Once the troublesome Olympic Games are out of the way, steel will rain on China’s rebellious regions

china-tankChinese Communist Party and military authorities are set to launch an all-out, life-and-death struggle against underground, “splittist” elements in Xinjiang, whose three attacks against security personnel this month resulted in the death of 20 police and officers of the People’s Armed Police.

Diplomatic sources in the Chinese capital said the enhanced military action would begin immediately after the Olympics end on the 24th, when the world’s attention will no longer be focused on China’s human rights record, including its shabby treatment of the Uighur minorities in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

The political fortunes of President Hu Jintao’s faction are at stake. Since disturbances began to intensify in Tibet and Xinjiang early this year, Hu cronies running western China, including the Xinjiang Autonomous Region Party Secretary Wang Liqun and Tibet Party Secretary Zhang Qingli, have come in for criticism by other CCP factions for failing to do a good job in maintaining stability in the two flashpoint regions.

In the Chinese tradition, cadres under fire for failing to maintain law and order will normally opt for hawkish and draconian measures so as to demonstrate their toughness as well as “political resoluteness.” Given that Wang’s and Zhang’s jobs are on the line, they would seem to have ample reason to use whatever firepower they could muster to obliterate bitter foes among the ethnic minorities.

The call to arms was issued August 13 by Politburo member and Xinjiang region secretary Wang, Hu’s protégé. In language that recalls the excesses of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), Wang said in a meeting with local cadres and military officials that the CCP’s war against the “three evil forces” – or groups advocating terrorism, separatism and religious extremism – would be “a struggle unto death… that will remain long-term, severe and convoluted.”

Wang also hinted that there was no room for compromise or for a non-military settlement of the differences between Beijing and these “enemy forces.” The Politburo stalwart told his comrades that military and police forces must “seize the initiative in attacking, hit them [the enemies] wherever they show up, and undertake pre-emptive strikes” so as to deny the three evil forces opportunities to re-group.

Recent party documents on the “next stage of struggle” against the “three evil forces” have underscored the significance of a kind of responsibility system for PLA, PAP and ordinary police officers. This means that military and police officers must ensure that areas under their jurisdiction be free of underground separatist or extremist bases. And if trouble or quasi-terrorist activities occur in a certain city, town or county, responsible cadres or officers are to be fired or demoted immediately.

As Wang said Wednesday: “Every official must man his command post well. Officials must have a high sense of responsibility toward safeguarding areas [under their jurisdiction].”

Beijing sources knowledgeable about Beijing’s policies toward ethnic minorities – especially Uighurs – say that President Hu has totally abandoned the policy of flexibility and appeasement advocated by his patron, former party chief Hu Yaobang, in the 1980s.

The sources have pinpointed two new thrusts in Beijing’s long-standing efforts to tame Xinjiang.

Firstly, more troops – and hardware such as jet fighters – are to be moved to the Lanzhou Military Region (MR), which is responsible for western provinces including Gansu, Ningxia and Xinjiang. Reinforcements have come, for example, from divisions that were originally responsible for guarding the border with Russia and for a possible military confrontation with Taiwan.

With relations across the Strait having been stabilized in the wake of the triumph of the Kuomintang at presidential polls last March, several units from the Nanjing Military Region (which is responsible for Taiwan) have been deployed in the Lanzhou MR for the time being.

Secondly, Xinjiang public security departments will revive the surveillance and “spying” functions of neighborhood committees in various cities in the autonomous regions. XAR authorities have allocated additional funds to hire “part-time informants” that are attached to neighborhood committees. These informants, who include both Han Chinese and Uighurs, are tasked with telling police about suspicious-looking people who have newly moved into the neighborhood.

At least as of now, President Hu is confident that iron-clad tactics against Uighur “rebels” would not lead to serious international repercussions. The US has in the past few years toned down criticism of Beijing’s XAR policy partly in return for China’s help in Washington’s global anti-terrorism gambit. And President George W Bush’s appearance at the opening ceremony of the Games has convinced Beijing that whatever it does in Xinjiang or Tibet will not lead to a deterioration of Sino-U.S. ties.

Moreover, even if the PLA and PAP were to play hardball with “underground gangs” in the XAR, such actions would pale beside the recent incursion of Russian groups into Georgia. The Western world’s lukewarm response to the Georgian crisis reinforces the CCP leadership’s belief that it can get away with even the most repressive policies in Tibet and Xinjiang.

total protest against the chinese action in xiziang
written by topga , July 15, 2009
the uighur people are terrorised from two combined and totally united forces, the han migrants and the chinese military who view any dissenting actions by e thnic minorities anywhere within china as illegal thus deserving the harshest reprisals from the central authority. the world is witnessing one of the most unthinkable and inhuman state terrorism unleashed by one of the five permanent security council members. the killings must stop immediately and uighurs , mongolians and the tibetans must be the masters of their own destiny. military and economic power alone are not the legal basis for colonising people who do not want to be subjugated and colonised.

To Kevin -

Strange name for a Muslim, isn't it?

Anyway, let's put things in perspective and there's no secret about it. The truth will always prevail and in fact people have eyes to see for themselves.

As I'm writing I'm reminded that further bomb blasts have just taken place in Southern Thailand and the Southern Philippines all in the name of a Muslim homeland in these secular countries.

Whether it's Chechnya, Petani, Mindanao or Xinjiang, etc., it makes no different. So let's not pretend. We can treat the Muslims with all loving, tender care but ultimately the jihadists and Islamists will still want to lead the rest to violence for a Muslim homeland.

The truth and fact is Islam dictates the world to be divided into two houses: the House of Islam (Daral-Islam), in which Muslims rule and Sharia law prevails, and the house of War (Daral-Harb). WAR! And those who fight in the war (jihad) qualify for rewards in both worlds - booty in this one and paradise in the next.

So, please don't take people to be stooges. They are neither stupid nor ignorant as you envisage. They too read the Koran.

it is amazing people here think Uyghurs are hell bent on Jihad and islamofacism. They're not. They just don't like oppressive Chinese rule, much like the tibetans. I've been to Xinjiang, and if Chinese treated my people like they treat the uyghurs, you're damn right i'd be sticking it to them.

It is the right of China to defend its security, territorial integrity and innocent people's lives against terrorism. So why making it so big deal?

And, unlike the US that often invades other nations, China is doing so inside its own territory.

Maybe just because China is Asian.

Common Enemy
written by Nana , August 22, 2008
This is strange. The overseas offices of the terror organisations of the Uighurs (China) and Chechnyans (Russia) are found in the US and UK respectively. Surprisingly, the West doesn't play host to the Moro Separatists (Phillippines), Petani Separatists (Thailand) or the Khasmiri Separatists (India).

Interesting. How is the West then going to expect reciprocal co-operation from the Russians or the Chinese in the fight, now or in future, against the Islamic terrorists bent on destroying them?

Terrorists

Asians should leave the Muslims alone, i.e. jihadists and Islamists. They are not our enemies.

They perceive the Crusades (West) & Jews as their inveterate ememies, not Asians.

Muslims submit to their holy Book, the Koran. It clearly calls on all believers to attack the Christians & Jews.

So, time and again, we will witness, given the opportunities, the continual bombings in the West.

There is little actually the West can do cos their numbers migrated there are sizeable. And they simply can't tell the so-called moderates from the jihadists or Islamists by occupation or appearance.

"anti-muslim lunatics"?

I'm quite sure the free world will tell you it's the anti-infidel lunatics (so-called jihadists and islamists) everywhere in the secular world who're seeking armed rebellion to overthrow legitimate governments for separation & independence eg from thailand (petani), russia (chechnya), india (kashmir), china (xinjiang) phillipines (mindanao), etc.

i believe if u even dare utter "self-rule" in any Islamic country the jihadists there will cut u up to pieces. even the muslims in so-called secular turkey treat the independent seeking muslim kurds mercilessly.

how can u be a moderate hongkonger when u pretend the existence of anti-kafir. are u an undercover islamist yourself? we hongkongers are not blind people.

Wow, the anti-muslim lunatics are out in force here.

Of course nobody has addressed the question of why the Uighurs shouldn't be entitled to rule themselves.

But finding common sense and tolerance among right-wing loons and Chinese nationalists is as likely as seeing a peaceful protest approved in the Beijing Olympic parks.

Look Through The Smokescreen
written by Proud Chinese , August 19, 2008
Muslims are never our natural & eternal enemies. In fact, they should become our strategic/convenient friends, in their life-&-death struggle against our more potent enemy, the West/US. Chinese/Muslim contradictions are merely skin-deep in sofar as their foolish ideas of establishment of a independent Muslim Xinjiang & there does not exist a civilisational clash/historical settling of old scores as that between the Islamic world & the West/US. Separatist Uighuirs/Turks may be our enemies but Arabs, Iranians & African Muslims are definitely not. In fact, Jihadist Islamists did China a tremendous favour by draining away the West's resources & focus since 2001 thus allowing us the precious 6 to 7 years of uninterrupted peace in order for us to catch up with the West. One would just not envisage what would have actually befallen us if the CIA/Pentagon were allowed a free reign during those fateful years~we would have gone the tragic Soviet way & once again assume the position of the sick man of Asia. So, Chinese beware & remain crystal clear of our destiny & geostrategic position!

The Sword
written by Dennis S , August 18, 2008
Yes. China smash them. The Islamists and jihadists. It's pointless appeasing these savage bombers. Remember, the payback for the Brits harbouring the Chenchens was laughable worldwide. They returned by bombing their subways and buses. Mind you these savages were home-grown Brits. Come London 2012 it may be a Big Bang (Ben) if they are not already scheming and planning for it now. Secular countries must not be used by them to further their cause but learn to co-operate, instead of playing this religious card against each orther to their eventual own detriment. It's a deadly boomerang.

Like it or not the eternal ememies of Islam are the Jews and Christians by Koranic edict. sooner or later, they will come back and haunt you. The US is worst (being Israel's staunch ally). Look. After the Americans helped them kick the Russians out of Afganistan they are not gunning the Americans themselves! What a big joke. Maybe the Americans deserve it for failing to read the Koran.

I cried when I saw what barbarism they did to the Russian little kids recently. Even children are not spared when they start to blanket the earth green.

I'm well aware of china's crappy human rights record. But my wife and have been to china, and we have been to middle eastern countries. Believe me, the best of the middle east makes the chinese look like angles. The repression imposed on citizens, especially women, of religous rule is absolutely insane in all middle eastern countries. The fact that these religous rules and laws are based on the teaching of a murdering, thieving, bloodthirsty, child molesting madman is no surprise. The whole time we were in any middle eastern country was like .....fear......24/7......china on the other hand....you are free to mix as you like, dress as you like....party....drink.....have sex....you can be gay.....nobody is going to abuse you or challenge you unless you make trouble for the government or try to abuse others....something muslims always do.

Yes....go for it china.....show the rest of the appeasing world how to deal with muslims.....be as brutal as they are themselves.......crush them.....kill them......and smash their will to raise a defiant finger. And keep it up until those of them with any brains at all realise that they best abandon their stupid beliefs.....those that don't.....well...introduce them to their 72 virgins....the sooner the better.

Lebanon! Oh Lebanon!
written by Solomann , August 16, 2008
Oh Lebanon I cry for you. When you were the majority in the fifties you treated them fairly and well. Alas, then the Muslims multiply fast and overtake you; trouble begins to loom.

Whether at the local, municipal or state level, once Muslims reach a substantial number, Islam dictates that they MUST rule and impose their values on the infidels i.e. the non-Muslims. Good luck Lebanon. Your days are numbered. Peace-loving Christian Lebanese are migrating to the States in droves surrendering their beautiful cedar land to the apostles of peace.

When appeasement and humanity have lost its meaning, when the people have turned wild and fiendish by taking innocent lives in their hands, when they have gone into evil doctrine of believes in the extreme of behaviors and control, the only way China can do is forced to adopt the iron fists measures, to save the majority's well beings and the National security! No other Country should interfere and meddle with their internal affairs when their Government is serving the proper rule of law against the notorious outlaws who detonated the first killer bomb on the innocent citizenry of the Country............... Words are numb to skull, military action is the only solution!

Support PRC against Muslim terrorists
written by Huizarde , August 16, 2008
Let China show the rest of the world how to put down Muslim terrorists. Maybe if China does a thorough job, as one would expect them to, then weak-kneed governments in Russia, Thailand, Philippines, France and UK will finally deal with Muslims they way they deserve: assimilation by force or expulsion.

Uyghurs used live under the rule of East Turkestan Republic, a short lived republic that based on democracy and freedom of religion and speech, but not based on Islam. It is true that Uyghurs are Muslim and we are proud of that. Uyghurs lived much better than now before the occupation of Chinese communist.

Chinese are exercising Nazi rule in East Turkistan, not openly like Nazis, but using different way. Real killer are the Chinese communist and America really needs to open her eyes and understand real China.....

China\'s Nazi Rule in East Turkestan
written by Yolvas , August 15, 2008
The recent bombings by Uyghurs against China's military and police targets are the direct results of CCP's heavy-handed rule over the past six decades. Such attacks will continue as long as China does not stop repressing Uyghurs and respect their basic human rights. As Mao Zedong, communist China founder stated, "Where there is repression, there is resistance." This is not about religion. This is about freedom. This is about every oppressed people's desire to live free. The communist Chinese rule in East Turkestan is not any different than Nazi rule in Europe. If this is not an information age, CCP would have committed open genocide against the Uyghur and Tibetan people long time ago. To pretend to be a most "civilized" nation in the world with putative "5000" years history, China is committing cultural genocide against both Uyghurs and Tibetans by destroying their culture, religion, values, traditions, language and their very humanity. In short, CCP and the Chinese rule in East Turkestan is inherently evil. It is not any different than Hitler's Germany.

Where Kindness is Weakness
written by James V , August 15, 2008
I really find it difficult to understand the psyche of Moslems worldwide.

In predominantly Islamic countries, non-Moslem citizens are expected to kowtow to them, shut up or get out. Many have chosen the latter. As a result, non-Moslems have been reduced to nought or insignificance gradually in such countries. Even in the so-called moderate Moslem majority countries like Malaysia, non-Moslems I am informed, must pay taxes to service the Moslems for their subsidized housing, education, public sector employment, etc. A subtle form of dhimmitude.

However, in non-Moslem countries, Moslems loudly demand all sorts of rights. Notwithstanding the generosity of the host countries, jihadists return the goodwill & space with periodic bombings eg UK, Spain, France.

The Quran has decreed that Moslems kill Jews and Christians as an easy passport to paradise. I doubt the killings will ever stop around the world. The question is about opportunity rather than anything else.

I'm really sorry for non-Islamic countries like Thailand (S Thailand), the Philippines (Mindanao), China (Xinjiang), India (100 million), Russia (Chechnya), UK, France, etc., with sizeable Moslem populations. There, the jihadists lurk, having blended nicely into the community and are only waiting and buying time to be martyred.

Where & when will another 9/11 occur?

It's high time the crackdown begin! Using religion to the hilt, to fight for so called "freedom" should be suppressed and there should be no quarters given. Bombing innocent people indiscriminately, and without any warning, in the name of freedom cannot be accepted, and anyone who justifies that through religion should be eliminated.
