so the cycle continues.. china and viet gurls come and bring these money back to their countries... then they too will become cocky... this will be floowed by the next wave from Malaysia again... except this time, the gurls might be ur daughters... Malaysia I read somewhere, will be a net oil importer come 2011, and all ur oil will run out in 2025... plus the oil subsidies and all the wastages.. when do u think ur country might go bankrupt??? My guess, in 1 generation....that's about the time you need to bring up ur daughter.. and oh.. one thing wun change.. viet, china, indo, malaysian, end user will always be us singaporeans... Let me be cocky again...Our Reserves are at an all time high of US$173 billion, not too mention the assets of temasek and all singaporean household.READ.. we will be rich for the next 2 generations at least.. and unless some crackpot government (LIKE UR UMNO) rules singapore.. we still have 50 years of good life.. can't say the same about you.. er.. what's ur career plan next year?

Well done Singapore.... The marina berrage will start to have crystal clear water in about 3 years' time. We could shove the water agreement up their arses even before the expiry dates. But since Singapore has such massive reserves (I am being bloody cocky cos it's the truth and u malaysians ain;t gonna believe we are humble anyway), we could have afforded to pay you malaysians what you asked for but... why should we.?? The conditions enshrined within the water agreement did not say we have to and, jus like giving jobs to all these Johoreans cina whose government cannot create jobs and who became ungrateful..giving away extra money and still u will come back to criticise and scold us in all sorts of manners and ways.. better still we keep the money.. better we happy than u happy. We could reinvest the extra money in new toys and gadgets for our SAF...anyway.. next time when I see a malaysian cina, will certainly degrade him in one way or another... but in such a witty way he can't be sure... most work as lowly cooks in our kopitiam or at best, in restaurants..bloody ungrateful bunch of bastards.. these 2 posts are in response to the posts here, and sadly, mostly contributed by cina whom i tot, after years of discrimination may be forced to be wiser. So just like ur UMNO counterparts.. you have also become bodoh.. victory for singapore.

wah.... a lot of bad comments here came from malaysian chinese and they always centred on singapore drinking their piss or s**t... goodness.. you guys came to singapore to find jobs and yet bear such ill-will towards us. And to think Singapore has a policy to help the malaysian chinese should there be a may riot again. It seems we have been too benevolent to the malaysian cina... all ye malaysian bumis.. well done, keep the discrimination..persecute them again soon while we can "ge an guan huo". i will tell as many of my frens in policy making agencies to such disturbing trend. But not all the malaysian cina are bodoh.. those who are are in jb, as most of these who have contributed to the posts and who are very angry, and jealous that they could not be in singapore earning more. And stop being stupid, Newater does not use anything remotely linked to human waste discharge.. oh oh.. I am talking to a bunch od morons who as usual.. shoot before deep thinking.. can't blame ya, they can't think. And what are the usual refrains I keep hearing from such moronic insecure malaysiancina, singaporeans are s**t, they live in pigeon hole, they drink piss... GAWD!! Makes me wanna laugh... surprisingly, Malaysians working here on the surface appear meek and weak, males behave like pussies while females are mostly whores... well, nuff said.. we all, know deep in our heart who has the upper hands. Singapore bashing, other than being able to elevate ur pride for a second can't change much facts..you still have to crawl back to ur racist country while we build a comfy nest egg.. one more thing.. jus came back from a month long trip to china, met some malaysian chinese there.. coulkd tell by their accent.. when the chnese asked them where they were from, they said Singapore.. now.. I wonder why. No wonder the bumis wanna kick ur ass cos you are weak and have no pride..

I love S'pore & am forever grateful to it for giving the opportunities to so many of us who were denied so many things on the Peninsular all because of the colours of our skin. Even though we quite dislike the overly Westernised orientations of S'porean society, you bet we won't leave this safe heaven no matter what come may. For, this is the convenient safety valve for so many ex M'sians who can't tolerate Malay rule but yet remain close by to our left-behind loved ones in the Peninsular.

Just never believe anything about racial integration/harmony between Malay & Chinese~the differences cannot be wider even compared to Chinese/Caucasians. The sadder thing is that the gap grows wider day by day instead of the other way round. So, this so-called water, land, race problems etc..one day we shall just stroll over to take whatever we want from the other side for free! If they dare call us a little red dot, so be it but just let them be reminded that it is a tiny red dot albeit behind a huge red blot (Mainland China) if they ever contemplate swallowing us up. Who knows, S'pore may one day become a loose federated state of Greater China! report abuse

Toilet Humour
written by SG-rean , November 09, 2008
You childish malaysians. when we were buying raw water from johor, u complain that we pay too little. when we re-sell the treated water back at a subsidised rate, nobody says anything.
Votes: +17
we know it places both countries in difficult positions and its impossible to move forward on issues unless this was taken out, so we went for a technological solution and we decide to not buy so much water from malaysia. Now, we have crude toilet humour from childish malaysians. do you only feel good when you are bashing singapore? If you think that its so easy to just place all your polluting industries along your rivers and sell us the polluted water and sewage, then good luck. At the end of the day, u will end up still having to buy Newater from Singapore cos the difference will be that you have ruined all your river water supplies and we are the only ones nearby who have the capabilities to make it potable for u. You'll be drinking your own dung and pee. We used to have pig farms too... the pollution ruined the Singapore river and the clean-up took 10 long years. How long would it take to clean up the rivers in johor? report abuse

the problem with malaysia is an inferior complex. they view everything with blinkered eyes - envy, failure of Sg is their success (not working towards their own success). Water in Malaysia is like govt funds - it leaks everywhere and u whitewash it with a nice name - non-revenue water like money politics, etc.

Water Is Never The Real Issue
written by Hate-UMNO , November 08, 2008
Once this so-called "water" issue is resolved, there will be a continuous string of other issues cropping up in time to come. S'poreans, who among them consisting of a large proportion of ex M'sians who have had teeth to grind against their former homeland, are well aware of the built-in, unresolvable "structural" contradictions with its immediate neighbour. Many ex M'sians who now hold senior positions in the S'porean army would just love to drive our tanks or fly our F 16s into M'sia to render a bloody nose to those UMNO assholes/Malay racists on behalf of our left-behind relatives, friends & loved-ones still suffering on the Peninsular if only the S'pore Govt is brave enough to give us the green light.

What to do le? We got a dumb ass UMNO govt selling good water to Singapore for peanuts. If Malaysia has a Chinese PM, we would have sold only toilet water to Singapore (for Singapore to recycle to "new water") at a much higher price, take it or leave it. Not only that, if Singapore wants non-toilet water, we would have sold Singapore any amount of water they want, as long as they come in bottles, as "mineral water", and of course at French prices since we will label it something like Evian mineral water with a sprinkling of minerals to cater to the kiasu rich Singaporeans. And everybody on both sides of the border would be happy.

We got a stupid UMNO govt selling cheap and good water to Singapore for a song. Any clever government would have squeezed Singapore to pay through the nose for water at a much higher price. And since Singapore is doing such a good job in recycling dirty toilet water into clean water, the Malaysian government, if only run by cleverer people, would have located the dirty industries like chicken and pig farms next to the river for the water supply to Singapore, and give the water for free to Singapore to let Singapore clean and recycle the water, and that would be win-win for both countries.

When Malaysia booted out Singapore, the latter had 3 vulnerabilities hanging over over its head- defence, economy and water. Over the long period of Mahathir rule, Singapore overcame all these. When Mahathir took over it was S$0.95 to MR1. When he resigned the MR was worth S$0.45. Mahathir was credited with rescuing Malaysia from the Asiuan Financial crisis. The more important was the fact that Malaysia fell into a crisis from which it had to be rescued while Singapore was largely unscathed. In water, Singapore came up with Newater and informed Malaysia that it would not need to renew its water agreements beyond a certain date. In defence, Singapore's citizen army and its defence technolgy surged past Malaysia's which was still buying equipment based on "commission" and "free" tourist moon trips (that's certainly a case for sedition and ISA lock-up, comprimising national defence ). Thus Mahathir has a 'special' feeling for LKY.
