Magazine
says no defamation of Lee Hsien Loong and his father took place in
August 2006 article
In two 50-page defense statements, The Far Eastern Economic Review has replied to allegations it had defamed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his father, former Premier Lee Kuan Yew, in an interview the magazine carried last August with Singapore opposition politician Chee Soon Juan. The defense statements are here.
The statements, filed late on Friday, argue that no defamation exists because the article and the interview were factual. It also argues that the article was written in the public interest and that as a political figure Chee was qualified to comment on public affairs in the island republic.
Singapore’s leaders, who have filed numerous libel suits against foreign media group and opposition politicians, have yet to lose a case in Singapore’s courts. Among those they have sued or taken other action against are the Economist, the International Herald Tribune, Bloomberg, the Asian Wall Street Journal and FEER.

It appears FEER is ready to be sued by them yet again. Their latest headlining article completely slams the PAP and the father-son pair.

I cannot seem to access the page now for some strange reason. I can't decide if PAP has blocked the site while it calls up FEER or if too many Singaporeans are trying to access the site. Right now, however, report abuse

Every government in her country has its own interpretation of laws governing media activities. Those laws defined by government do not subscribe totally to the idea of freedom expression. The government disallows foreign media companies to meddle with the internal affairs of Singapore.

It's about time to have informal meetings with other foreign-owned media corporations about the feasibility of long-term investment in Singapore. FEER and foreign-owned media corporations should rethink whether their objectives or policies will benefit from the current situation in Singapore given the defamation suit. I have the opinion of that the relocation to elsewhere is necessary to suit your business approach. report abuse

It seems counsel is using "Scanners" tactics? If the plaintiffs' heads explode on reading the defense statements, the cases would be automatically dismissed on the grounds you cannot libel the dead?
