Tin Shui Wai has been dubbed the 'city of sadness' for its
high rate of unemployment, suicides, and spousal and child abuse. Over
the last eight years, about 20 people have died in 6 suicides,
including a mother and her two children in November.
Due to poor city planning, Tin Shui Wai was originally planned as bedroom community for Hong Kong workers but plans for labour intensive industries nearby never materialized due to the rise of nearby industrial cities in Guangdong province, such as Shenzhen, Dongguan and Foshan. This left Tin Shui Wai with few employment opportunities in the isolated area and high transportation costs to other parts of Hong Kong makes it difficult for people to look for jobs outside the town. This would explain why upwards of 80% of the 270,000 residents are on social welfare. While the housing projects themselves are orderly and clean, the lack of employment, meaningful social interaction with other towns and government inaction (ignorance?) has led to the isolation of this district from Hong Kong's other suburbs. More job opportunities, transportation subsidies and social workers are urgently needed to change the dire situation. Whoa! I was shocked with the treatment of Pakistani boy. Why they are doing that? we should not discriminate their ethnicity. We live in the same world, same air we breath, same food we eat, same dresses we don. Let's keep in mind discrimination must not be acted though he is not belong to the group.

With the advent of West Rail and its closeness to Tin Shui Wai, this has opened up a lot more opportunities for the residents. Travelling times have been greatly reduced while providing residents with a much greater area for employment. A new bridge, very close to Tin Shui Wai, extending to Shenzhen has been opened, also providing greater employment. This all serves to raise moral in these outer areas and people who have found it hard, now have a chance to climb the ladder ! report abuse

This sort of economic situation seems to taking place in more and more places across the world. You would think that all of the technologies we have and all of the well paid politicians everywhere would be able to find solutions besides welfare for these people in this city and so many others.

I had never heard of Tin Shui Wai before, and it saddens me to hear of yet another place in the world where people are living in decrepit conditions. It makes me even more grateful to live in a nation that has more privileges, but I feel helpless because I can't do anything to help them. Maybe corporations can focus on building factories (that aren't sweatshops, give them good pay, and won't overwork their employees to death) to help the unemployment problem.

Alas, another group of people bite the dust. It seems the world is full of people everywhere in dire straits. Maybe the least we can do is to start a petition or a fund or something to redress the sad situation instead of sighing and falling back into our armchair in abject inertia. Perhaps Derrick could compile a book for his photos and sell them to raise money, perhaps we can start a website for them, etcetera...but thanks for letting us know and I will make a point to visit this place and find out more what can be done to help in some small way...
